Chapter 10: the town of draemir
Now that he had got the quest part out of the way, Kai decided it was time to explore the town of Draemir itself. He ventured out of the thick vegetation he had just spent the night in and marvelled at the brilliant sunlight. Thankfully, aside from the fact that it shone a whole deal brighter than he was used to, there was nothing so outlandish about the Pomegron sun. Matter of fact, Kai was sure there were places on earth, in his world where the sun shone just as bright.
So if there was such a sun where the hell had it been all these time? Kai could only come to the conclusion that night time took a lot of time here. Hopefully, the day would take just as long.
He looked around him curiously. In the bright light he saw that he was actually just outside the town itself. His desperate flight during the night had carried him out of town. To the south, just beyond the vegetation he had bedded down in were vast barren fields. There was no hint on green on the large expanse of land. Rather, the soil was dry and cracked with only a few stubborn pushing through.
But that was not all. Squinting closely, he could see that scattered across the fields were the remnants of abandoned farming tools. Intrigued, Kai went over to have a closer look. He did not know if the Arcane Register was messing with him or not regarding the 'rewards' but he actually did feel stronger already.
On the fields, he found rusted plows, broken carts, and empty sack. All were either incredibly dry or incredibly rusted. No doubt, they had been lying here for a very long time. So many questions were running through Kai's mind. If farming tools were here, then it meant that these fields were not always dry. Matter-of-fact, they must have been brimming with crops. Whatever had happened had made the farmers abandon not only their farmlands but also their tools. It did not sound like something small.
Beyond the fields, a good distance away a dense forest loomed. Even from where he was, Kai could see that the trees were tall and gnarled, their branches twisting like skeletal fingers.
Now, it was not like anything about this entire place was remotely safe but the forest as far as it was, was immediately different gravy to Kai. He shuddered as he looked at it. It was as if evil itself emanated from it as the dry trees smiled twistedly and glared at him.
He turned his attention back to the town itself. He had seen some of it last night from the doorway of the shack but now that he was standing outside and looking at it, it looked even more desolate. It was nothing more than a patchwork of crumbling shacks and dilapidated structures. The buildings were made of weathered wood and cracked stone, with roofs that sagged under the weight of neglect. Kai thought briefly that he had to be thankful for that at least. Otherwise, he might not have been able to escape. Another thing he immediately observed was that many of the walls were scorched or scarred. He could tell that they were remnants of past attacks. But from who or rather from what?
The same personalities that had made the farmers abandon their tools and run for their lives? The night beasts perhaps? He needed answers. He wouldn't get the answers just standing around here. There were people in the town. He was sure of that, thanks to that fellow who had tried to warn him that time.
And there was another mystery. That lad had called him Kaiair and for some reason had seemed surprised that Kai was there at all.
Then it hit him like a blow to the stomach. Of course!
How dense could he be? He was in someone else's body! And that person whose name it would appear, weirdly enough, was in fact Kaiair, had a life here. He had most likely been born here, grown up here and knew people in town. He wondered briefly where that person was now? And what had happened that had made him take over his body?
More importantly, what would he do when he got to the village? How did Kaiair behave? Who were his friends? What had happened to him that would make that fellow ask what he was doing in the shack. Something terrible must have happened to Kaiair and he had no idea what it was.
By and by, he arrived at the village. The air of desolation was everywhere and at first, Kai did not see anyone. He went forward a a little and found himself arriving at what was a village square. Or at least what he assumed must have been a village square in some times past. Now, it was nothing more than a desolate space filled with debris. A broken fountain sat in the centre, it basin filled with murky water and dead leaves. Around the square, the remnants of market stalls stood like skeletons, their awnings torn and flapping in the breeze.
Kai gazed on the desolation with a mixture of wonder and sadness. If any town needed saving, it was definitely Draemir.
A slight rustle behind him made him whirl back suddenly realising as he did that he was absolutely defenseless. But he needn't have worried. Standing behind him was a simply gorgeous young girl. She was so pretty, Kai wondered if he was imagining her. Bright red curls framed her delicate white features. Green eyes stared at him, questions written all over them while her full red lips also pursed with curiosity. She was wearing a threadbare robe that though did not actually reveal anything still did little to hide the curves of her body.
Kai blinked several times. He was caught completely offguard. It could not be. After staring at desolation for so long, he gazed at the stunning vision like a man who had hurt come upon an oasis in the desert. Eventually when he was able to get a bit of senses back together, he told himself that it did not make sense. What in the world was this beauty doing in such a desolate place as this?
