Devourer: Echoes of the unwritten

Chapter 17: Chapter 17: “Children of the Code – The New Hunters Rise”

[Scene: Earth – Everywhere, All At Once]

FLASH.

All across the world, screens cracked.

Interfaces glitched.

Then—reformed.

But they were no longer under System control.

They were open.

For the first time since the age of class awakening… there were no restrictions.

No rank locks.

No genetic gates.

No level ceilings.

The new message rang out to all:

[You are now free to evolve.]

[You are no longer bound to a system class.]

[The Devourer God watches.]

[Scene: Outer Slums – A 12-Year-Old Awakens]

A skinny boy sat in a tent made of trash bags and cloth. His name was Ryo. He'd never awakened. Classless. Useless.

Until today.

A window appeared before him—blazing red and violet.

[System Access: GRANTED]

[Available Paths: Unlimited]

"Choose your trait," the system whispered.

His trembling fingers tapped:

"Survivor"

A pulse rushed through his veins.

Power.

Finally.

[Scene: Mid-City – Black Market Chaos]

In the underworld, weapons dealers stared in horror.

Former weaklings now had legendary class traits.

Street gangs awakened with S-Rank mobility.

A baker shot fire from his arms by mistake.

"It's chaos!" a woman screamed.

"Everyone's becoming a hunter!"

A cloaked voice replied:

"No… they're becoming unpredictable."

[Scene: Kaito – Watching from the System Throne]

Kaito sat atop his black spire—the Cathedral of Code—gazing into the world.

Thousands of new nodes lit up in his Devourer Sight.

So many lives. So many fresh sparks.

"They finally have a choice."

But his screen pulsed with red:

[WARNING: Unauthorized Code Signatures Detected]

[New Term Detected: SYSTEM THIEVES]

These are users who are not just accepting your new world.

They are rewriting it… without permission.

[Scene: First System Thief Encounter – City 5]

A woman floated above a desert battlefield.

Black hair. Gold robes. No eyes.

And four system rings hovered behind her—stolen, hacked, and combined.

"Kaito gave us freedom," she spoke.

"But that means we can steal from his freedom too."

She reached forward.

A guard exploded in a burst of pixels—deleted.

[Scene: Reina – Traveling Through the Burned Zones]

Reina raced toward the new beacon signals Kaito had left.

Her eyes watched as the world twisted: gangs weaponizing new traits, corrupted awakeners flooding power into unstable zones.

She spoke to herself:

"You wanted to give them freedom, Kaito."

"But freedom without balance… is madness."

[Scene: Kaito – A Decision Must Be Made]

Kaito stood from his throne.

The light dimmed.

His shadow stretched long.

"I made this world open."

"But I didn't make it fair."

The system awaited his input.

[NEW FUNCTION SUGGESTED: CODE ENFORCEMENT]

Would you like to install Judges into the New World?

Kaito paused.

Then nodded once.

"I won't be everywhere."

"But I'll make sure someone is."

He pressed [YES].

[Scene: First of the Judges Born]

In the Cathedral's lower chamber, a body formed in a circle of fire and void.

Not fully human.

Not machine.

A Devourer-borne entity with no memory… only purpose.

It opened its eyes.

Purple and gold.

"I serve the Rewrite."

[Final Scene: Far West – A Voice in the Void]

A new presence stirred in the wastelands.

Not Kaito's.

Not System-born.

A Primordial One—older than code, sealed before the world was written.

Its mind twisted.

It had awakened because of the rewrite.

And it did not believe in mercy.

"Let me show the world what power looks like… without a god."
