Chapter 30:
Chapter 30:
Jiang Feng began playing the recording.
After a brief crackle of static, Jiang Jiandang’s voice came through loud and clear. “Hello, are you a lawyer specializing in marriage cases?”
“Yes, that’s me. What kind of case are you looking to file this time?”
“I want to ask about my wife’s divorce. She’s the one repaying the mortgage over the past few decades. Under what circumstances can I get divorced without having to pay off the rest of the mortgage?”
Jiang Jiandang’s voice was unmistakable, and the meaning behind his words left everyone in shock.
It was the fastest turn of events anyone had ever seen.
Just moments ago, he had claimed he wanted to reconcile with his wife, and now, the recording revealed he was consulting a lawyer about how to avoid repaying the mortgage in a divorce.
The audience felt deceived.
It’s not unusual for people to strategize during divorces, looking for ways to secure property or leave the other party in a weaker financial position. But this was different.
The person on the recording wasn’t just anyone. This was Jiang Jiandang, a man who had been praised just days earlier by netizens as a “rare, kind-hearted man of the century.” A man like him trying to ensure his wife left the marriage without anything?
What kind of person was this?
Instantly, the audience felt betrayed.
Even though Jiang Feng had a bad temper and was often angry at his father, he had always stood by his mother. Could they trust Jiang Feng’s judgment now?
The recording continued to play.
The lawyer’s voice sounded surprised. “Mr. Jiang, if the house is in both your names and your wife has been paying the mortgage, it’s difficult to recover any money you spent before. But if you want to keep the house after the divorce, you’ll need to compensate Ms. Song for her share of the mortgage. To avoid that, unless your wife is at fault for the breakdown of the marriage, there’s not much you can do.”
The crowd murmured in unease.
Could this be why there had been online rumors about Song Lin’s infidelity? Was it all a ploy?
Even those who had supported Jiang Jiandang were now quiet.
“If you can prove that Ms. Song is responsible for the failure of the marriage, such as by having an affair, the court may require her to compensate you instead,” the lawyer continued. “In such cases, the financial burden on you could be reduced.”
“And what kind of fault in the marriage are we talking about?” Jiang Jiandang asked.
“Infidelity, for example,” the lawyer responded.
The recording ended.
Jiang Jiandang’s face was pale, and his expression was strained. “That was just a consultation! Xiao Lin had been talking about divorce, asking me to repay the mortgage for 200,000 yuan. I had never heard of having to repay a mortgage in a divorce, so I just—”
Jiang Feng cut him off. “So you were planning to accuse my mother of cheating, hoping that in the divorce you wouldn’t have to pay as much?”
“No!” Jiang Jiandang protested.
“Dad, stop lying. If that wasn’t your intention, why did you consult a lawyer?”
Panicking, Jiang Jiandang said, “You don’t understand! I just asked out of curiosity! I didn’t want to divorce your mother! It’s just that she kept demanding I repay the mortgage, so I went to ask a lawyer. And honestly, it’s your fault! You must have filled your mother’s head with nonsense, which is why I even had to ask!”
He was growing desperate, glaring at Jiang Feng as if he wanted to tear him apart. This kid had become more difficult as he grew older! Jiang Jiandang began to doubt whether it had been a good idea for He Minglang to bring Jiang Feng onto the show in the first place.
Seeing the situation deteriorate, He Minglang quickly jumped in, trying to calm things down.
“Brother Xiao Feng, you misunderstood Uncle Jiang. He never thought about divorcing Aunt Song. When Aunt brought up terms like the mortgage, Uncle was just trying to understand what was going on. He just wanted to make sure Aunt wouldn’t go through with the divorce. You see what I’m saying, right?”
He Minglang then turned to the audience, adding, “Our whole orphanage envies you, Xiao Feng, for having such a good father. Uncle Jiang may not be as hands-on with household matters as Aunt Song, but trust me, we all know how much he loves you. He talks about you and Aunt all the time, telling us how much you mean to him. You’ve really got it wrong.”
“Is that so?” Jiang Feng asked calmly.
“Yes.” He Minglang affirmed.
“So, you’re saying my dad only went to the lawyer to get information? That he didn’t want a divorce and wasn’t trying to frame my mother for infidelity just to save some money?”
Both Jiang Jiandang and He Minglang quickly denied it. “Absolutely not!” they said in unison.
“Really?” Jiang Feng suddenly broke into a smile.
The smile was sharp and clear, his dark eyes as deep as the ocean. At this moment, a chill ran down the spines of both Jiang Jiandang and He Minglang.
