I smirked. "I hope that knocked some sense into you. I set my last card and end my turn."
The atmosphere suddenly shifted. My chill went down my spine as I watched Yuma calmly stand up from the ground.
He lifted his eyes.
"You!"
His eyes were dark, full of rage.
"I am going to end you!" He stated. His voice was low, but there was something off about it.
Something that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Chapter 23: The Awakening!! Battle of Destiny Part 4!!
Flashback
The office was dimly lit, the only glow coming from the old brass lamp on the desk, casting flickering shadows against the tall bookshelves. The scent of worn leather, paper, and faint cigar smoke hung in the air, mixing with the distant patter of rain against the window. The chair behind the desk creaked as Kai's father leaned back, watching his son.
Kai stood in front of him, arms crossed, his lips pressed into a tight scowl. He wasn't a little kid anymore, but he still felt small under his father's gaze.
"It's not fair," Kai muttered. "He took all the Blue-Eyes cards! And he left me with—this."
He flicked a Red-Eyes Black Dragon card onto the desk. It landed face-up, the dragon's crimson eyes seeming to glare back at him.
Kai's father glanced down at the card, then back up at his son. "So?"
Kai frowned. "So? Red-Eyes is weak. It's not as strong, and it's not fair."
His father let out a deep chuckle, low and rumbling. "You think strength is all that matters?"
Kai hesitated, but his frustration burned hotter. "Yeah. In a duel, if your monster is stronger, you win."
His father leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. The shadows under his eyes made him look tired, but his gaze was still sharp. "Is that what your brother told you?"
Kai clenched his jaw but didn't answer.
His father exhaled through his nose, then picked up the Red-Eyes Black Dragon card, holding it between his fingers. He turned it over, studying it as if seeing it for the first time.
"Blue-Eyes represents power. Absolute, undeniable power. It is the dragon of kings, of those who are born strong, who crush anything in their way." He paused, tapping the card lightly against his fingertips. "But Red-Eyes?"
Kai shifted his weight, eyes narrowing. "What about it?"
His father's voice softened, but there was something heavy in his tone. "Red-Eyes is potential."
Kai blinked. "Potential?"
His father nodded. "Blue-Eyes starts at its peak. It's strong the moment it's summoned, and it never has to change. It's for those who believe strength is given, not earned." He set the Red-Eyes card back down in front of Kai. "But Red-Eyes is different. It has to fight. It has to struggle. It has to grow stronger."
Kai hesitated, staring at the dragon on the card.
His father leaned back slightly. "I once knew a man."
Kai looked up.
"A duelist," his father continued, his voice quieter now. "He wasn't the strongest. Wasn't the most skilled. But he wielded a Red-Eyes Black Dragon, just like you do now."
Kai's fingers twitched slightly. "What happened to him?"
His father smirked, but there was something sad in his eyes. "He faced a god."
Kai stiffened.
"A Duel Monster so powerful that its name alone made people tremble. He knew he couldn't win. He knew his Red-Eyes or any of his monsters weren't strong enough." His father let the words settle before continuing. "But he fought anyway."
Kai swallowed. "Did he win?"
His father's smirk faded slightly. "No."
Kai felt his stomach sink. "...Oh."
His father tapped the desk lightly. "But do you know what happened after?"
Kai shook his head.
His father's gaze darkened, his voice growing lower. "He was on the brink of winning, however, he lost consciousness. One attack. One attack was all he needed to win."
Kai frowned. "Huh?"
"This duelist was a man who never gave up. Despite being as weak as he was, he never ran from his opponents when it came to his friends. As a result of that, he grew in strength and skill and eventually became the duelist everyone came to respect. That god would have lost that day, and even though that man didn't win, he learnt a very important lesson. The potential in which he had to become great."
Kai felt his heart thudding against his ribs.
"The duelist lost. But that didn't mean he was weak." His father's voice was calm, steady, and firm. "It meant he still had room to grow. That his Red-Eyes still had more to become."
Kai looked down at the card in his hands again.
Red-Eyes wasn't weaker. It was unfinished.
His father exhaled, sitting back in his chair. "Strength is impressive, Kai. But do you know what's even more dangerous?"
Kai swallowed. "What?"
His father smiled as he looked onwards. "Someone who refuses to stop getting stronger for the sake of his friends."
Kai's fingers curled around his Red-Eyes Black Dragon.
It wasn't a handout like Blue-Eyes. It wasn't a gifted powerhouse.
It was a challenge.
And for the first time… he was ready to take it.
"You think." His father looked at him again. "You think with this card, I'll become an even stronger duelist than him?"
"Then who? The man I was talking about.?"
Kai quickly shook his head.
"No, Zarc."
Flashback End
The battlefield trembled with tension. Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon hovered above the field, its radiant energy clashing against the remnants of Chaos Dyson Sphere's obliterated form. Despite the devastation, Yuma stood firm, his gaze locked onto me, burning with an intensity I hadn't seen before.
His fists clenched. "You!" he spat, venom dripping from his voice. "I am going to end you!"
I steadied myself, keeping my eyes on him. "Tch. You say that, but your field is empty, Yuma. What can you do now?"
He chuckled—low, dark, unsettling. "Oh, you'll see. My turn! Draw!"

The moment he pulled his card, a surge of energy erupted from his Duel Disk. A twisted aura of darkness swirled around him, crackling with raw, untamed power.
"First I summon another copy of Gagaga Magician."
Gagaga Magician LV8 (ATK 1500/DEF 1000)
"And then I once again use its effect to turn it into a level 8 monster. Then I use a spell card you must be familiar with, Monster Reborn!"
Gagaga Magician LV8 (ATK 1500/DEF 1000)
"I use it to summon the Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon u used to summon your xyz monster."
I looked in surprise as my card flew out of my graveyard. 'Why did he pick Galaxy-Eyes?'
Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon LV8 (ATK 3000/DEF 2500)
'He has two level 8 monsters again. Don't tell me he Is gonna-'
Kai's eyes burned with fury as his Duel Disk flared to life, the field around him surging with raw, untamed energy. His opponent flinched slightly at the intensity of his glare, but Kai didn't care.
He raised his arm, pointing directly at the thief before him.
"Allow me to teach you what happens when you steal my friend's monsters."
His words cut through the battlefield like a blade, carrying the weight of his anger. With a sharp motion, he thrust his hand forward.
"I overlay my Level 8 monsters to build the Overlay Network!"
The air trembled as the two dragons on his field roared, their bodies twisting into twin spirals of pure energy. A vortex of swirling blue and white light erupted before him, the ground cracking beneath the sheer force of its gravitational pull. The duel arena was bathed in an ethereal glow as the overlay network pulsed, demanding the arrival of a cosmic entity.
