.....

Even from afar, the smell of blood seemed to thicken in the air.

The trees looked overhead, shadows stretching against the forest floor. The sound of zip lines, and ODM cables broke through the peaceful calm of nature.

Upon reaching the Northern Forest Grove, The Garrison soldiers immediately switched to ODM gear.

Height.

Only a sufficient enough elevation point could make these panicked soldiers calm down. Abandoning their horses, their all swung in the same direction, deeper and deeper into the Grove.

The group did so in silence. Not one person uttering a single word. Until …

"… We … We should stop. The Titans are gone …". It worked. The group stopped fleeing from their lives, all coming to a halt on the tall tree branches, high enough to ensure they wouldn't be caught by Titans.

They stopped, all panting heavily. Many had their uniforms stained with blood, none of it their own.

They had run.

They had abandoned the Formation.

The realization sat heavy in their stomachs, all remembering how they darted through the dense foliage. Leaving behind those who needed them.

Many trembled. The screams of their dying comrades still echoing in their ears.

"Shit! Shit! Shit! -- What. … What do we do?" One of them gasped.

It was like a thunderbolt had struck down from the sky. No one uttered a word, carefully weighing the possible consequences of their actions.

They had run. In direct duty, they had abandoned their posts and left their teammates for dead. Quite frankly, they were deserters.

Coming to this realization, many had their faces turn pale. This was bad, like really bad.

"… If we go back, they'll arrest us for Desertion". Someone said the last words they wanted to hear.

"Forget arrest. We might be executed outright. Worse, they might leave us out here for dead".

"Forget giving us horses. They'll confiscate our gear. We'll be Titan food".

"… I knew I shouldn't have come. I knew I shouldn't …".

"You, this is your fault!"

A blond male soldier of young age roared, pointing towards another.

"Me?"

"Yes you". The young man replied. "You were supposed to take off first. Instead of switching to Maneuver Gear, you led us to ride away".

"Are you sick?" The middle-aged man who was being accused lost it after recovering from his shock.

His face contorted with fury as he held him by his collar.

"Repeat what you just said, you brat!"

"It's true. You are our leader. W-We saw you running away … And we ... we instinctively followed … This is your fault …".

The tense argument between the deserters escalated.

The older soldier gritted his teeth, eyes burning with fury as he held the younger man's collar in a vice grip.

"You're blaming me? You all followed without hesitation! I joined The Garrison to guard the walls, not die beyond them. I don't know about you, but I have a sister, wife, and a baby on the way, and I am not dying here. Don't act like you didn't make the same damn choice!"

"Does it matter now! We abandoned our teammates!" The young man roared, his fear amplifying with every passing second. "We're all doomed!"

"Shut up! No, we aren't". The middle-aged man yelled before tossing the soldier down, the latter nearly tumbling off the branch downwards.

"… Yes, we abandoned our teammates. And yes, our actions are punishable by death …". He uttered, sweeping his gaze past all seven of them.

Five males and two females.

In that moment, his face hardened. "But that is only if anyone else finds out".

"Huh?"

"Huh?"

"Huh?"

The words confused everyone. Seeing this, he reiterated further. "We may have deserted, but we were the only ones who escaped. Meaning, we are the only ones who know about it. As long as we plead that we barely escaped with our lives, as long as no one else saw us, as long as we all decide to keep our mouth shut about this … No one will know".

The air fell silent. Obviously, they understood what he meant.

Even the yelling young man had fallen silent.

The silence lasted for a few seconds. Until, he spoke again.

"Our objective is to assist the scout Team. Now, let us forget that this ever happened. If you value your life, no one should utter a word".

".... I see. Does that include me? …". A voice cut through the tense air.

The world froze.

Every soldier stiffened, their heads snapping up toward the sound.

Perched lazily on a thick branch above them sat a lone figure, one leg dangling over the edge. His posture was almost relaxed, as though he had been watching them for some time.

Long black hair framed an angular face, and a pair of piercing red eyes gleamed like embers in the fading light.

Instantly, the all had their eyes widen.

"... Is … Isn't that? …"

"… From the description, it is". The middle-aged man spoke, a cold wave of dread washing over them all. Right above them was the objective of this expedition. Seiji Uchiha.

"How long has he been there?"

"… He … He heard us …?"

'Dammit! How did we not notice him?' The middle-aged man swore internally. The prime objective of this suicidal expedition had overheard them. No doubt, this was bad. Like, very bad.

The sound of drawn blades resounded.

The soldiers were startled, turning the heads to see their Garrison leader armed with weapons.

