Chapter 167: Chapter 168: Blessing the Librarian
Chapter 168: Blessing the Librarian
Returning to his warship, Gabriel ordered the "Omnis Arcanum" to be opened. The Chapter's Chief Librarian accompanied him.
The Omnis Arcanum was located in the deepest part of the Battle Barge, guarded by the Chapter's most elite battle-brothers. The Librarians took turns guarding this special prison, built for those in the Chapter who had lost control of their psychic powers. Here, the fallen were stripped of their power armor, with only simple monk's robes covering their bodies.
Gabriel walked with a heavy heart through the corridors of the Tower. The occasional whispers and mad laughter of the uncontrolled psykers stabbed at his nerves. The ones making these sounds had once been his closest comrades. These Librarians, selected from a large number of psychically gifted recruits and having undergone extensive psychic training, had ended up like this. It was even worse for the new recruits.
This Tower currently held only three "prisoners."
As Gabriel passed each cell, the person inside would regain a moment of clarity and call him Chapter Master. Gabriel could see their pain, but they still remembered their mission and their faith in the Emperor, which kept them from completely losing control. But some things could not be solved by willpower alone. These men had once been dedicated Librarians of the Chapter, and now they were willingly imprisoned here, like test subjects for the Chapter's research. Everyone knew that only by finding a solution before they completely lost control could the Chapter escape this curse.
Gabriel stopped in front of one cell. The "prisoner" inside was the one least affected among the current inmates. He was sitting cross-legged on the floor, praying, trying to use this method to resist the influence of the warp. But the whispers that battered his soul every moment were destroying his will.
Seeing Gabriel standing outside the door, Osiris forced his eyes open. Gabriel could see his exhaustion. The fatigue of the mind and will was more torturous than any physical exhaustion.
"Osiris, my brother, are you well?"
"I... I don't know how much longer I can hold on. I find that I am increasingly unable to control my psychic powers. Gabriel, Chapter Master of my Chapter, I beg you, I beg you to let me die an honorable death before I lose control. I cannot fall completely. I do not want to become a stain on the Chapter. This way, even if I die, my soul can return to the Golden Throne."
"Osiris, it is not yet time to give up. The Chapter now has an opportunity, a chance to possibly escape the loss of psychic control!"
Hearing this, Osiris's eyes widened. He even thought he had misheard.
"Is it true?! Has the Chapter found a way?! That's wonderful, Gabriel! You will become the greatest Chapter Master in the history of the Chapter!!"
"No, the method does not come from us, but from a Rogue Trader Dynasty. We now need a candidate to go to this Rogue Trader and receive some kind of technology we do not know. I don't even know if this technology is in the field of biological genetics or from some forbidden knowledge. But given his status as a Living Saint, it shouldn't be the latter. Osiris, this is of immense significance to the Chapter. Are you willing to undertake this trial for the Chapter? If any accident befalls you, the Chapter will avenge you."
"I am willing. Rather than waiting here for death, I am willing to sacrifice for the Chapter! All glory to the Blood Ravens, Chapter Master Gabriel!"
"Jonah, open the cell. Take Osiris to the Rogue Trader's warship."
One by one, the security measures were disengaged, and the anti-psychic wards were deactivated. Osiris once again donned his suit of power armor. The meticulously maintained and decorated armor also had a special set of psychic inhibitors, helping the Librarian to better control his powers while also preventing a sudden loss of control.
Wearing his power armor, Osiris's spirits clearly improved.
"Let's go, Chapter Master. Everything for the Blood Ravens."
Gabriel watched as Osiris, under the guard of a group of tech-priests and Raiders, was taken to an unknown part of the warship.
"Chapter Master, there is no need to worry," a tech-priest explained patiently to Gabriel. "There are also people within our Dynasty who have received the great lord's blessing. It is a great grace, a treatment that only the most outstanding individuals in the Dynasty can enjoy. You may not know how much effort countless citizens of the Dynasty have put in to strive for this opportunity, but out of tens of billions of people, only a few can enjoy it each year."
Even he was incredibly envious. Within the Cult of the Holy Machine, only those priests who were recognized by both Magos Pavian and Lord Lucan, who possessed sufficient knowledge and had made significant contributions, could receive the blessing. Those who were blessed received a great boost in both their learning ability and their physical bodies. Compared to those who had not been enhanced by the Divinity Machine, their learning efficiency and scientific research results were plain for all to see.
Gabriel said nothing more. All he wanted were results.
"My Lord! The candidate provided by the Blood Ravens Chapter has arrived!"
Lucan looked at the Librarian walking toward him, clearly sensing the restless psychic fluctuations from his body.
Osiris also found that as he approached this mortal, the psychic energy on the verge of losing control actually quieted down. He was now beginning to believe what this Rogue Trader had said.
"Osiris?"
"I am he!"
"Please remove your power armor with the assistance of the tech-priests."
"Rogue Trader, this will be very dangerous. The power armor suppresses my psychic energy. If I lose control, it will cause great harm to those around me."
"Don't be ridiculous. Your psychic energy is not enough to harm me. I believe Gabriel must have told you to cooperate with me."
Osiris thought Lucan's words were incredibly arrogant, but he still chose to comply. As the power armor was removed, Osiris found to his astonishment that his psychic energy still showed no signs of agitation.
"By the Emperor... does this laboratory have special psychic suppression facilities?"
"Alright, stop trying to figure it out. Lie down on the operating table!"
As Osiris lay on the table, he looked around. But the area was empty, with no special equipment or instruments. Just as he was still wondering how Lucan was going to solve his problem, the tech-priests began to insert tubes into his body. Needles pierced his skin, and some kind of chemical began to enter his system.
But as the chemical entered, his modified body immediately began to spontaneously break it down and expel it. Yet, a great wave of dizziness still washed over his brain.
"Anesthetic?! What are you doing!!"
But before Osiris could struggle, he had completely passed out. The substance Lucan had injected him with was the very same anesthetic the assassins on Malfi had intended to use on Damon and the others. With the elimination of the cult, this special chemical had been confiscated.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. It can even knock out a Librarian. Not bad, not bad."
"My Lord, the anesthetic has taken effect. His vital signs are stable."
"Very good. Let's begin!"
Lucan released the Divinity Machine from the system, and the tech-priests, with the help of machinery, moved Osiris inside. The Divinity Machine closed.
Lucan injected 10,000 Psy-crystals into it. Based on Ian's results, this amount should be enough to stabilize this Librarian's psychic energy. However, if his psychic level were to increase further, it was hard to say. At that point, Lucan might need to inject more Psy-crystals.
Lucan had no intention of doing it all in one go. A slow and steady stream, keeping the Blood Ravens Chapter in continuous need of this technology, was the best way to firmly bind them to his side.
The enhancement process was short. When Osiris was taken out of the Divinity Machine, he was still unconscious. The tech-priests continued to administer the anesthetic and monitor his vital signs.
Lucan planned to keep Gabriel waiting outside for two days. If it was done in a moment, the other party might think the technology was simple!