Yuma's s voice boomed with conviction.
"From the depths of the galaxy, where light and destruction are one—descend! The beast that eclipses all with its overwhelming might!"
He raised his arm high, and with a mighty swing, he slammed his card onto the Duel Disk.
"I Xyz Summon! Appear, Rank 8—Number 39 Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon!!"
Number 39: Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon Rank 8 (ATK 4000/DEF 3000)
A blinding pillar of light erupted from the vortex, piercing through the sky itself. The heavens above ripped open as an enormous dragon descended, its metallic body gleaming with untamed cosmic energy. Its wings spread wide, shimmering with the glow of distant stars, while its piercing blue eyes locked onto its target with unrelenting fury.
Three glowing Overlay Units circled its body like orbiting moons, each one crackling with unimaginable power. The weight of its presence alone made the air feel heavier, its very existence warping reality itself.
I looked in shock as I stared at the mighty dragon again.
"He summoned another number monster like it was nothing." I muttered 'How is he able to keep xyz summoning every turn without stopping? It's like he is always getting the right cards he needs every turn.' The irony hadn't dawned on me.
Yuma's eyes narrowed coldly as he took a step forward, the light from his Duel Disk casting deep shadows across his face. His presence was different now—more controlled, more dangerous.
"Do you think I am done?" His voice was calm as he took a deep breath.
I felt my breath catch as the energy in the air shifted, heavy and oppressive. My eyes flicked to the field—his Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon was still there, its glowing blue gaze locked onto me. But something was different. The way Yuma stood, the way he looked at me, that sudden bust of hate and anger was nowhere to be found.
"I can Xyz Summon further with Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon!!"
"What!?" My eyes widened.
A smirk tugged at Yuma's lips. "This duel is about to end, Kai."
He raised his arm, his Duel Disk sparking with power as the field around us darkened, the light from Prime Photon Dragon intensifying into a blinding vortex.
A deafening shockwave ripped through the arena as the Overlay Units surrounding Prime Photon Dragon shattered, bursting into spiraling streams of chaotic energy. The sky above us cracked like fragile glass, revealing a swirling void of infinite galaxies and blackened stars.
Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon let out a piercing roar, its body trembling as the darkness engulfed it, consuming its shining metallic form. Its wings stretched, growing more jagged, its Armor pulsing with chaotic red and purple energy. The once-brilliant blue glow of its eyes now burned with an unstable crimson flare.
Yuma thrust his card forward, his voice booming with absolute authority.
"Descend—the dragon that transcends the very laws of the cosmos! CHAOS XYZ EVOLUTION!!"
A colossal burst of light and darkness exploded outward, shaking the ground beneath me. And then—out of the blinding storm of cosmic fury—a new dragon emerged.
"Behold! Rank 8— Chaos Number 62: Neo Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon!!"
Number C62: Neo Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon Rank 8 (ATK 4000/DEF 3000)
A monstrous, celestial force now loomed over the battlefield. Its wings stretched infinitely, crackling with energy pulled from the very fabric of space. Its Armor was no longer the refined silver of its former self but a chaotic fusion of blackened steel and radiant cosmic flames. Three Chaos Overlay Units hovered around it, each burning like a dying star ready to collapse into oblivion.
Its crimson glare locked onto me, a silent promise of destruction.
Yuma let out a slow exhale, lifting his head slightly, his smirk returning. "This is your end, Kai."
"Tch so what, your monster isn't as strong as my dragon," I said confidently, but my expression betrayed my confidence.
"Hehe Hehe." Yuma laughed, his eyes staring at me as if zooming in on his prey. "You may think differently after gaining a little taste of its special ability. Since Neo Galaxy-Eyes has Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon it gains life points of all the ranks and levels attached to it times 100. The ranks and level currently equal to 24, times that by 100 and you got a deadly dragon!"
Number C62: Neo Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon Rank 8 (ATK 6400/DEF 3000)
"Uh oh," I said, staring at the monster like some kind of new pillar I couldn't overcome.
"Now Galaxy-eyes attack his Galaxy-eyes with Prime Stream Of Destruction!" An orange, galaxy-looking beam rocketed from its mouth, sending its way towards Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. The attack engulfed my monster making its way towards me.
"Not so fast, I activate the trap card Defence Draw. The damage I take from this battle goes down all the way to 0 and I draw a card." As I drew my card, a barrier appeared, protecting me from the blast. My dragon however couldn't be saved as it was completely annihilated.
I sighed though, seeing that I wasn't out yet. There is still a chance.
"Tch, I set one card face down then end my turn." Even though he hadn't succeeded in finishing the duel, he still had a smirk on his face.
"Very well, I draw," I said with my own smirk. This was getting fun.
Control Room
The chairwomen stared at the screen in awe and surprise. "This duel is amazing. They have been going at it for a while and neither one seems to be backing down."
Declan just sat there; his hands clasped together as he was analyzing the duel. These two were truly amazing duelists. He knew duelists were considered absolute pros who would even be able to last 3 rounds against them.
"Take a look, Riley," he said as his eyes turned to his younger sister. "These are true duelists in action. Right Shay?" He then turned towards his guest, Shay Obsidian.
However, the man wasn't paying attention to anyone but the screen. He was looking right at Yuma, shock evident on his face. The man couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"Is that. Is he smiling?" Asked Shay.
Declan raised an eyebrow. "Is that unusual?"
"Well, I have never seen Yuma smile in battle ever since the invasion of Duel Academy. Before all he could think about was dueling and when he did it was always with a smile that made everyone want to follow him. To Yuma, dueling for fun with his friends was the most important thing to him. However, it's been a long time since I've seen that Yuma." Shay looked carefully at the Smiling Yuma. His smile was so big now, mirroring Kai's. It was so contagious; Shay himself was smiling. Declan smiled. The chairwoman smiled. Everyone in the room was smiling.
"Right now. I can tell. He is having the time of his life."

Red-Eyes Black Dragon LV7 (ATK 2400/DEF 1200)
"I activate my Trap Card—Red-Eyes Spirit!"
A surge of dark flames erupted from my field as the face-down card flipped up, radiating an ominous crimson glow. The ground beneath me trembled as an all-too-familiar presence stirred within the abyss.
"With this, I can resurrect a dragon that never truly goes extinct! Return to me—Red-Eyes Black Dragon!"
Red-Eyes Black Dragon LV7 (ATK 2400/DEF 2000)
A pillar of black and red fire shot into the sky, splitting the battlefield with its intense heat. From within the inferno, two glowing crimson eyes pierced through the darkness. With a mighty roar, Red-Eyes Black Dragon emerged, its obsidian scales gleaming as it spread its wings wide, casting a shadow over the field.
