Chapter 9: the 'day' after
Kai did not know how long he ran for. At some point the only thing he was aware of was the sound of his feet pounding again the ground and his heart beating fiercely within his ribcage as if they were going to burst. But none of that mattered to him. Every now and then, he would look back to see if anyone or anything was after him but nothing. It was not like he could see them anyway. But at least the telltale sound of their breathing or that cursed shriek would give them away. But he neither heard nor saw anything. At last, his strength gave out completely and he sank to the ground unable to take another step.
Yet, he could not stay here. He raised a weary head and looked around him. It was then he realised that the environment was brightening up. But that was not Kai's immediate concern.
By some lucky chance, he had collapsed just a little way from a thick set of vegetation. He figured that if he could get among the grasses, he would be hidden from view. And that was exactly what he needed.
He was spent and completely out of breath and he could not even get up. So he crawled forward, every bone in his new body screaming with pain at every tiny movement. But he kept crawling until he was among the vegetation. He did not take another second before he fell fast asleep.
It was the feeling of bright light flooding into his closed eyes that woke him up. Kai blinked severally as he roused into brilliant sunlight. At first, he could not remember where he was. He sat up slowly and looked around him. Why was he sleeping among grass? Where was his magnificent four-poster bed? Why was he seeing a barren land with nothing as far as the eyes could see stretching far away instead of his view of the lake in his penthouse apartment?
He looked down at himself and it all came back to him in a rush. He was no longer Kai Drayken. Corporate mogul. Business executive. Top of the food chain. Rich, handsome and well-built. Nope, he was none of that now. He was now a lost, frail lad in this weird place called Draemir in the kingdom of Pomegranate or something weird like that and he was somehow playing a weird game of survival. His destiny.
Where was the parchment even? He felt among his robes feverishly. The Register had warned him to keep it tight. If he had somehow dropped it in the shack...
But it was right with him. He pulled it out with relief. The thought of having to go back to that shack did not really sit well with him. The screen slid into place as soon he looked at it almost as if it had been waiting for him and from the words that appeared there, it had been.
'Ah, sleepy-head. I thought you would never wake up. Congratulations on passing the first mission! As you can see, you have survived the night.
Despite himself, Kai found that he was very pleased.
'Very funny.' He returned dryly to the screen. 'I almost died!'
'What are you talking about? I can clearly see that you are happy. Anyway, congratulations! You have passed the first mission. You have successfully survived the night. Your reward has been updated. Twenty percent increase in strength. You also got a bonus. A life vial! Use it wisely and don't die needlessly.
An extra word, a point of correction. You almost died, it is true. But as you are here with us, you did not quite die.'
'Not funny.' Kai said again. But this time, he was grinning from ear to ear. Now that he was sitting in broad daylight, the events of the previous night suddenly seemed heroic. Exhilarating even. He had done it! Against all odds, he had somehow bested that huge, ferocious, invisible, shrieking monster and escaped successfully. Maybe he would survive this world after all. Maybe this entire game wasn't even so bad in the end.
But the Register still had something more for him.
'Now, are you ready for your next mission?'
What?!
'What do you mean next mission?' He demanded.
'Well, I did tell you it was only your first mission.' The Register informed him. 'Now are you ready for your next mission?'
Again, Kai did not see how he got a choice. He could already tell from the way the beasts has found him that the system wouldn't let him rest easy. Of course, it could always be a coincidence that the beast had decided to enter his shack out of all the shacks, but Kai decided it was better to know what was coming so he could at least prepare. For example, what if he hadn't known that he was supposed to 'survive the night'?
He might have just gone to sleep or something or been far more unprepared when the beast showed up.
'Okay, alright. Just let me know, what's the next mission.'
'The next mission. Save the village of Draemir from the night beasts.
Reward:
- 50 percent increase in strength,
- 10 percent mana unlocked,
- 10 percent skillset unlocked.
- Two life vials
Failure: Death. Do well to remember you have just one life vial at the moment.
Goodluck!'
And the screen went off before he could ask any further questions.
Kai looked down and sighed deeply. Save the village of Draemir from the night beasts??!
He had barely escaped himself! And he was so glad that he was finally shut of those dreadful shrieking monsters. But now, he would learn that he had to not only go back to combat them once again, the success of his next quest depended on completely eliminating them from this blasted city. And failure meant death. Who knew where he would awaken this time? Maybe right back in the shack where it all began. There was no guarantees that he would succeed again. He doubted he would even remember anything that had happened. But there was nothing to be done about it. The quest awaited and it had to be done.