"How much of that did you hear?" The middle-aged man said, staring at Seiji guardedly.

"…. Pretty much, all of it".

"I see". His face darkened, his grip on his weapons tightening.

"In that case …".

"Sir? What are you doing?" A female soldier yelled at that moment, sensing the atmosphere wasn't right.

"What do you think I'm doing?" He yelled back. Everyone paled.

"You're not going to attack him, are you?"

"He's the main objective. Commander Erwin told us not to …".

"Be Quiet You Idiots!"

He roared. "He's already heard everything. What do you think will happen if he gets the chance to speak with Erwin?"

"I'll tell you what. We all die. No other options. Do you understand this?"

"...".

"It's either him. Or us. Once the truth is revealed, we'll all be abandoned."

"There's only one choice here. We eliminate him before the rest of the corps arrive."

"Are you crazy?" Another shouted.

"Didn't you hear anything Commander Erwin said at the debriefing? He took out The Garrison. He's dangerous."

"Then tell me. What would you have us do now?"

".. I …".

"Tell me. Do you have any other viable options here?"

"...". No one spoke.

"Just as I thought. Besides …". He said turning his attention to the youth above. He hadn't moved from his position since this all happened.

"... I call bullshit. He was able to defeat so many soldiers simply because they had no time to utilize their Maneuver Gear. We are different". He said through gritted teeth.

"We?"

"Yes we. Don't tell me you're going to chicken out?"

No matter how desperate he was, what happened to The Garrison, no matter how much he tried to dismiss it, couldn't be ignored.

Fear and desperation had pushed him to this point, but it hadn't dulled his senses to the point of committing suicide. In his assumptions, going against someone who could beat The Garrison would be the direct equivalent of it. If they were going to pull this off, everyone had to participate. Not to mention, doing this would likely cement their secret. No one would be dumb enough to report this once the deed has been done.

The whole scene fell into silence. The middle-aged man watched the rest fall into hesitation.

The seconds passed and nobody moved. Until someone did.

Seiji, who had been sitting to watch the show began to stand up.

'Damn! He's going to run away!'.

The middle-aged man gritted his teeth, seeing Seiji move. "Fine. I'll do it myself".

Odm cables fired from his gear, latching to a higher branch above Seiji. 'The Garrison soldiers said this guy was fast …'. Following which, the man was pulled upward at a fast speed.

'…. In that case, I'll burn my gas and move as fast as I can. One strike …'.

-----

Seiji's POV

-----

'… It seems, The novels were right'. Two gleaming red eyes watched the man swing over in ultra-slow motion.

Right then and there, Seiji resisted the urge to facepalm. It really irritated him. Partially because those ridiculous web novels he read in his past life actually came to fruition in reality.

'And here I thought a bloodless show of Power would be enough'.

No surprise, humanity was stupid. Now, he couldn't even muster the energy to get angry. The members of The Garrison Regiment in the Attack on Titan world were severely lacking. Not necessarily in skill, but certainly in bravery and willpower.

Well, this man lacked the courage to fight Titans but had enough of it to face him.

Just from the dialogue he heard, Seiji could deduce that this was their first expedition. And these fools had abandoned their teammates in fear, leading to this situation.

In the military, disobeying orders was enough to get you killed.

In hindsight, however, whether they were fools or not, was up for debate. He heard the man's words. Quite frankly, if saving one's own life was a foolish act, then a lot more fools would exist, him being one of them.

This man's actions were a mixture of fear and desperation. And if anything, Seiji kinda sympathized.

'Oh, well, guess It wasn't enough'. Make no mistake. Sympathy and mercy were two different words.

Seiji sighed internally as the man rocketed toward him, blade gleaming under the fading sunlight.

'At least he's not hesitating.'

That was about the only good thing he could say about the poor bastard.

His Sharingan spun, the world slowing to a crawl. The man's trajectory was painfully obvious, his approach riddled with openings. Even if Seiji didn't have superhuman reflexes, even if he weren't trained in combat, the man's intentions were so blatantly telegraphed that dodging was almost insulting.

The sound of a weapon being drawn from its sheath faded into the wind. Too fast for anyone else to react to.

A blur of motion—Seiji's arm flickered, his blade slicing out.

The first thing he cut was the man's ODM cables, the lines cut off, disabling the core function of the Maneuver Gear. The blade continued to move, however, effortlessly slicing through the air before cutting through flesh and bone like paper.

SQUELCH!

"Aghhh!" A bloodcurdling scream tore through the forest.