But I wasn't done. I started running searching as I played.
I clenched my fist, feeling the pulse of raw power surging through my deck.
"Now, Red-Eyes, ascend beyond your limits! I tribute you to summon a darker force—one bathed in shadow and destruction!"
The flames around Red-Eyes Black Dragon flared once more, twisting into an uncontrollable storm of darkness. Its body contorted, its wings stretching larger, sharper, and its scales turning more jagged, pulsating with untamed energy. The very air grew heavy as an even more terrifying roar rippled through the battlefield.
I thrust my card forward, my voice unwavering.
"Come forth—Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon!!"
Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon LV9 (ATK 2400/DEF 2000)
With a final burst of black fire, the transformation was complete. A new dragon stood in its place—larger, fiercer, overflowing with darkness. Its blood-red eyes gleamed like twin infernos, its very presence commanding destruction.
With a leap, I then jumped forward doing a front flip as I acrobatically picked up the action card.
Looking at It, I smirked before meeting my opponent's gaze.
Surprisingly, Yuma didn't say anything. He just stared at me, waiting for me to continue.
'He is planning something. He could have summoned his Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon to summon one of his monsters from the graveyard. This one must be strong.'
I smirked as dark flames surged around my dragon, its body pulsing with newfound power.
"Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon's effect activates!" My voice rang across the field, unwavering. "For every Dragon in my Graveyard, he gains 300 ATK—and right now, I count nine."
The flames flared higher as the numbers etched into my Duel Disk's display climbed rapidly.
"That's an extra 2,700 ATK!"
Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon let out a thunderous roar, the shadows around it twisting violently. The air crackled as its power surged, its already fearsome presence growing even more overwhelming.
Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon LV9 (ATK 5100/DEF 2000)
"Now I activate the action spell Shackles of Fate. It nullifies your monster effects dropping it back down to 4000."
Number C62: Neo Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon Rank 8 (ATK 4000/DEF 3000)
Yuma's smirk vanished instantly. His eyes widened.
"…Oh damn." He muttered, voice barely above a whisper.
I crossed my arms, my smirk widening.
I thrust my arm forward, the heat from my dragon's surging flames washing over me. This was it.
"Now, I shall attack your Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon with—Infernal Hellfire!"
Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon reared back, its massive wings spreading as a vortex of black flames swirled around its body. The very air crackled and warped from the sheer intensity of the energy building in its jaws.
With a mighty roar, the dragon unleashed a colossal wave of pure hellfire, a swirling maelstrom of shadow and flame, streaking toward Yuma's monster like a falling meteor.
"Destroy his dragon!"
The firestorm tore through the battlefield, the force of the attack shaking the ground beneath us. I could already see the shock in Yuma's eyes as the flames rushed toward him—
But then—
"I activate my Trap Card—Xyz Revenge Shackle!" Yuma's voice rang out, cutting through the chaos.
A bright red light engulfed the monster before a bright red light appeared.
I gritted my teeth. "Tch—what now!?"
Yuma smirked, his confidence returning in full force.
"With this trap, I can send my dragon back to the extra deck to also summon a warrior back from the dead. Arise my soldier Number 39: Utopia!"
Number 39: Utopia Rank 4 (ATK 2500/DEF 2000)
The golden radiance exploded outward, splitting the storm of darkness as a massive, regal figure descended from the heavens. Twin swords of light materialized in its hands, their edges gleaming with a righteous power that shook the very air. The warrior's pure white armor shimmered, adorned with golden accents that glowed like the light of a dying star refusing to fade.
The ground beneath us trembled as the armored knight landed gracefully, crossing its twin blades before spreading its arms wide in a battle stance.
"Him again," I said, remembering the monster before me. "Then that means-"
"I activate its special ability, by detaching the one overlay unit it has, I get to negate your attack."
I sighed again. My attack was unsuccessful.
"Unfortunately, since Utopia has no more materials, it is sent back to the graveyard." Yuma's monster disappeared as he took the card. Looking at it he smiled. "Don't worry, I'll summon you back very soon."
I steadied myself as Yuma looked confidently towards me. "Get ready Kai, it's my turn. Draw!"

"I summon Gagaga Mancer."
Gagaga Mancer LV4 (ATK 100/DEF 100)
"And now, with her effect, I can revive a Gagaga monster from my Graveyard!" Yuma's voice rang with excitement as the symbols around Gagaga Mancer glowed even brighter, forming a magical circle beneath her feet.
The ground beneath us shook as the circle expanded, its radiant energy pulling at the shadows lurking within the Graveyard.
"Return once more—Gagaga Magician!"
Gagaga Magician LV4 (ATK 1500/DEF1000)
A pillar of pure mystical energy erupted from the ground as another figure rose from the depths, his purple cloak billowing as he materialized onto the battlefield. The familiar masked spellcaster lifted his hands, magic pulsating at his fingertips.
Yuma grinned, eyes shining with excitement as he took a step forward. "You already know what's coming next, don't you, Kai?"
I raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Let me guess, another Xyz monster?"
"Bingo!" He snapped his fingers and lifted his hand dramatically. "I overlay Gagaga Mancer and Gagaga Magician! With these two, I construct the Overlay Network!"
A golden vortex erupted beneath Yuma's field, swirling with energy as his two monsters transformed into orbs of light. The whole arena hummed with power, sparks flickering in the air.
Yuma thrust his card forward. "I Xyz Summon! Rise up—Number 39: Utopia Rising!"
Number 39: Utopia Rising Rank 4 (ATK 2500/DEF 2000)
From the glowing void, a majestic warrior in shining white armor descended, landing gracefully on the battlefield. His twin swords gleamed in the light, his presence radiating with renewed strength.
I nodded; arms crossed. "Not bad, but you're gonna need more than that."
Yuma smirked, placing a hand on his Duel Disk. "Oh, don't worry—I'm just getting started! Utopia Rising's effect activates! With it, I can bring back Utopia from the graveyard"
The battlefield flashed with golden light, waves of energy rippling outward. Suddenly, the very ground beneath us split open, and another pillar of radiance shot into the sky.
I watched as a familiar warrior rose from the light, his twin blades crossed in front of him. His stance, his presence—I knew exactly who it was.
Yuma pointed ahead, his voice full of confidence.
"Arise again my fallen warrior—Number 39: Utopia!"
Number 39: Utopia Rank 4 (ATK 2500/DEF 2000)
I smiled, shaking my head. "Back once again huh? You better be going all out on me."
