Chapter 8: torch and scorch
Kai's heart dropped like a stone. His worst fears were coming true! Another night beast was on the way. As if that was the cue it was waiting for, the adversary in the room with him, suddenly came to life shrieking out a response that almost startled Kai to oblivion, followed by another dreadful round of cackling.
Kai forced himself not to think about what would happen when the other night beast got here. He just kept on striking the stones away like his life depended on it. Because of course it did.
The night beast in the shack had shrieked two more times and had suddenly began a gliding advance for him when the stones finally ignited and he lit the torch with a brilliant burst of blue flame.
Grabbing the torch, Kai waved it as violently as he could in the direction of his adversary hoping desperately that it would work.
And there it was!
It was faint but he saw it from the shadow. The beast recoiled ever so slightly! Thinking quickly, Kai grabbed three more torches and lit them as quickly as he could. He was not a moment too soon. A cold draught of wind suddenly gushed over him and the torch he held in his outstretched hand went out like a candle in a windstorm. The night beast had extinguished it. It shrieked loudly. Somewhere out there, the other responded. Now that he finally had something, Kai knew he had to go on the offensive. He grabbed one of the torches he had lit and hurled it in the direction of the beast.
The next scream that rent the air was clearly one of pain. From the shadows, he could see his adversary writhing even as he watched the fire burn brightly in the air right in front of him. Kai hurled and hurled as the night beast screamed again and again. This time the shrieks that responded from outside were more than one. With his adversary battling with the flames that had enveloped him, Kai knew it was time to leave. The only problem was that the beast even though it was still writhing was directly blocking the door to the shack.
Kai dared not try to dart around his adversary. Fire or no fire, he might make make it. He looked around in panic as the screams of the approaching monsters became closer and closer. They were obviously aware that one of their own was in trouble. If they found him here, or anywhere at all, it was curtains.
Just as he resolved to dart around the beast anyway, he looked up at the ceiling. The material was crumbling already. He could escape through it.
Springing into action, he raced for the cupboard and climbed on it. From there, he reached for the ceiling and tore it around with ease. Cold wind rushed through the gap he had just created and he shivered.
A single leap and he would be through. A sound made him look down. The night beast still burning was streaking towards him. If he jumped, he could still make it. But it was then that Kai saw a need for the green powder he had seen in the second compartment of the drawer. What was the point escaping to the roof when the night beast could merely jump out and give chase. Clearly, even though it was burning, it could still move!
He pulled the vial out and emptied the contents onto his hands in one fluid move. Then he flung it in the direction of where he thought his enemy's eyes would be.
Bullseye!
The beast shrieked yet again and reared back. Kai could clearly see it batting at its eyes. And then something incredible happened. As if appearing from the air, a set of blood-red eyes suddenly popped up and glaring devilishly.
But the entire area was now agog with the shrieks of the ferocious beasts and now that Kai had finally seen a way out, he was not willing to wait around to investigate what he was currently seeing.
With one mighty heave, he pulled himself up through the gap and up unto the roof. He had merely seconds and he knew it. This body he was in now also did not have much strength left and he also knew that. He had been running on plain adrenaline for the past few actions and it would give way eventually soon.
Scanning the environment as quickly as he could, he decided to go north. The beasts were lumbering in from the south, he could hear it from their shrieks. As dreadful as it was, he was glad it helped give a sense about their location.
At the moment, the most important thing was for him to put as much distance as possible between himself and the dreadful shrieking creatures below. He moved across the fragile roof and shimmied down to the other side.
Hopefully, when the other night beasts arrived in the building, they would be more concerned with helping out their burning colleague than giving chase. He did not wait to find out though. He just high-tailed it out of there as fast as his now weakening body could carry him. Behind him, the shrieking of the night beasts continued non-stop.
And although Kai did not know it at the time, the other villagers were in their shacks cowering in fear and wondering what was going on. They had heard the night beast's shrieks before now but they had never heard such a sustained din before. In another shack, the lad who had warned Kai was telling his tale to his family.
But of course, none of this was Kai's problem even if he knew about it. All he was that he had to move and keep moving.
