Chapter 560: 560. The Three Mothers!
The suddenly appearing black umbrella seemed unremarkable, but it blocked all the incoming lasers.
A dark green flame passed over the surface of the umbrella, leaving no trace at all.
Everyone below saw this scene, and the three strange beings simultaneously turned their gaze to the sky, their expressions fluctuating between cloudy and clear.
As hunters of magical dimensions, no one was more attuned to the energy responses of this world than they were. But for some reason, the black umbrella that appeared suddenly emitted an energy they had never felt before.
In contrast, when Shazam saw the familiar black umbrella, he let out a deep sigh, his tense heart finally relaxing.
"Mr. Alex," he called out, relieved.
Behind the black umbrella, Franklin and Valeria, who had narrowly escaped danger, looked at Alex, grateful for his timely arrival.
"Mm." Alex tucked the black umbrella away, nodding slightly. "Are you two okay?"
"We're fine, but they're too strange. They are the ones who destroyed Asgard and the surrounding magical dimensions, and they have set up devices here to sense magic and divine power," Valeria said quickly.
"I understand." Alex responded, having already sensed their presence the moment Billy first called out "Shazam." At first, he thought the kids were in danger, so he rushed over.
If not for the unstable state of the ruined divine domain, Alex would have arrived much earlier, but it seemed he hadn't come too late.
"Be careful, Mr. Alex. They're not ordinary beings. Even the energy detector in my device can't calculate their energy source," Valeria warned.
Hearing Valeria's words, Alex nodded slightly and then turned to look down at the three strange humanoid creatures. His expression grew darker.
"I should have realized it earlier. The Wyrd, the Crawling, and the Crown, the hounds of the Peregrine Child, the legendary Three Mothers. I thought you lot were extinct in the wasteland. Now I see I underestimated this universe."
Alex's impression of the Three Mothers came from the comic 'The Death of Doctor Strange.'
No wonder so many magical dimensions had been devoured. Even the weakened Odin had died at their hands, for the Three Mothers were not weaker than the dimensional lords they battled.
The Three Mothers hailed from a place farther away than any known dimension, an unknown region beyond human reach, even for dimension lords and supreme mages.
They were among the first dimensional rulers destroyed by the Peregrine Child. Since then, their souls had been enslaved by the Peregrine Child, tasked with helping them find suitable magical dimensions to devour.
They had slaughtered countless magical dimensions, leaving pure destruction in their wake. To satisfy the "children's" hunger, they focused on destroying any dimension filled with magical energy.
No monarch or warrior could contend with their overwhelming power. Countless dimensions fell and became ruins at their hands. Even Asgard had now been overwhelmed.
Alex glanced at Shazam below and saw that he had only sustained minor injuries. He was slightly reassured.
It didn't surprise Alex that Shazam was injured by the Crown's heavy sword. In the comics, the Crown had easily defeated Thor, knocking him to the ground after just a few exchanges.
The creature even threatened to decapitate Thor and give his head to the children as a toy.
In addition to that, the Three Mothers had a remarkable battle record. Not only did they crush Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Thor during their first appearance, but even later, when Doctor Strange gathered the Avengers and X-Men, they couldn't defeat them.
It should be noted that those fighting weren't just any ordinary superheroes. Even the Avengers and X-Men's core team members participated, with Jean Grey herself joining the fray, but still, the Three Mothers overpowered them.
Eventually, it was only through the combined power of five supreme mages from different dimensions, along with Earth's greatest mages like Doctor Doom and Voodoo, that the Three Mothers and the Peregrine Child were driven out.
This demonstrated that even one of the Three Mothers was stronger than an average dimensional lord. Even Odin at his peak couldn't be sure of defeating them, not to mention there was still an Outcast present.
"The hounds of the Peregrine Child... Mr. Alex, do you know their true identity?" Franklin furrowed his brow. It was the first time he had heard that name.
"I have some... knowledge," Alex replied, observing the Three Mothers below. They, too, were watching him, and neither side seemed ready to strike just yet.
Seeing this, Alex didn't mind explaining more about their enemies to Franklin.
"No one knows how the Peregrine Child came to be. There are legends about them in ancient magical dimensions. Some speculate they are not actually a living being but a product from a higher-dimensional space—an N-dimensional food processor."