Utopia landed on the field, his energy pulsating like a warrior who refused to stay down. There was something almost poetic about it—no matter how many times Utopia fell, Yuma always found a way to bring him back. My red eyes gazed upon the warrior, looking as excited as me.
"Don't worry—I'm not even done yet. I'm rebuilding the Overlay Network!" Yuma started running to the left as he said this, an action card in sight.
My eyes widened slightly. 'He's going for an action card.' Realising this I dashed after him.
Utopia shattered into streaks of pure energy, spiralling into the sky as the clouds above us split apart, revealing a massive storm of golden lightning.
The city landscape we had been Dueling in had long since been destroyed. All that stood left were ashes and rubble. While it served as a reminder for both Yuma and Shay of their home, neither of them paid attention to it. All they could think about was the exciting duel that was happening.
Yuma's voice rang out, booming with energy and excitement.
"Descend—the warrior of ultimate victory!"
"Rank 5—Number S39: Utopia the Lightning!!"
Number S39: Utopia the Lightning Rank 5 (ATK 2500/DEF 2000)
A colossal bolt of lightning crashed onto the field, sending a powerful shockwave across the arena. When the light faded, a new Utopia stood before me, taller, stronger, his armour sharper and radiating with pure electric power. His twin blades crackled with unstoppable energy like they were ready to end this duel in one swing.
Yuma grinned, the action card on the charred floor reaching closer and closer. "Now, Kai, let's see if your Red Eyes can handle this." He said as he looked behind me, ginning as I struggled to catch up.
"Huff, huff, remind me to stop using my Motorcycle everywhere I go and exercise," I grumbled as I collapsed to the floor, tired from the running.
"What are you doing Kai? Don't tell me you're out of juice. This duel ain't over yet because when I attack your monster, I can detach two materials to boost my utopia's attack by 5000."
I looked up from the floor, refusing to get up. "Big deal. My monster will still be stronger."
"Maybe, but that all depends on this Action card I pick up." Yuma leapt forward, rolling on the ground as he grabbed the card. Looking at it, he smiled. "And just like I thought, it's a good one." Yuma huffed, the adrenaline pumping through his body as his excitement grew.
"I attack your Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon with my Utopia the Lightning." I quickly got up as Yuma declared his attack. I braced myself, knowing Yuma had a plan. He wouldn't just attack recklessly to through the duel, right?
Utopia the Lightning took off the two giant swords on his back as it charged to slay the mighty dragon. Seeing this Red-Eyes Darkness dragon let out a torrent of fire as descended towards the monster. However, Utopia's charge didn't waver, trusting in his master, and heading headfirst towards the rampaging torrent of flames.
"I activate the action spell Weakening Gust, with it, your monster's life points go down by 500. And by detaching two overlay units, Utopia's attack goes up to 5000!"
Utopia entered the flames. Multiple blue slashes could be seen in the flames before it dispersed into nothingness, leaving the monster untouched and unharmed.

Electricity encased itself around the sword as it crackled to life. Utopia leapt forward towards Red-Eyes, who tried to defend himself by unleashing its claws towards it. However, it was too slow. With a swipe, the mighty dragon had been slain. A gust of electricity has been created from the impact, heading towards me.
"Aaaaaahh!!" I shouted as I was lifted from the floor.
Kai LP: 1000

"Looks to me like this duel is over. You have no cards in your hands, even if you manage to pull something and attack, Utopia's attack will only climb back up to 5000. Nothing you draw will help you." Yuya smirked. He had enjoyed this duel, but he had to remember that he was still dueling someone from the duel academy, and the raging flames around him, around his home were a burning reminder of everything they did. He couldn't let go. "Draw your last pathetic card so I can end this!"
I got up slowly, wincing as a dull ache ran through my body. My shirt was in tatters, half of it hanging loose from my shoulders. Dirt and sweat clung to my skin, and a thin stream of blood trailed down the side of my leg. I rolled my shoulders, shaking off the sting—nothing I couldn't handle.
I looked at Yuma. His smile still clinging to his face. He believed he had already won and honestly, I didn't blame him. 'I'm pretty sure I've already used most of my strongest monsters. There is not much I can draw to even have a chance. I need to summon something that can beat a monster with 5000 attack points.
I closed my eyes, my mind suddenly shifting to the last thing Yuma had said. 'Draw your last pathetic card!'
Flashback
The crowd erupted in thunderous cheers as the duel reached its climax. Sparks flew across the battlefield, the very air crackling with energy. This was a battle for the ages—two of the greatest duelists in history clashing in a legendary showdown. The King of Games versus the Dragon Master.
Only one monster stood on each side now, the final pieces in this high-stakes battle. On Yugi's field, his ultimate fusion stood tall—Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon, a fearsome blend of sorcery and dragon might, its crimson armor gleaming under the arena lights. Across from it, soaring with unshakable confidence, was Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, Kaiba's ultimate evolution of his signature beast.
Kaiba smirked, his icy blue eyes locked onto Yugi with unrelenting determination. "This duel is over!" he declared, throwing his hand forward. "Neo Blue-Eyes White Dragon, attack!"
The great dragon let out a thunderous roar, its three heads charging with blinding energy. In an instant, it unleashed a devastating triple-strike, beams of raw power colliding into Dragoon. The magician-dragon roared in defiance, but the force was too great. With an explosion of light, Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon shattered into nothingness.
Kaiba let out a triumphant laugh, his voice cutting through the fading echoes of the attack. He raised his hand, pointing directly at Yugi.
"Draw your last pathetic card, Yugi!" he sneered, his words laced with years of rivalry and absolute confidence in his victory.
Despite his dragon being obliterated in a blinding explosion, his grin never wavered. The smoke and embers swirled around him, yet he stood firm, unwavering. His heart pounded—not with fear, but with certainty.
Then, as the battlefield fell silent and all eyes locked onto him, he spoke. And in that moment, the words he uttered became more than just a declaration—they became the very creed that would drive me forward through every battle, every impossible challenge that lay ahead.
A declaration that seemed to defy fate itself.
Flashback End
I snapped my eyes open as Yugi's words started ringing in my mind, putting my hands on my deck.
'My deck has no pathetic cards, Kaiba!'
"My deck has no pathetic cards, Yuma!"
I smirked as Yuma just stared at me in shock.
"I Draw!!"
As I drew my card, a brilliant white flash erupted from it, engulfing everything around me. The battlefield, the crowd, even my opponent—everything vanished into the blinding light.
I blinked, disoriented, my vision struggling to adjust. The roar of the duel was gone, replaced by an eerie silence.
"What… happened?" I muttered, my voice echoing in the emptiness.
