Chapter 207: Chapter 207: The Nightmare Corrosion
Richard attempted to use his mental energy to trace the connection into the Nightmare World, but the energy could not break through the dimensional barrier without amplification.
"This is strange. There's clearly a connection, yet it's being blocked?"
Richard opened a portal and pulled Ulysses out of it.
After listening to Richard's explanation, Ulysses responded, "Gah, the Nightmare Artifact fused with your Nightmare Core, didn't it? This connection probably isn't the Artifact directly linking to your soul, but rather, it's connecting through the link between your soul seed and your soul."
Upon hearing Ulysses' explanation, Richard immediately understood.
He could transmit soul messages to the Nightmare World through the link between his soul seed and soul, so it made sense that the reverse could work as well.
However, this meant his excitement was for nothing.
Without being able to use the Nightmare Artifact, this connection was pointless.
Suddenly, Richard felt a slight tremor.
A vague sensation washed over him.
The Nightmare rules within his body seemed to... resonate with this connection.
"Number One!" Richard suddenly shouted.
Within seconds, Number One, dressed in a cat maid outfit, appeared before Richard, looking down and softly asking, "Master, what is your command?"
"Lift your head."
Number One obeyed, raising her head to meet Richard's gaze. Her pale blue eyes were calm, but a hint of fear was still visible.
She didn't know what her master wanted.
Having been in contact with other subhuman slaves from the Wizard Tower, she knew many of them were used for human experiments, and the tragic outcomes of those experiments were deeply etched into her mind.
"I hope this isn't an experiment."
She forced herself to remain composed and followed Richard's command.
The moment she lifted her head, she realized that her master's Dragon Eyes seemed to have a dark aura.
"Follow me. I have an experiment that requires your cooperation," Richard said calmly.
Richard's voice immediately caused Number One's heart to drop. Like a puppet, she followed Richard into the laboratory, only to watch him pull out a pitch-black insect with countless writhing tentacles.
She had seen this insect before—on a subhuman used as an experiment by wizards.
This insect was a parasite, feeding slowly on the flesh under the host's skin, all while the host remained conscious, unable to feel pain.
In the end, the insect would consume the entire body, leaving only the brain, where the parasite's hallucinogen would put the host into an eternal slumber.
Number One involuntarily took two steps back, collapsing to her knees weakly.
Was she going to face the same fate?
She watched as Richard approached with the parasite, and it inched closer to her.
"Open your mouth."
Number One violently shook her head, crawling to her master's feet, begging with tears streaming down her face.
But she was met with the cold, unfeeling gaze of Richard.
She was forcibly tied to the test table, her mouth pried open with tools, and watched as the horrifying parasite entered her mouth, starting from her tongue, slowly making its way down her throat, and then...
"Ah!"
Number One screamed as her eyes snapped open, realizing she was staring at Richard, who was calmly observing her.
"What happened to you?" Richard asked, pulling out a notebook.
Number One touched her mouth, looked around, and realized the entire scene had been an illusion.
She wiped the cold sweat off her forehead and began to explain everything she had seen.
At that moment, she understood—her master had indeed used her for an experiment, but it wasn't as she had imagined.
After hearing Number One's description, Richard closed the notebook, rubbed her head, and told her to take three days off.
"So this is the ability Nightmare rules gave me?"
From Number One's description, Richard could confirm that he had gained the ability to make others fall into nightmares.
This nightmare was made up of the person's greatest fears, but without causing mental harm.
While using this ability, Richard noted that his mental energy consumption was about one unit, and Number One's immersion in the nightmare lasted about one minute.
Richard estimated that the energy consumption must be related to the mental strength of the target.
"Not bad. This would be perfect for interrogations."
After testing the ability, Richard prepared to enter the laboratory again. However, as soon as he took a step, a magical pulse suddenly pulled him to the third floor.
It was a long-range communication crystal's magical pulse.
He found the crystal and examined the message.
"Richard, is that golem still around? I'd like to borrow it."
---
In Anna's Wizard Tower, Richard opened a portal and brought the alchemical golem from the other side.
Looking at the golem with its new blue mushroom iron exterior, Anna's gaze shifted from astonishment to admiration.
