Chapter 555: There's A Block To The Treasure
Mara finished interrogating those pirates while Amber and I looted the two pirate ships that docked with us.
Unfortunately, they didn't really have anything valuable on their ship which meant that they hadn't robbed anyone aside from us today.
I also found out that while their equipment were military grade, they were pretty outdated since they defected quite some time ago and were using equipment from that time.
That's not to say that they aren't at least worth a good amount of Credits though so I still kept them to sell off.
Once we arranged everything properly and dumped all the corpses in one of the pirate ships, we detached them from our ship and let them float away before Lea finished them off.
We would have chosen to sell them but Ries advised against it since those ships used to be military and we might get unwanted attention if we tried.
Although I was quite interested in their cloaking, we wouldn't be able to take them without bringing them to a shipyard and possessing one is supposedly illegal anyway.
Well… If we knew of any black markets here, we could sell them there but since we don't, I opted for the safer path and just destroyed them instead before we flew off.
We were once again gathered on the bridge though this time it was to learn what Mara managed to read from those pirates' minds.
"As you already know, there's a Pirate Lord in the area as well and he's also after the same thing we are. They call themselves the Vengeance Fleet. Apparently the Pirate Lord himself also used to be ex-military before he defected and became a Pirate Lord. The military have been trying to hunt this group down but they have always managed to slip away before they are caught."
Amber nuzzled her cheek against mine as she sat on my lap, "Let me guess… They have informants in the military that warn them ahead of time when the military will attack them?"
Mara nodded, "That's right. But that's not the important thing now. It seems like they have also completed a map of their own and know about the supposed treasure."
"So why aren't they going for it?" I asked, shifting to give Amber a more comfortable angle to cuddle. "They can just use the Warp Gate to warp there, right?"
"That's the problem, Captain. It seems like the Warp Gate is currently being watched by a Leviathan that had turned the area into its hunting ground. Any ship that approaches the area will be attacked by that Leviathan."
I frowned, "Is it the same Leviathan that we saw earlier?"
"No, it's a different one. Seems like we were just unlucky to meet another Leviathan here."
Hmm… Can't say that I'm glad it wasn't that snake thing we met since this meant there were two Leviathans around the area… And if the one guarding the Warp Gate was the same size as the one we met… I don't think we have enough firepower to deal with it.
"I assume there have been conflicts with Leviathans before, right? How did we manage to kill Leviathans?"
Lea perked up at that, "Oh, Mistress. Are you perhaps talking about the Leviathan my people had to deal with when we first made contact with the UTG?"
Oh, I think I've heard of that incident before… I think it was the first contact with the Alvs where they were also panicking over a Leviathan attacking them or something when the humans first met them.
Then humanity offered to help them deal with it since they already have experience in dealing with one as their first contribution in making them join the USC.
I gave the girls a look, "Don't tell me there's also a video of it?"
Lea simply brought up her personal terminal and projected a screen in front of us, the video already prepared to play.
In the video, the Leviathan seemed to be whale shaped and I could tell it was definitely about moon sized since it was chewing on a moon when the video started.
An entire fleet of ships ranging from Cruisers to Battleships and Dreadnaughts were arranged within firing distance and all of them started shooting at it at the same time. From my guess, there must be at least fifty to a hundred ships participating in this fight and that wasn't counting the fighters and bombers the Carriers were launching.
Kinetic rounds, lasers, missiles and torpedoes exploded against the giant whale, the creature opening its jaws as though to let out a wail but there was no sound to be heard.
The whale turned towards the fleet and tried to give chase and the fleet split itself into three groups to fly in three separate directions.
The whale picked one group and 'swam' after it, prompting the other two groups to start shooting.
It then turned to chase after another group which would then break off and start running and the group that had been retreating before would turn back and join the shooting again.
The Leviathan was kept in the middle of this formation and since it had no ranged attacks, all it could do was stay there until it was eventually killed by the concentrated barrage from the fleet.
To see that moon sized creature finally stop moving was both awe inspiring and also a little saddening.
But well, now we have the problem that one of these things was supposedly blocking our way to the treasure we were seeking.
There was absolutely no way our single C Class ship would be able to take one down by itself, not even if Amber and I deployed our fighters as support.
And considering the fact that the Pirate Lord is also stuck and definitely has more ships than we do, we might be in trouble.
"Any chance that we might be able to sneak past the Leviathan to use the Warp Gate?" I asked.
"I'm not sure Captain… We might need to actually see the Leviathan ourselves before we even know."
I let out a sigh and leaned back on my chair, "I guess… We'll just maintain our course for now and go check it out… Just in case… Do we know where the pirate's base is?"
Amber took over and tapped on her personal terminal, bringing up her screen to replace Lea's to show a map of the nearby systems.
The map moved to show the system next to us that had three planets orbiting the star.
"Seems like this isn't really a developed sector," Amber mused before zooming in on the planet furthest away from the star.
This was a frozen planet and a red blinking dot appeared on its surface.
"Hold on… How are we sure it's there?" I asked.
"Hmm? I took it out of their ship's navigation logs, Tera," Amber explained proudly.
Oh, right. I forgot we did that.
"I don't suppose we know how many people they have?"
Mara shook her head, "Unfortunately not. These guys aren't high up enough on the hierarchy to know any of the inner workings of the group. They haven't even seen the Pirate Lord's face either."
"Huh… Since he's ex-military, we should be able to search up some news about him, right?"
Ries scratched her cheek, "Nyaa… Doesn't seem like it, Boss. I already did a search and I think the military wanted to keep the fact that this guy defected secret so there were no reports on this. And it doesn't seem like the Pirate Lord himself is advertising it either."
"Hmm… Are there any other stations in that system then?"
Ries tapped on her personal terminal for a little while before looking back up at me, "Well… There was…"
"There was?"
"Yeah… Apparently that place used to house an orbital research station but it was hit by a solar flare and the entire station fell apart. There's also another research station on that planet where the pirates are staying but it was abandoned after the orbital research station was destroyed. I think we can assume that the pirates are also using that abandoned research station as their base."
"Right… Then what about the Warp Gate?"
Amber manipulated the map again and we zoomed out from the planet before an object started blinking in between the orbits of the second and last planet.
"Right there, Tera. I guess that's also where the Leviathan is."
"I'm more surprised that they would keep a Warp Gate up and running when there's no other stations there…" I mused.
"Oh, it's actually way more expensive to start up and shut down a Warp Gate than to keep it running, Boss," Ries explained.
Huh… Good to know… That means there might be Warp Gates leading to empty systems spread out throughout the galaxy right now… And if the location we're going to had a Warp Gate built there, there's a pretty high chance that it is still functioning even if the place has been abandoned or wiped as long as it's not destroyed.
I let out a sigh, "Alright then… Let's set a course for this system's Warp Gate and warp ourselves to that system to check out their Warp Gate first."
With any luck… Maybe we might be able to sneak past it…