I glanced down, and a cold realization settled over me—my duel disk was gone. My entire deck had vanished, leaving only a single card clutched between my fingers. The very card I had just drawn.
Frowning, I examined it closer. It was unmistakably an Effect Monster card, yet… it was blank. No artwork, no name, no effect text. Nothing to explain why it was in my deck or what it was meant to do.
But something about it held my attention—something different.
At the edges of the card, faint markings stood out against the emptiness. Arrows. Just like the ones on Yuya's Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon.
"A pendulum card?"
"That's right." Came an unknown deep voice around me. My eyes widened in surprise as I quickly turned around, however, what greeted me was far more shocking.
Standing before me was a towering figure, its form wrapped in jagged black armour, as if the void itself had been given shape. The plating looked organic, shifting subtly with every motion, like a living exoskeleton forged for war. Its sheer presence sent a chill through my body, a force that felt neither alive nor dead, but something beyond both.
Its wings unfurled with an eerie grace—massive, draconic things that loomed over me like the shadow of judgment. But what struck me most was the glow. The inside of its wings blazed with gold, a haunting radiance that pulsed and flickered like an eternal fire caged within darkness. It wasn't light in the way the sun shined—it was something deeper, something more primal. Like the last glimmer before the end of all things.
Then its head tilted slightly, and two slits of molten gold locked onto me.
The weight of its gaze made my instincts scream, but my body wouldn't move. It had no mouth, no expression, but I could feel something—an intent, a presence that crushed the air around it. This wasn't just some beast. It was a dragon more incredible than anything I've seen.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"My name is Tenebus, and I am your loyal servant." He said. His voice was raw, holding incredible power.
"My servant?" I asked confused. This was all confusing. One second, I was in a clash against one of the strongest opponents I have ever faced, and the next, I was standing in front of some dragon-looking creature, who was telling me he was my servant. "Just what are you, and what am I doing here?"
"You ask what I am?" His massive, blackened wings shifted, the golden glow within them flickering like dying embers. "I am one of the Dragon Kings, born from your courage and potential. Ruler of the in-between, the force that keeps balance between life and death. And you—" he took a step forward, the ground beneath him cracking slightly "—are my master."
"You stand here because you have reached the point where our paths were always meant to cross. I have waited for the one meant to command me, the one worthy of wielding my power." His wings flared slightly, the golden light casting shifting patterns against his dark armor. "You have awakened!"
"Awakened? What, what does that even mean!"
"I cannot say for certain," Tenebus rumbled, his golden eyes steady. "But the fact that you have drawn my card is proof enough—you are the one meant to wield my power."
I glanced down at the card in my hand, my grip tightening around it. "You mean this… Pendulum card?"
"Yes. Within that card lies the power you seek—the power to win this duel."
Before I could respond, my vision blurred. The blinding white around me twisted, swallowed by creeping darkness.
"Use my power. Call my name!"
His voice was the last thing I heard before everything went black.
"Kai!" My eyes suddenly snapped open. The first thing that caught my eye, was Yuma's pissed-off face.
"Finally!" Said Yuma, swinging his arms up in frustration. "I called you like ten times. For a second there, I thought you kicked the bucket."
I rubbed the back of my head in embarrassment. It must have appeared like I was staring into space, while I was talking to the dragon. I looked at my arm, sighing in relief at the sight of my duel disk along with my cards. I then looked at the card I drew. I widened my eyes.
It was the same card. Only this time the image of the dragon he had been talking to showed. 'So, all that was real? How did this even get into my deck?' I thought. I looked down sadly, there was no way I could summon it. It was a level 8, and I was pretty sure I needed two other cards to pendulum summon it. Not to mention the fact I didn't know how to pendulum summon. As I was about to give up hope, Yugi's words once again rang in my head.
'In the heat of battle, when everything is stacked against you when all logic says you should lose—that is when you must believe the most. If you can do that, Kai, then your deck will never fail you.'
'That's right!' I thought looking at the card in determination. "I don't know where this card came from but if my deck says it can help me, then I trust it completely." Suddenly a load of information entered my head. I smirked as I began my turn.
Turn 11
Kai
Hand: 1
LP: 1000
Yuma
Hand: 0
LP: 4000
My body started moving on autopilot, as if rehearsing a scene it had practised a hundred times. Showing the card to my opponent, I spoke. "I activate the pendulum ability of Tenebus from my hand!"
"Pendulum!" Yuma asked in confusion.
"Since this is the only card in my hand, I get to add two more pendulum cards from my deck!" I picked up my deck and shuffled through the few remaining cards I had, as if I had expected my deck to randomly pop up two cards, I knew I didn't have. However, sure enough, the very last two cards showed cards with the very arrows that signalled its pendulum status. Grabbing them, I smiled.
I slammed the two cards onto my Duel Disk, and in an instant, the space around me warped. Two glowing pillars of light shot into the sky, one golden and radiant, the other dark and ominous, forming an eerie yet majestic gateway.
"Alright! I activate the Pendulum Scales!" My voice rang with conviction as I gestured toward the two towering beacons. "With Scale 3, Elysium, Harbinger of Life, and Scale 9, Necrolyth, Harbinger of Death, the path between life and death is open!"
Yuma could only watch in shock as a swirling vortex formed between them, a fusion of blinding light and consuming darkness, twisting together like the strands of fate itself. The entire field trembled as an otherworldly force surged forth.
I thrust my arm forward, the energy crackling around me. "Now, I can summon monsters from Levels 4 through 8 all at the same time!"
Suddenly a huge pillar of white light burst from the whole created by the pendulum as I started my chant.
"From the veil that separates the living and the dead, the keeper of the threshold awakens!
Black wings that shield the dying, golden flames that sustain the lost—take heed as I call your name! Emerge and command the balance of this battle you are thrust upon!" Like a deity descending from the heavens, a figure began to emerge from the pillar of light, its form slowly rising into view. I raised my hand high and spoke before it could completely emerge. "I Pendulum Summon! Descend—Tenebus, the Dragon King of Sustenance!"
The pillar of white energy began to subside as the mighty dragon fully appeared in all its glory.
Tenebus, the Dragon King of Sustenance LV8 (ATK 3000/DEF 3000)
Yuma took a step back, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Did he just... Pendulum Summon?" he muttered, barely able to process what he had just witnessed.
The sheer force of the summoning still crackled in the air, sending ripples of energy across the field. The two glowing beacons—the Pendulum Scales—stood like immovable pillars, their power undeniable. And from their midst, a monster, unlike any Yuma, had ever seen, their black wings stretching wide, the golden flames flickering to life and back down, their hoods that covered their very faces, only showing white eyes that watched him like a hawk. They looked like deities.