She gave Richard a thumbs up:
"You really know how to exploit things."
Richard smiled. With the Miracle Furnace in hand, refining ores was something he could definitely take advantage of.
Anna's mechanical right hand touched the golem, and with a flick of her finger, a magical glow appeared, causing a metal plate to detach from the golem.
Seeing that the internal structure hadn't changed, Anna sighed in relief.
"Good thing you only changed the shell. Otherwise, this golem would have been useless."
Richard, curious, asked, "Sister, aside from being cheap, does this golem have any special properties?"
Richard had also studied the golem over the years, but after a thorough examination, he found that its structure seemed ordinary. The only thing that stood out was the cheap materials.
Anna glanced at Richard, then pulled out a parchment from her waist pouch.
"While it doesn't have any special properties, it does have one if you add this."
Richard raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Looks like you've found something good."
Anna grinned and hummed a little tune. "Heh, thanks to you, I've collected some coded notes over the years. This one contains something hidden under a sealing spell. It's exactly what I need."
"So, what are you planning to do with this golem?" Richard asked. "If you want the design, I can just give it to you."
"Give it to me?"
Anna frowned, walking over to Richard and giving his head a sharp knock with her left hand.
"Is this how you treat the knowledge you've discovered? Don't you know that knowledge transfer between wizards involves equivalent exchange, except for master-apprentice relationships?"
Richard rubbed his head nonchalantly. "Well, since you've already offered the exchange, why should I bring it up?"
Anna shot him a glare. "Fine. Next time I won't offer it! Let's see if you learn your lesson after losing twice."
Richard grinned, "Don't be angry, don't be angry. It's not good for your health. You're the one getting the good deal here, and you're making it seem like I'm the one benefiting."
Seeing Richard's playful expression, Anna huffed and pushed him out of the Wizard Tower.
"Go, go. I have my own uses for this puppet. I'll let you know when I'm done with the research."
With a loud slam, Anna closed the door.
Richard stood outside, shouting, "Hey, Sister! You still haven't paid me!"
From behind the door, Anna's angry voice came through:
"No more! You're already giving me the design; what's the point of this small amount of money?"
Hearing this, Richard stroked his chin and smirked.
"Desensitization reaction, big success."
Since the academic exchange in the Insect Nest World, Richard had been trying to challenge some of the rigid ideas in the wizarding community.
Research outcomes can certainly be private, but wizards were too extreme about it, treating every little detail as a treasure. Even asking about a research topic was considered an offense.
Richard was trying to break this notion, laying the foundation for future academic seminars.
He believed that societal change starts with changing individuals.
Perhaps one day, the entire wizarding community would change because of his actions.
---
Back at the Wizard Tower, Richard finally entered the laboratory.
Looking at the crystal ball on the experiment table, Richard sighed.
Inside the crystal ball was a fragmented rune, the Mountain Heart Rune he had obtained in the Mountain Realm.
A year had been too short, and Richard had barely made any progress on completing this rune.
Now, after leaving the Mountain Realm, seeing the incomplete rune made Richard feel as if he had a treasure mountain but no way to access it.
The Mountain Heart Rune was extremely complex, and even a master wizard who specialized in runes would likely need time to finish it. Richard, as a second-ring wizard with little accumulated knowledge, had no hope of completing it.
So, Richard chose a different approach.
Since completing it was impossible, he could try breaking down some simpler runes from this complex, incomplete Mountain Heart Rune.
This wasn't considered an innovation among wizards, as Richard had previously used this technique when creating the Heart of Annihilation. He had extracted some basic secondary runes from the Dimming Flame Rune and the Obscure Water Rune to assist in forming spells.
The most important part was whether the secondary runes would function correctly through repeated experimentation.
This was a tedious and long process. Most mortals would never find a valid secondary rune in their lifetime.
But wizards didn't lack time.
---
Twenty years later, a magical pulse woke Richard from his experiment.
He had to stop working on the runes he had just disassembled and find his long-range communication crystal.
The crystal displayed two messages: one from Anna. Her research on the golem was complete, and she informed Richard that he could come collect it.
The other mes
sage was more important:
