Aiden quietly stepped into the house, the faint creak of the door announcing his return. He barely had time to close it behind him before he noticed the dim glow of the kitchen light spilling into the hallway. There, sitting at the table with his hands clasped tightly together, was his father, Jason Blake.
Aiden sighed. He could tell by the tension in Jason's posture that this wasn't going to be a casual conversation. With measured steps, he walked into the kitchen and took a seat across from his father.
"Son," Jason began, his voice steady but tinged with emotion.
"Father," Aiden replied, nodding respectfully.
Jason hesitated, as though searching for the right words. Finally, he spoke, his voice raw and unfiltered. "I want to talk about the events that have happened recently. To be honest, I… I'm not sure what I want to say. I know I try my best to be a good father to you, but knowing you've been hurt makes me think that I'm responsible for that." His voice faltered slightly, leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.
"Dad… it's not your fault. I—"
But Jason cut him off, his hand rising to silence his son. "No. No. Don't smooth this over for me. I'm a SHIELD agent, and your mom is a mutant who works for Xavier's school. We're both far beyond normal, yet our son… our son is stronger than we are. Braver. More mature." Jason's voice grew heavier with each word. "Aiden, I didn't approve of you becoming a hero, or anything like that, but I didn't stand in your way. Because I believe in you, son. I know you will be a hero one day."
Jason's hands tightened into fists as his voice cracked. "But as your father, I have the right to be afraid for you, don't I? I deserve to shout at my son, to tell him to stay out of danger, to not risk his life for others. Because I…" He paused, his gaze locking onto Aiden's. "Because we love you."
Aiden lowered his head, his chest tightening as emotions swirled within him. Back in his previous life, he'd never had a family like this. Jason and Lucy had become his anchor, their love and care for him something he cherished deeply.
Raising his head, he met his father's eyes. "Dad, you do have that right. And I wouldn't argue against it. If I were a parent, I probably wouldn't allow it either. But I'll tell you this here and now—I am different. I have many objectives and goals in this life that you simply can't stop me from pursuing."
His voice grew firm, resolute. "I can't promise you that I'll come home unscathed every time. I also can't promise you that I'll live. Honestly, I see a future where no one is my equal. But I can't guarantee that either. What I can promise, what I can guarantee, is that your son will become the greatest hero, and I will make you proud. That, I promise."
Jason stared at him, his heart warring between fear and pride. Despite wanting to argue, to tell his son he deserved to live a peaceful, happy life like the people he was saving, he couldn't ignore the conviction in Aiden's words.
"Then this is the last time I'll stand against you," Jason said, his voice thick with emotion. "You can do whatever you want. But promise me one thing—never descend into evil. I know you're filled with thoughts of vengeance, and I can't fault you for that. But promise me you won't stoop to their level to achieve it. Promise me you'll always be a hero. Is that right, son?"
Aiden smiled faintly, his gaze unwavering. "Of course, Father."
As he rose from his seat, he glanced toward the living room, speaking louder. "And I promise the same to you, Mom."
From the shadows, Lucy stepped forward, her face soft yet resolute. She had been listening in, hiding her presence to avoid intervening, afraid her emotions would overwhelm her. Now, as she stood there, tears glistening in her eyes, pride swelled within her.
Jason placed a hand on her shoulder, and the two shared a glance, their unspoken agreement clear—they believed in their son. Lucy took a shaky breath, her voice quiet yet firm. "We'll hold you to that promise, Aiden."
With that, Aiden nodded and headed toward his room. Behind him, his parents exchanged a look of bittersweet understanding
...
The morning sun cast a golden hue over Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters as Aiden made his way back to the institute. His footsteps were steady, yet there was a subtle tension in the air. As soon as he stepped through the gates, he felt it—the weight of countless gazes all turning toward him. Some were curious, others cautious, and a few sympathetic.
Aiden ignored them all. He wasn't here to entertain whispers or pity. His destination was clear.
He strode toward the Training Facility, where his team would be. His pace quickened as he neared the doors, his mind briefly flashing back to the chaos of the recent mission. When he pushed open the doors, the familiar sound of grunts and the clash of training equipment greeted him.
Inside, his team was hard at work. Noriko's electric surges lit up her sparring area, Jubilation was testing her precision with energy bursts, Bobby was sculpting ice formations with focused determination, and Kitty was practicing her phasing technique.
Aiden stopped in the doorway, observing them for a moment. 'It seems they've gotten over the incident, at least outwardly. That's good to see.'
As soon as they noticed him, all activity ceased.
"AIDEN!" Kitty's voice rang out as she sprinted toward him, her expression lighting up with relief. The others followed close behind, their voices overlapping as they bombarded him with questions.
"Are you okay?"
"What took you so long?"
"Did you really recover already?"
Aiden raised his hands, trying to calm the flurry of concern. "Relax, relax. Hold on." His voice was calm but firm. "First things first—I see everyone's here, but where's Kevin?"
The atmosphere shifted. Their earlier enthusiasm was replaced with a somber silence. Heads lowered, and no one met his gaze until Noriko finally spoke up.
"He quit… after the incident," she muttered, bitterness lacing her tone. "Don't worry about him, Aiden. He's a coward."
"Noriko!" Kitty snapped, shooting her a sharp look.
"You can't call him a coward," Jubilation interjected. "He has the right to make that choice. This work is dangerous, and you know that."
Aiden nodded, his expression unreadable. "That's fine," he said. "Honestly, it's okay that he quit. If any of you feel the need to step away, don't hesitate to do so. Don't feel ashamed of it either. This work is dangerous. You're all young, and you deserve to choose the future you want for yourselves."
The room fell into a contemplative silence. For a moment, no one spoke. But Aiden could see it—the flicker of determination in their eyes. None of them were backing down.
Kitty stepped forward, her voice steady but emotional. "We're all young, Aiden. You too. And yeah, it's scary and dangerous. But our friend is still out there. Rogue is out there. We don't even know what those bastards are doing to her. We need to get her back."
Noriko's fists clenched, sparks of electricity crackling in the air. "Not only that. We need to make them pay. For Piotr and Sam. Those bastards killed our friends, and we could've died too. We can't back down now!"
Bobby looked down, his voice quieter but heavy with anger. "And John and Amara. Let's not forget about them. I thought they were our friends… but they betrayed us. They're just as responsible for what happened as Juggernaut and Magneto."
Jubilation stepped forward, her energy flaring briefly as she crossed her arms. She locked eyes with Aiden and spoke decisively. "Well, leader. What's our plan? Let's be honest, Aiden—we know you. You haven't been mourning for the last three weeks, right? You've been planning. You have a plan for revenge and for getting Rogue back."
The fire in their words struck Aiden. Despite their pain and fear, their spirits were unbroken. They were ready to keep fighting. Aiden smirked, his confidence unwavering as he looked at each of them.
"Well then," he said, his tone of amusement "I guess I don't really need a motivation speech for you, do I? All right, first things first—here's the plan…"