Yuma swallowed hard. Pendulum Summoning… That was a move he had never even expected from Kai.
Sakaki house
Smash!
Another plate hit the floor, shattering into pieces, but Yoko barely noticed. Her hands were still frozen, her wide eyes locked onto the screen.
Yuya was on his feet, his breath unsteady. His mind raced, struggling to process what he had just seen. Did Kai just…?
"Did he? Did he just Pendulum Summon?!" Yuya's voice rang out, filled with disbelief.
Gong, arms crossed, didn't take his eyes off the screen. He swallowed hard before muttering, "I think so… Though Gong can't believe it."
Yoko's grip tightened on her apron, her heart pounding. Kai's summoning felt different from Yuya's—it carried a weight that sent shivers down her spine. The monster standing behind him, its black armor gleaming, golden light flickering from within… It was unlike anything they had ever seen.
Yuya clenched his fists. "But those monsters… they aren't mine. That's not Timegazer or Stargazer." His voice dropped, filled with unease. "Just what kind of Pendulum Summon was that…?"
Yoko slowly crouched to pick up the broken pieces of the plate, but her hands were still trembling. Even as she tried to focus, her eyes kept drifting back to the screen.
Kai stood there, his presence commanding, his monsters towering behind him. Their very existence seemed to shake the field, an overwhelming pressure radiating from them.
Yuya bit his lip, his mind racing. He used Pendulum Summoning… but it's nothing like mine. That energy… it's on a whole different level.
"No way…" Yuzu whispered, her grip tightening on the Duel Disk strapped to her arm. She had seen Yuya's Pendulum Summons countless times before and had even fought by his side, but this—this felt different. It wasn't just the summoning method. It was the sheer force behind it, the way the very field seemed to bend under Kai's power.
Gong let out a deep breath, arms still crossed tightly over his chest. "Gong don't know what to say. That technique… it ain't the same as yours, Yuya."
Yuya nodded absently. His heart was pounding, and not just from shock—it was something else. A feeling deep in his gut that told him this wasn't just another duel.
"Kai… just what kind of power are you using?"
Yuzu's gaze remained fixed on the screen, her expression unreadable. "Whatever it is… he didn't have it before. Still, this is just the kind of power he needs to win this duel!" Her words seem to lighten the mood. Everyone was excited to see how this would end the duel.
Control Room
The control room was deathly silent. Only the hum of monitors and the frantic beeping of energy scanners filled the space. Every eye was locked onto the screen, transfixed by the monstrous figures standing behind Kai.
The air in the room felt heavier as if the sheer presence of the creatures had reached through the screen itself.
"What… what did we just witness?" one of the technicians stammered, frantically typing into the console. The energy readings were unstable—fluctuating far beyond expected limits.
"This can't be right," another said in disbelief. "A Pendulum Summon shouldn't generate this kind of response!"
The Chairwoman leaned forward in her seat; eyes narrowed as she took in the sight before her. The towering, hooded figures loomed over the field, their black armor reflecting the glow of the Pendulum Scales. Their golden wings pulsed like dying embers, radiating an aura that sent chills through her spine.
"Pendulum Summoning…" she murmured, her grip tightening on the armrest.
Reiji Akaba remained still, watching intently. His expression didn't waver, but his mind was already working through the implications.
"It resembles Yuya Sakaki's summoning method," the Chairwoman continued, her voice sharp, yet laced with something bordering on disbelief. "But this... it's not the same."
Shay Obsidian's arms were crossed, but his eyes betrayed his shock. "Those monsters… they don't just feel strong. They feel like they belong there—like that field was built just for them."
On the screen, the Harbingers of Life and Death stood at Kai's sides, the swirling vortex between them still crackling with energy. But all attention was on the monster that had emerged from the blinding pillar of light—Tenebus, the Dragon King of Sustenance.
His molten golden eyes burned like twin suns, his blackened armor shifting like living shadows. With each slow, deliberate movement, his golden flames flickered, their light barely contained within his form.
One of the technicians gasped as a new surge of energy readings spiked. "President! The dimensional waves—they're reacting to that dragon specifically!"
Reiji's gaze flicked toward the data, then back at the screen.
"I don't know how he did it, but it seems Kai has not only learnt Pendulum summoning but has found a way to tap into an even greater power. I don't know exactly what it is, and I am not sure even Kai himself knows."
The room fell into a tense silence.
Shay clenched his fists as he studied the field. "This duel just changed."
The Chairwoman remained fixated on the image of Tenebus, her thoughts racing. "A power even beyond Declan and Yuya's Pendulum Summon…" she murmured. "Just where exactly is the limit of Kai's potential?"
No one had an answer.
All they could do was watch.
Arena
I dropped to the ground, releasing a breath I hadn't even realized I was holding. My heart pounded in my chest as I turned to look behind me, my eyes locking onto the monsters I had just summoned. My mind raced, struggling to process what had just happened.
Incredible… Did I just Pendulum Summon?
A wide grin spread across my face, excitement surging through me like wildfire. I can't believe it.
I glanced down at my Duel Disk, my gaze landing on the cards neatly placed within its zones. The reality of it all finally hit me. These weren't just any cards. They were mine. But where had they come from? And more importantly—how did I know everything about them?
Newfound knowledge flooded my mind, every effect, every ability as if I had been using these monsters my entire life. It didn't make sense, but right now, I didn't care. Because one thing was certain— This match was over.
Looking past the still-shocked Yuma, I called out, "It's time to end this duel."
My words seemed to snap him out of his daze. His eyes widened for a moment before narrowing with determination. Without hesitation, he took off running, scanning the field for an Action Card.
He still didn't know what I had just done or what kind of monsters I had summoned. But one thing was clear—the wide grin on my face, the confidence radiating from me…
Kai wasn't just planning to win this duel.
He knew he was going to.
"I attack your monster with my Tenebus, the Dragon King of Sustenance! Go and destroy."
With my command, Tenebus shot forward, streaking toward Utopia at blinding speed, his golden flames flaring wildly.
"Idiot, you forget that when you attack, my monster's attack points rise to 5000!!"
Number S39: Utopia the Lightning Rank 5 (ATK 5000/DEF 2000)
Acting quickly, I thrust my arm forward. "Actually, no I didn't, when Tenebus declares an attack, I can summon one Red-Eyes monster from my Graveyard—then destroy your monster! I revive Red-Eyes Fullmetal Dragon!"
A deep, guttural roar tore through the battlefield as a swirling void ripped open beneath Tenebus. From within, a monstrous figure emerged—Red-Eyes Fullmetal Dragon, its metallic body gleaming under the duel's energy.