The soldier's ODM cables lost tension as his body twisted midair, crashing onto the branch in a heap. With a cloud of smoke, a Kunai appeared in Seiji's other hand as he struck downward.

Lodging into the soldier's leg just before the soldier could fall off the other end of the branch. The blood-curdling scream continued.

The middle-aged man's face turned ghastly pale.

His swords? Gone. His hands? Severed a few inches below the wrist. Blood splattered across the bark as the man writhed on the tree limb, his screams filling the air. The other soldiers recoiled in horror, their expressions a mix of terror and nausea.

Seiji, meanwhile, remained still, sword dripping with fresh blood.

"I apologize for the blade lodged in your leg. Couldn't have you falling off to your death no, could I?"

The tension thickened, the atmosphere grew suffocating.

For a long, breathless moment, no one moved.

The remaining soldiers, who had been hesitating, who had been on the verge of drawing their own blades, froze completely.

Seven pairs of terrified eyes snapped toward Seiji.

Their leader—the one who had just rallied them, the one who tried to kill Seiji—had been dispatched in an instant.

And Seiji?

He barely looked like he had moved at all.

Then, he spoke.

"I'll be honest." He exhaled, cracking his neck. "I wasn't planning to kill any of you."

The words hung in the air like a death sentence.

Somehow, that made it worse.

"I figured," Seiji continued, his voice unnervingly calm, "that you were all just scared. That maybe, with the right push, you'd remember why you came out here in the first place."

He tilted his head, eyes narrowing slightly.

"But then he just had to try something stupid."

He glanced downward where the soldier lay sprawled and groaning in pain. Blood pooling from his severed limbs.

He wasn't going anywhere, and would most likely die from blood loss.

"… So," Seiji mused, looking back at the remaining six, "should I assume you'll try the same thing?"

The response was immediate.

"NO!" One of them blurted, shaking their head wildly. "We–we weren't going to—"

"We swear!" A female soldier gasped, her voice trembling. "Please, we–we don't want to die!"

"Good." Seiji's eyes gleamed. "Then we have an understanding."

He took a step forward.

They flinched.

He took another step.

Someone whimpered.

"I don't particularly care that you ran," Seiji admitted, rolling his shoulders. "I don't even care that you left your comrades behind."

That wasn't entirely true—he did care. A part of him, the part that remembered the horrors of Attack on Titan's world, felt disgusted.

But he also understood. Fear was a powerful thing. And more than that…

He wasn't a soldier. Not really.

He wasn't here to enforce their sense of duty.

He was here for himself.

"But what I do care about," he continued, his voice dropping an octave, "is that you just tried to kill me to keep your little secret."

The air felt thick with tension.

"Now, that's a problem."

The soldiers stiffened.

In the next instant, all of them turned, preparing to jump off the branches and escape into the forest.

Seiji exhaled.

"However, I don't want to get your blood on my hands, so I'll have the Titans do it."

Their movements halted. Confused, they glanced downward.

Then they saw it.

Three Titans had gathered below, their towering forms shifting through the trees. Glowing, inhuman eyes peered hungrily up at them.

The deserters froze, their faces draining of color.

Seiji, still holding his bloodstained sword, lowered himself near the armless soldier who was still groaning in agony.

He stretched out his hand to the Kunai holding him in place. Removing it was all it would take.

The man felt it—pain spreading alongside the weight shifting as the weapon that caused him continuous agony was being removed. His eyes widened in horror.

"N-No! WAIT! PLEASE—!"

He never got to finish.

Seiji moved to yank it out.

Then—

The sound of a projectile cut through the air in his direction.

Seiji tilted his head.

BANG!

The grappling cable whizzed past, embedding itself into the tree trunk behind him—right where his head had been a moment ago.

A fraction of a second later—

A figure shot forward.

Fast. Too fast.

Twin blades gleamed under the filtered light.

Seiji's eyes narrowed.

His body instantly turning into a blur.

He vanished.

BANG!

Steel clashed against wood, splitting the bark in a violent burst. Numerous cracks emerged all over the tree trunk, displaying the power force used to attack it.

On another branch, Seiji reappeared, hands in his pockets, his crimson gaze calm as he studied the new arrival.

Short height, black hair. A sharp gaze. The unmistakable emblem of the Wings of Freedom.

No introduction was needed.

With that speed and skill, it was obvious.

The soldier lowered his blades, regarding Seiji with an unreadable expression.

"Looks like Hange wasn't lying…" he muttered, voice cool and controlled. "You are quite fast."

Levi Ackerman.
