Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Purging the Filth
Elsewhere—
New York Continental Hotel.
Winston stood facing the Adjudicator. He had hoped to redirect the storm elsewhere, but it was clear that plan had failed. Still, he was ready for war.
The Adjudicator approached Winston and asked coldly:
"Have you decided on your successor?"
Winston's gaze sharpened as he responded solemnly:
"I refuse."
During the past week, Winston hadn't been idle. He'd summoned numerous assassins from around New York—people who owed him favors, or had once pledged a Chīsai Seiyaku (Blood Oath) to him. Only assassins like that would dare oppose the Kōdai Takadai (High Table) at his side.
The Adjudicator, unfazed by his refusal, turned and pulled out a phone. Dialing the Administration Division, she spoke into the receiver:
"I want to modify a contract. Adjudicator 3C434A21—New York Continental Hotel. Decommission it."
After receiving confirmation from the other end, she hung up and turned back toward Winston:
"Winston, this establishment is now decommissioned. That means we can now operate within its walls."
"You refused to step down—now you'll lose your life."
"Agents of the High Table will arrive shortly to purge you from this building."
"Good night, Winston."
With those words, she turned and left, not even sparing him a final glance.
Winston watched her leave and murmured:
"The safe haven... is no longer safe."
He took out his phone and called Charon.
"The fight against the High Table has begun."
With that, he hung up and made his way to the hotel's armory and secure vault.
Moments later, an announcement rang through the hotel:
"Ladies and gentlemen, please be advised—the Continental Hotel is now closed. Operations are suspended."
"We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience."
"Please proceed to the nearest exit."
At the same time, the Adjudicator entered the hotel lounge, where Zero and his disciples sat waiting. She said:
"You may now proceed with your work inside the Continental."
Before leaving, she added:
"We'll send some of our best to support you."
Zero smiled.
"Good. Very good."
The Adjudicator returned to her room, waiting for the judgment to unfold.
Soon after, two armored buses arrived outside the hotel. Dozens of heavily armed killers in high-grade bulletproof suits and helmets exited in formation, weapons ready. They entered the hotel in tactical units.
The massacre had begun.

Elsewhere—
Assassin's Guild Headquarters – The Textile Mill
Three armored buses pulled up outside the textile factory. Before they even reached the gates, bullets came flying.
Tat-tat-tat!
But the gunfire did no damage. The vehicles were fully armored, even the glass was bulletproof.
Without slowing down, the buses smashed through the main gate.
Boom!
Inside, the doors opened and squads of elite assassins spilled out, returning fire toward any hostile positions.
Tat-tat-tat! Tat-tat-tat!
Kira and Cain dashed out behind them, using their bōdan sūtsu (bulletproof suits) to shield their heads as they entered the fray.
On the rooftop, Mr. X sniped with a specialized weapon. Activating bullet time, he took precise shots at necks and faces—areas left exposed.
Despite the High Table's superior gear, Mr. X proved deadly. It just slowed him down.
As both sides exchanged heavy fire, the High Table forces eventually breached the textile mill, forcing Mr. X to reposition.

Meanwhile—
Smith Dole and the others finally reached the Elder's true headquarters deep within the desert. It was hidden in a rare rocky region, an underground base cleverly built and hard to find.
Smith activated his sentōryoku kanshi-ki (combat power scanner). All readings inside the base were under 5. No wonder the Elder had wanted to recruit John Wick so badly.
He turned to Fox and said:
"Tell everyone—it's time."
Fox nodded and immediately contacted Cross and The Gunsmith, notifying them to initiate their attacks.
Both Cross and The Gunsmith led their squads to simultaneously assault Camorra and Gramont.
After entering the base with the Elder, Smith released Poole to support his team and minimize casualties. Though not as strong as Smith, Poole was a top graduate of the Transformation Academy and far superior to the average fighter.
"KILL!"
At Smith's command, the Elder was the first to fall.
Smith charged in with unmatched ferocity, brushing off bullets like they were nothing. Using Rōga Fū-Fū Ken (Wolf Fang Wind Wind Fist), he tore through the High Table soldiers. Nobody could last a single exchange. With the combat scanner, no one could even hide.
Wesley and Fox unleashed hell in dual-gun mode. John Wick moved with ruthless precision, always following up unless the enemy was headshot.
Soon, word of the Elder's defeat spread. Alerts about attacks on Gramont and Camorra also went out.
Smith's team completely wiped out the Elder's forces. No one escaped. Even the hidden ones were found with the scanner.
Though Smith led the charge, they still suffered some losses. At one point, a bomb nearly caught him, but he reacted just in time.
Eight members of his team were injured—including John Wick. Three died, all from grenade blasts. None were killed by gunfire.
Standing amid the cleared base, Smith said:
"One Elder's faction is down. Gather the bodies—we're pulling out!"
This battle had left a deep impression on John Wick. He now understood the terrifying strength of Smith Dole—comparable to America no Taichō (Captain America)—and had gained a clearer sense of the Guild's power.

Elsewhere—
Three simultaneous Elder assaults were reported. The High Table immediately convened an emergency meeting.
On the virtual call, only nine of the twelve Elders appeared.