Red-Eyes Black Fullmetal Dragon LV8 (ATK 3400/DEF 2400)
Before Yuma could react, the void expanded with a terrifying pull. Like a helpless child caught in a raging storm, Utopia the Lightning was dragged in, its form distorting as it was swallowed whole.
The field shook as the gateway slammed shut, leaving only my dragons standing.
"Also let's not forget to mention, Tenebus gains that destroyed Monsters attack points!"
Tenebus, the Dragon King of Sustenance LV8 (ATK 5500/DEF 3000)
Yuma didn't pay attention as he grabbed the action in sight. "I activate the action spell-"
"I activate Fullmetal Dragons' ability to negate that attack and just for fun, I activate Necrolyths effect to banish the monster that was just destroyed to deal you 500 points of damage."
Necrolyth, the Harbinger of Death, shifted slightly. From beneath its tattered cloak, golden embers flared, coiling into its skeletal hands like dying stars. The temperature in the arena seemed to plummet as the being slowly raised one hand
Then, with a slow, deliberate motion, Necrolyth clenched its fist.
A deep, otherworldly boom echoed across the battlefield as Utopia's remains were completely erased, sucked into the abyss. A shockwave of dark energy erupted outward, racing toward Yuma like a vengeful spirit.
Yuma LP:3500
Yuma clenched his gut at the sting of whatever that attack was.
I pointed forward, my voice unwavering. "Don't forget, Tenebus is still on its charge for blood. Destroy with Eclipse Judgement!"
Tenebus's golden eyes flared, its massive wings unfurling as darkness and radiance swirled together in a violent storm. The flames within its wings pulsed wildly, shifting between blinding gold and consuming black as if the forces of life and death themselves were colliding.
Then, with a mighty roar, Tenebus shot forward, the battlefield trembling under the sheer force of its movement. All that energy surged into his right arm, encasing itself around him as the dragon punched Yuma sending him flying through multiple walls.
Yuma LP: 0
Everywhere was dead silent. The control room, the Sakaki house, the arena—everything had just stopped. No one moved, no one spoke. It was like the whole world was struggling to catch up with what had just happened.
The battle—the absolute clash of monsters—was over.
And the winner… was Kai.
The realization hit like a shockwave, sinking into everyone's minds. Then, all at once—
The entire place erupted.
Gong, Yuya, Yuzu, and Yoko practically tackled each other, jumping around like maniacs, tears streaming down their faces.
"Kai did it! He really did it!" they screamed, their voices overlapping as they held onto each other, shaking with pure excitement.
Meanwhile, the control room had straight-up lost it. Papers were flying everywhere, technicians were cheering, high-fiving, hugging—hell, some were even dancing. It was absolute chaos, but the good kind. The kind that only happened when you'd just watched something legendary.
Declan let out a deep sigh, shaking his head, though even he couldn't hide the small smile on his face. He turned to the Chairwoman—only to immediately regret it.
She had a huge smirk plastered across her face, her fingers tapping together as she stared at the screen. Declan sweatdropped.
Oh great… I can already see the schemes forming in her head.
Yup. Kai had just won, but knowing his mother? This was just the beginning.
Shay had already left, leaving as soon as the last attack had hit. He rushed to the arena, desperate to know if his friend was ok.
Back in the arena, the dust had settled.
I stood over Yuma, who was flat on his back, staring up at the sky. Both of us were a mess—bruises covered our arms, our shirts were torn, and our jackets had long since been lost in the chaos of the duel. Yet, despite all of it, they were smiling.
A deep, tired chuckle escaped Yuma as he stared at the ceiling. "Damn, Kai… you really don't hold back, huh?"
i let out a breath, running a hand through my messy hair. "Tch. Like you were any better. You had me on the ropes more times than I wanna admit."
Yuma laughed, pushing himself up onto his elbows, wincing slightly. "Heh, guess I did, huh?" He turned to look at me, his expression softer than before. The fiery rage that had consumed him during the duel was gone—replaced by something else. Something lighter.
For the first time in a long time, Yuma wasn't scowling at his opponent. He wasn't looking at them like they were pure filth he had to destroy. Instead, there was respect.
I had noticed it too. I crossed his arms, tilting my head slightly. "What? No death glares? No yelling about how I am fusion scum and how you're gonna end me?"
Yuma smirked, shaking his head. "Nah. You already beat me."
I blinked. I wasn't expecting that.
"Besides," Yuma continued, stretching out his sore limbs, "that was fun."
I raised an eyebrow. "Fun?"
Yuma grinned, rubbing the back of his head. "Yeah. It's been… a long time since I actually enjoyed dueling like that. No anger, no revenge. Just me and my opponent, giving it everything we've got." He exhaled, staring at his empty Duel Disk. "I almost forgot what that felt like."
I watched him for a moment, then scoffed. "Took you long enough," I smirked as I held out my hand. "C'mon, get up."
Yuma blinked, looking at the hand before grinning and clasping it firmly. I pulled him up, and for a second, we just stood there—two duelists who had pushed each other to their limits, acknowledging the fight they just had.
Yuma smirked. "Next time, I'm gonna win,"
I smirked right back. "Tch. We'll see about that."
Then from the hall, Shay appeared. "Yuma!" he shouted.
"Hey sha-"
Thud! Thud!
Both Yuma and I had collapsed together, from exhaustion, smiles still etched on our faces. Shay didn't seem to share our happiness as he screamed our names. Rushing towards us with worry.
"Hey, Declan! I know you can hear me! Get some help quick!" Shay shouted.
Declan grumbled from the overreaction the man was helping. "Go bring them to the medical centre!" he ordered.
"Yes Sir!"
Next Morning
My eyes fluttered open.
For a moment, everything was blurry, my body heavy, like I had just run a marathon. My mind was sluggish, struggling to piece together where I was. The ceiling above me… familiar. The scent of my room, the soft blankets wrapped around me—
'Wait… my room?'
I shot up abruptly, my heart pounding. "What the hell?"
The last thing I remembered was defeating Yuma—standing in the arena, completely exhausted, barely able to stay on my feet. But now? I was here, dressed in fresh clothes, the lingering soreness in my body the only proof that the duel hadn't just been some wild dream.
"How… did I get here?" I muttered, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. The duel had taken everything out of me, but somehow, I had ended up here, safe and sound.
Still groggy, I pushed myself to my feet and stumbled toward the door. My body ached, but in a good way—the kind of ache that reminded me I had given it my all.
As I made my way downstairs, I wasn't expecting much. Maybe a quiet morning, maybe some time to finally process everything that had happened.
What I wasn't expecting—
"CONGRATULATIONS, KAI!"
