Chapter 154: A Display of Divinity

"Look... the xenos is speaking!! And it's speaking our language!"

Everyone present was stunned that Zagara could speak. It confirmed that these xenos indeed belonged to the Rogue Trader before them.

The first thing the priests under Holter's command did upon arriving was to proclaim Lucan's status as a Living Saint.

As the gazes of the numerous civilians fell upon him, Lucan began to draw upon the residual power of the Emperor stored within his Sarr-Naga projection. Previously, the unconsciously absorbed psychic energy from the Emperor had only allowed him to cover himself in a layer of golden holy light. But now, the amount stored within his projection was enough for him to perform effects similar to a divine miracle.

Translucent, golden wings unfurled from Lucan's back. The holy light seemed to dispel the darkness of the underhive, bathing everyone around in its glow. Lucan himself began to slowly float into the air.

"It's real... He really is a Living Saint of the Emperor... By the Emperor, I have witnessed a Living Saint with my own eyes."

Whispers slowly turned into shouts of excitement. The wings on his back were remarkably similar to those of the Emperor's own son. A being with wings wasn't necessarily a xenos; it could also be the great Sanguinius. Lucan had not manifested these golden wings at random. By using a concept that already existed in people's minds, it was easier for them to accept.

Everyone who witnessed this miracle knelt before Lucan. The color of the Emperor's power was too easy to recognize. In their eyes, Lucan had become the Emperor's representative in the mortal world.

And in the eyes of the people, the Zerg also took on a new identity. They were no longer terrifying xenos with whom coexistence was impossible, but a weapon of the Emperor, sent to save the world.

Looking at the scene before him, Lucan knew that the issue of the Zerg's identity, at least on Malfi, was temporarily resolved. However, the Zerg's main base of operations would still have to be near Char. The Zerg's way of life was fundamentally incompatible with humanity; on any planet where the Zerg existed, almost all resources would be completely plundered by them. Therefore, within the borders of the Imperium, the Zerg could only be used as a disposable weapon for the time being.

The miracle Lucan performed would also make the Dynasty's rule here much smoother. The events they had just witnessed would soon be spread throughout Malfi by word of mouth. Although Glydus had fallen to Chaos, her twisted loyalty to the Emperor had instilled a firm faith in Him among many of the people of Malfi.

"Ian! Where is Glydus being held now?"

"For now, we have borrowed the secret prison of the Reunificationist Sect. Their psychic shielding measures are very comprehensive, which prevents her from using her psychic powers and also protects her from the gaze of the warp."

"Take me to see her!"

The secret prison was located within the Reunificationist Sect's hidden base. And here, Lucan also saw the biological cloning technology he had been yearning for.

As they went deeper, Lucan arrived at the secret prison. In cell after cell, built from incredibly strong alloys and various anti-psyker materials, prisoners were being held. Inside the cells, flamers, bolters, plasma guns, and countless other weapons were aimed at the captives. Any unusual movement or sign of resistance would result in their immediate purification.

From time to time, screams echoed through the halls, indicating that the Inquisitors were using their interrogation techniques on the prisoners.

As Lucan passed one interrogation room, he saw two Inquisitors specializing in torture questioning the Tzeentchian sorcerer, Frank. They were trying to extract more information about the warp from him, or about hidden traitors on Malfi. For the Inquisition, a Chaos sorcerer who had been lurking beside the governor and had thrown Malfi into such a state was a rare and valuable captive.

Watching the Inquisitors' methods made Lucan's scalp tingle. It was brutal, far too brutal. Even these worshippers of Chaos found it difficult to withstand the Inquisition's techniques. Lucan even saw a daemonhost, which the Inquisition had intentionally allowed to possess a mortal body for the sole purpose of interrogating it to obtain desired information.

More cells held the nobles from Glydus's bloodline. Each of these individuals could be said to be a stain on the record of the Reunificationist Sect.

When Lucan arrived before the cell holding Glydus, Leon was already waiting at the door.

"You must be Lord Lucan?"

"A pleasure to meet you, Inquisitor Hawkins. However, taking my prisoner of war without my permission... isn't that a bit inappropriate?"

Leon felt a sense of pressure from Lucan... not just in terms of status and strength, but a faint aura of divinity... it stirred an impulse within him to submit.

His acolytes had been observing Lucan constantly. When he had first seen the Zerg, he had merely thought this Rogue Trader was using his authority to consort with xenos, perhaps even using heretical biotechnology like himself. But when his acolyte showed him the footage of the miracle Lucan had just performed, every last detail of it, he had no choice but to believe that Lucan truly was a Living Saint chosen by the Emperor. The Emperor's blessings appeared from time to time on the most dangerous battlefields of the Imperium, but a blessing this generous was something Leon had never found even in the most secret archives of the Inquisition.

"Lord Lucan, these people are still dangerous. The facilities of the Inquisition can ensure they are unable to harm the Imperium. If you wish, you may interrogate them at any time."

Leon unconsciously lowered his posture.

"Then let me see this Glydus. And Lord Hawkins, how have you considered the deal for the cloning technology that Ian mentioned to you earlier?"

"This..."

"Lord Hawkins, my Dynasty and I share many similarities in philosophy with your Reunificationist Sect. We are both striving for change, just in different ways. In the Imperium's current state, achieving victory, let alone reviving the Emperor, is difficult, if not impossible... We can only seek a new path. And now, I have found a path that has a real chance of success.

"The cloning technology in your hands can accelerate this process. The Dynasty can also provide you with a large amount of resources and even combat personnel. Right now, you may only see me standing before you, but behind me is the entire Koronus Expanse. There, new worlds are constantly being discovered, new technologies are being explored. Then, with Leon leading the way, Lucan finally met Glydus.

The door to the deepest cell was opened. The dying Glydus lifted her head.

"So, you are Lucan?"

Even now, Glydus was still smiling. She had never felt she had done anything wrong. Under the inhuman torture of the Inquisition, she had somehow withstood their interrogation techniques. It had to be said that her will was truly tough; otherwise, she would not have been able to resist the lure of the warp for so long.

Leon was also having a headache. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't break Glydus's silence.

"Leon, since you cannot get what you want, let me execute her. Her crimes are beyond forgiveness and redemption."

Lucan's true purpose was to devour her soul to learn more information.

Although Leon didn't understand why Lucan insisted on doing it himself, having just reached an agreement, he didn't mind doing him this favor. At least, with his current methods, he could no longer get any more information from Glydus. And the death of Glydus also meant that the most severe stain on the Reunificationist Sect's record on Malfi would be erased.
