Chapter 10: Arriving to town
She returned to her normal self. On the way to the capital, she continued jumping every time she believed someone was in need.
Every time she went to save someone, she did it with a smile on her face, and was glad she could help.
Luckily, we did not find anything more dangerous.
"Cannot believe you went up that tree for that stray cat... I am out of bandages, you know?"
She got scratched and then fell. Luckily, she is fine now.
"Bandages mean I did a good job today!" She answers with both hands on her hips. "Although... I am hurting a little..."
I am impressed she is alive with that mindset.
But she is strong. She managed to parry that young dragon and not die after a hit like the one she suffered.
And now, we are approaching the city. It took longer than anticipated, and golden hour is starting.
"I told you I would help you get here!" She says with a wide smile. "Now we just have to-"
"Halt! Who goes there!"
When we reach the gate, two guards stop us by crossing their spears in our path.
What an iconic scene.
"Is there a problem?" Kathrina asks.
"State your name and business." The other guard says.
"What? I am Kathrina, from the Malkor's Eagles... We just want to enter."
"Amber, I just want to enter too," I answer.
Both look at us with suspicion. They are both human and tall. They are wearing full Iron Armor, and their spears seem well taken care of.
"... Sorry, but we have orders not to let anyone suspicious to enter." The first one speaks. "We need to know what business you have in town or leave."
"What the-!? What do you mean, suspicious?" Kathrina reacts negatively. "I am not suspicious!"
"You seem pretty beat up. Are you going to cause trouble and fights in town, don't you?" The second one adds.
"How dare you say I am a troublemaker?!" Kathrina pointed at herself. "I am a Holy Warrior member of the Malkor's Eagles! Why would I be causing problems?!"
I would call her a troublefinder...
"Oh! Right!" I remember something.
I open my unorganized inventory screen and find the letter. Like with the scrolls, I pull it out through the menu, and it appears in my hand.
"Here... The princess summoned me." I say while handing them the letter.
"What?!" Kathrina screams.
"What?"
"You were summoned by the princess?! When you are done with her, I will ask a good number of questions about who you are!"
"Why didn't you ask me in the way here?"
Seriously, why didn't she?
"I was doing my job!"
"If by job you mean distrancting yourself..."
"Hmph...!" She crosses her arms and looks away.
The guard on the right takes the letter and reads it.
"Seems real..." He then hands it back to me. "You can come in, but there will be consequences if the letter is fake."
"Sure..."
What was that? In the game, I never ran into something like this... even less in this town. Stuff like this only happened when you were a criminal and you got recognized, but I was not playing as one with Amber.
In fact... I am meant to be in positive standing with the kingdom of Rhavirie.
They let us pass, not without giving us suspicious looks.
We pass on them, not paying any more attention than that.
"I suppose I should not ask you if you need a guide to this town?" Kathrina asks as we enter.
I smile.
The town is lively. People from different races, carrying weapons. Humans, elves, and felins were more common in this part of the world. I was a rarity. Vulpins were rarely seen in human towns in this kingdom.
In fact, I cannot avoid looking in the direction of a few Felins. They are all female, so they are just catgirls in the flesh! They seem to be doing some shopping around town... maybe they are adventurers...
The experience is too different from the game... I am seeing the characters, colorful as they are, with my own eyes.
"Although I can take you like a tourist..." Kathrina added.
I shake my head to get myself back to reality. I know the town, it is one of the few I tend to visit after dungeon crawling in my save... but it is weird to see it like this.
I recognize the main road, I can see the plaza in the end, where it leads to, the huge tree that towers over the buildings, and even further on a hill, the palace that I have visited a few times already.
But it is not the same... is odd... I suppose I am a newcomer here in some way.
"Gheezz... you are so dumbfounded..." Kathrina says.
"Sorry... I am just with some stuff in my head... this place is looks so different..."
"Different... Ah, you must mean about what happened years ago." Kathrina ads as we arrive at the plaza. We get under the three's shadow. "Yeah.... maybe you came here for when that happened. This place was attacked by a powerful cult and their demons... the whole place was a disaster..."
Ah... that is not what I meant, and I was thinking out loud. But I know what she is talking about. When I started this save, a faction called "The Hand of Uthln" attacked, summoning demons and other beasts, and destroyed the town.
"I heard a powerful adventurer managed to destroy them about a year ago and helped the king to rebuild."
"Ah... yeah, this place was destroyed, I saw it too..." I answer, still looking around.
"Well, I am going to get us a room in an inn! I need to eat and rest... you are going to the palace, right?"
"Y-yeah. I am going there. See you later."
She decided to wait for me. I sigh, but I don't protest. Maybe is for the better. When we are calmer, I will explain to her what is happening to me... how I am not from this world.
But her words about the adventurer are repeating in my head. She was here when that happened then, when this town was destroyed... I remember the place was littered with the bodies of dead people, kids crying for their mothers, buildings on fire.
And that mage that defeated the cult... was Amber.