I nearly jumped out of my skin as I hit the last step.
Standing in the living room, grinning from ear to ear, were Yuya, Yuzu, Yoko, Gong, and even Shuzo. They all looked beyond excited, like they had been waiting for this moment. Yuya was front and center, fists clenched like he was about to explode from excitement. Yoko had her hands clasped together like a proud mother, and even Shuzo—who usually wasn't this loud—was beaming.
"About time you woke up!" Yuya laughed, stepping forward. "We were starting to think you'd sleep through the whole day!"
I blinked, still trying to catch up. My gaze flicked between each of them before landing on the TV, where the screen was paused on the exact moment I had won the duel against Yuma.
"You… you guys saw that?"
"Every second," Yuzu said, arms crossed, though her smile softened the gesture.
Gong let out a hearty chuckle. "And what a duel it was! Gong is beyond impressed!"
"You were amazing, Kai!" Yoko chimed in, stepping closer. "You fought so hard, and that Pendulum Summon—incredible!"
I stared at them, taking in their genuine joy.
And just like that, it hit me.
For so long, I had been fighting alone, pushing myself forward with nothing but my own drive to get stronger. But now? Now, I had people behind me.
People who watched. People who cheered. People who believed in me.
Warmth spread through my chest, and despite myself, a small smile crept onto my face.
"Yeah," I murmured, rubbing the back of my head. "It was something, huh?"
Yuya grinned and threw an arm around my shoulder. "Something?! That was one of the best duels I've ever seen! You and Yuma went all out!"
Yuzu nodded. "And you looked like you were having fun too."
I paused.
I thought about it—about that moment when Yuma and I were both smiling after the duel had ended.
I chuckled. "Yeah… I guess I was."
Right on cue, my stomach growled, completely ruining the moment.
Yoko clapped her hands together. "Well, I had a feeling you'd be starving after a duel like that, so I made a feast!"
My eyes widened as I followed her into the kitchen. The table was covered with plates of food—rice, miso soup, grilled fish, tamagoyaki, pancakes, and even a stack of onigiri.
Yuya whistled. "Mom really went all out, huh?"
Yoko beamed and swung an arm around my shoulders. "Of course! My son just won an incredible duel! That deserves a celebration!"
I smirked. "Son, huh? I could get used to that."
Yuzu grabbed my wrist, pulling me toward the table. "Come on, Kai, we can't let the food Mrs. Sakaki made go to waste."
Yuya and Gong followed closely behind, all of us ready to dig in.
I had barely picked up my chopsticks when—
BANG!
The front door slammed open, making me nearly choke on air.
"WHERE IS HE?!"
I blinked as Shuzo stormed into the room, dramatic as ever, arms flailing wildly. Behind him, Tate, Allie, and Fredrick rushed in, barely keeping up.
Shuzo pointed right at me, eyes burning with emotion.
"You! You absolute madman!"
I raised an eyebrow. "Huh?"
Shuzo marched right up to me, practically shaking with excitement. "You—YOU JUST WON THE DUEL OF A LIFETIME!"
I blinked again. "Wait… how do you—?"
"Your mother!" Shuzo spun dramatically, gesturing to Yoko, who was still setting more food on the table. "She told me everything!"
Tate, Allie, and Fredrick nodded aggressively, still catching their breath.
"She said you beat some super-strong duelist in some crazy duel!" Tate said, eyes wide.
"Yeah! And that you pulled off Pendulum Summoning!" Allie added, practically bouncing in place.
Fredrick tilted his head. "Uh… what was his name again?"
"Yuma," Yoko supplied with a smile.
Fredrick snapped his fingers. "Right! Some guy named Yuma!" He turned back to me. "Who is that, by the way?"
I hesitated for a second before smirking. "Someone I'll probably duel again."
Shuzo threw his hands in the air. "And he's being humble about it! Like it's just another Tuesday!" He grabbed my shoulders, shaking me slightly. "You, my boy, are a champion! A warrior! A true legend in the making!"
I chuckled, prying his hands off. "Alright, alright, calm down before you pass out."
"Calm down?! CALM DOWN?!" Shuzo clutched his chest like I had personally offended his soul. "I refuse to calm down when my future son-in-law is making history—"
CRASH.
A ladle flew past his head, barely missing.
Yuzu turned away with dangerous calmness. "Oops, my hand slipped," she said sweetly.
I grinned, shaking my head.
Yuya laughed, patting my back. "Dude, you should've seen the duel from our perspective. It was insane."
Yoko beamed. "I had no doubt you'd win. That's why I made sure to cook enough for a feast!"
Shuzo wiped a fake tear from his eye. "And what a glorious feast it is! Truly worthy of a duelist of your caliber!"
I smirked. "Then let's eat before it gets cold."
We all gathered around the table, laughter filling the air.
For the first time in a long time…
I wasn't just a duelist standing alone.
I was home.
And honestly?
That felt better than winning any duel.
Flashback
Kai quickly shook his head.
"No, Zarc."
"Ooooh, you mean that cute little friend you made?" his father said with a chuckle, clearly pleased that his son was making friends. "Yeah, of course you can."
Little Kai's eyes widened, shining like a pair of Red-Eyes reflecting firelight. "Really?! You mean it?!" His small hands gripped the edge of the table, his whole body practically buzzing with excitement.
His father smiled. That unshakable energy, that burning drive in Kai's eyes—it was always there. Even at this age, he had a spark, an untamed fire that refused to go out. It reminded him of something.
His gaze flickered to the card Kai never let go of—his Red-Eyes Black Dragon.
Other kids might have seen it as just another card, but Kai? He clung to it like it was a promise. And in a way, it was. Unlike Blue-Eyes, Red-Eyes wasn't born powerful—it had to fight, to struggle, to grow. Just like Kai himself.
"Of course," his father said, ruffling his hair. "Just be careful, alright?"
But Kai was already off like a rocket, bolting toward the door with no intention of slowing down. "I gotta tell him! I gotta tell him right now!"
"Kai, your shoes—!"
THUD.
He barely made it two steps before his own momentum betrayed him, his foot catching on the wooden floor. He tumbled forward, hitting the ground with a startled 'oof!'
For a second, there was silence. Then, slowly, Kai peeked up, his cheeks slightly flushed as he flashed his dad a toothy grin. "I'm okay!"
His father let out a sigh—half amused, half exasperated. "You really are something else, kid."
But as he watched Kai scramble back to his feet, his excitement completely unfazed, he knew—
That boy was going to go far.
Maybe even farther than anyone could imagine.
Because just like his Red-Eyes, Kai's potential had no limits.