"A food processor? What kind of food?" Valeria furrowed his brow in confusion.
"Magic is their food. They are at the very top of the magical food chain, an insatiable magic devourer, always hungry. And what they feast on most are magical creatures from various dimensions..."
After a brief pause, Alex smirked and coldly sneered at the Three Mothers below.
"I wasn't wrong, was I? The Three Mothers!"
"Hmph... Unknown wizard, you seem to know our children quite well," came the response.
The Crown pulled out a wicked smile as it drew its heavy sword from the frozen ground.
"How about it? Want to join our family? No one can resist a mother's love for her child, of course, fatherly love works too."
The magical energy was shielded by the timepad, so they couldn't detect where Alex's magic was coming from and hesitated to act rashly.
Alex squinted his eyes. He hadn't expected these three to have some intelligence. They weren't the type to charge in blindly without thinking.
"Heh, I'm not interested in raising a monster as a child," Alex said, simultaneously using telepathy to contact Billy, Franklin, and Valeria.
"Billy, take the brother and sister back to the Hogwarts Express. Go now!"
"But—" Franklin widened his eyes, about to respond, but Alex stopped him with a glance.
"No buts. These three have set their sights on you, Franklin. Your body contains enough energy to create a universe. It absolutely cannot be consumed by the Peregrine Child, or the entire wasteland will be in danger."
Unlike divine power and magic, the energy Franklin carried in his body was a prime target for the Peregrine Child—like a delicacy to them.
If Franklin were fully grown, he wouldn't fear the Peregrine Child, but since he's not yet mastered these powers, staying would only cause more trouble and no benefit.
"What about you? We can't leave you here alone. Even Odin couldn't—"
Before Franklin could finish, Shazam had already made his move.
Shazam soared into the air, using his magical cloak to whisk Franklin and his siblings upwards, heading straight toward the direction of the train.
"Don't think you can leave!"
The Wyrd's four hands formed a magical gesture, and in the next moment, a laser made of pure magical energy shot toward the three of them.
Alex's figure flickered, meeting the laser instantly. Without any visible movement, a white shield appeared in front of him, blocking the laser completely.
At the same time, countless tendrils emerged from under his black cloak, stopping the Crown, which had tried to chase after Shazam and the others.
"I didn't permit you to leave," Alex spoke softly, standing in front of the Three Mothers.
"I was hoping to find some clues about the culprit behind the destruction of the magical dimensions. Since you've stepped forward, then you'll stay here."
"Although the energy response is strange, and something is hidden beneath the surface magic, in the end, you're just a human," the Crown said, slashing through one of the tendrils with its sword, the heavy blade pointing directly at Alex's head.
"Sisters, the prey is right here. Let's take him back for the children to enjoy. This will be the appetizer for the feast."
"Take me as the appetizer, huh?" Alex smirked.
Before he could finish speaking, the Crown's attack closed in. Alex suddenly drew out a sword from the black umbrella.
"Are you not afraid of your monster's teeth shattering?" Alex retorted.
The clash of blades created a burst of terrifying energy, sending spatial ripples that whipped up a violent hurricane around them.
If it were a regular weapon, it would have shattered from the collision, but the sword, infused with Alex's magical energy, was incredibly resilient, holding firm against the heavy sword and not allowing it to advance an inch.
"Your combat abilities are interesting. Come, let me taste them!" The Crown laughed wickedly and roared, raising the massive sword high and launching a frenzied attack at Alex.
Feeling the overwhelming force from the sword, Alex was momentarily surprised.
The level of strength behind this blow was on par with Darkseid's. If Alex hadn't made significant progress recently, just this one strike would have sent him flying backward.
Before Alex could react further, the heavy sword came crashing down once more.
Alex quickly raised his sword to block, and the blades collided, causing powerful tremors. Each time they crossed, the surrounding space shook slightly, and everything around them was torn apart.
Cling! Cling! Crash—!!
Two different magical energies exploded into brilliant fireworks with each clash.
Seeing the weak human before him finally nearing his limit, the Crown became even more frenzied. Leaping high into the air, the Crown aimed to strike down at Alex while he was momentarily stunned from the impact. However, what it didn't notice was that Alex's pupils had turned blood-red without anyone realizing.
