Chapter 62: 062 Pakura's Escape Plan
Pakura didn't expect that while peacefully eating melon, the trouble would land on her.
To establish a peace treaty with Kirigakure, would the Kazekage sacrifice her?
Pakura, after all, was a representative powerhouse of Sunagakure, comparable to Kakashi Hatake of Konohagakure or the Two-Tails Jinchūriki of Kumogakure. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call her one of the strongest forces in the ninja world.
She thought to herself, how could this be possible? How could Rasa make such a foolish decision?
"Could it be that this guy knows I can see the diary and is intentionally trying to disrupt morale?"
Frowning slightly, Pakura was more inclined to question the diary's authenticity than to suspect the Kazekage of Sunagakure.
After all, the contents of the diary had not been witnessed by her own eyes and couldn't be entirely trusted.
As Pakura was silently pondering, a Sunagakure ninja entered the room and respectfully said to her:
"Lady Pakura, the Kazekage requests your presence."
Hearing this, Pakura is heart sank. She silently stood up and followed the ninja to the Kazekage's office.
Upon entering, she saw Rasa sitting behind his desk with a smile, his attitude very cordial.
"Pakura, there's an important mission that requires your personal attention."
Rasa's strength was on par with Pakura is, both standing at the Kage-level threshold.
His ascension to Kazekage was largely due to his Magnet Release: Gold Dust ability, an invaluable asset to the economically strained Sunagakure.
Even so, Rasa's rise as Kazekage faced opposition within the village, with many believing that Pakura was more suited for the position.
The reason was that to maintain the income from Gold Dust, Rasa rarely participated in battles during the Third Shinobi World War and the war against Kirigakure.
In contrast, Pakura fought on the front lines alongside her comrades.
This led to a subtle dynamic: among civilians, Rasa, who brought financial benefits to the village, had high prestige. But among most ninjas, Pakura, with her Scorch Release, was deemed the more suitable leader for Sunagakure.
However, Pakura had no intention of competing for the Kazekage position.
She was well aware that she was best suited for carrying out missions and lacked the intellect and foresight required to lead a village.
"Please speak, Lord Kazekage," she said.
Rasa smiled and slowly began:
"Recently, Kirigakure has been negotiating peace with us. The terms have all been settled, but there's one condition."
"What condition?"
"They specifically requested that you, as Sunagakure's envoy, go to the Land of Water to sign the treaty."
Hearing this condition, Pakura is eyes flickered, and a terrifying thought emerged in her mind.
Could the diary be telling the truth?
Was the village really planning to sacrifice her to secure peace with Kirigakure?
Rasa, unaware of Pakura is change in expression, sighed and pretended to be helpless.
"You understand our village's financial situation isn't optimistic. The Daimyo's funding decreases year by year. If the fighting continues, we won't be able to sustain the costs of ninja pensions, frontline supplies, or soldier pills."
"For the village's future, I hope you can see the bigger picture."
The more reasons Rasa gave for Sunagakure's need to cease hostilities, the more Pakura was convinced of the diary's account.
Did these reasons justify sacrificing her life?
Recalling the countless battles she had fought for the village, Pakura suddenly felt a deep sense of irony.
A trace of subtle hatred flashed in her beautiful eyes. Clenching her teeth, she forced a smile and said:
"Since it's the Kazekage's request, I naturally won't refuse for the village's sake."
"I'm glad you understand."
Rasa nodded in satisfaction and said with a smile:
"In that case, set off as soon as possible. After all, the journey from the Land of Wind to the Land of Water is quite long."
"I understand."
Back in her own home, Pakura sighed softly as she contemplated her impending fate.
With her strength, she could indeed leave Sunagakure and live elsewhere.
But the relationship between ninja villages and ninjas wasn't that simple.
According to the rules, ninjas couldn't leave their village and join another.
For any reason, leaving one's village would make a ninja a rogue-nin, wanted by all five great villages.
Pakura didn't want to live a life on the run, constantly hunted and in danger.
But even if she left Sunagakure, which place would dare to risk Sunagakure's wrath to take in a rogue-nin like her?
After much thought, the answer seemed to be only one.
"Night Star Uchiha... In the end, I have no choice but to find you..."
...
Three days later, on the border of the Land of Rain.
Orochimaru, wearing a bamboo hat, listened to the sound of raindrops hitting the ground and chuckled.
"The Land of Rain's environment is just as harsh as it was years ago."
As soon as he finished speaking, a beautiful woman wearing a black cloak with red clouds descended before him and Night Star, flapping her large paper wings.
"You're finally here."
Konan greeted them indifferently before turning her cold gaze toward Orochimaru.
"It's been a long time, Orochimaru of the Legendary Sannin."
"You are...?"
Seeing that Orochimaru didn't recognize her, Konan's voice grew colder.
"You don't remember the person you once tried to kill?"
Orochimaru laughed carelessly, yawning as he replied:
"Do you remember how many slices of bread you've eaten and what each one looked like?"
Konan didn't expect such an audacious response and was momentarily at a loss for words.
Orochimaru gave a playful smile and waved his hand.
"I was just joking. Of course, I remember you. After all, you're one of the three orphans of the Land of Rain, right?"
Konan glanced coldly at him but didn't respond further, shifting her gaze to Night Star beside him.
What she saw left her slightly stunned.
Night Star wasn't wearing a bamboo hat like Orochimaru, yet not a single raindrop had touched him.
The rain seemed to encounter an invisible barrier and slid away before reaching him.
"Is that... a chakra barrier?"
Konan understood how Night Star managed this, but the difficulty of such precision astounded her.
Maintaining a chakra barrier on the body while moving, and doing so effortlessly this level of control was beyond her.
At that moment, a man with the same black cloak, orange hair, and black piercings descended in front of Night Star and Orochimaru.
Seeing his purple Rinnegan, Orochimaru was momentarily stunned, his eyes quickly filling with unconcealed greed.
"So this is the Six Paths Sage's eyes? How truly astonishing."
