Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Lucy Joins
After Escanor received the generous 10EJ reward from the Council, he did what any self-respecting Saint Ten Great Magus would do—he bought a manor.
A large, beautifully designed manor just outside Magnolia became the new residence of Escanor, Erza, and Mira. It had ample space, lush gardens, reinforced training grounds, and, most importantly, a massive armory room—finally solving Erza's long-standing issue of space for her hundreds of armors and weapons. Mira, meanwhile, took up the role of head of the household, managing every corner of the estate with graceful efficiency.
But the quiet days didn't last.
Fairy Tail had entered a period of unprecedented popularity. Ever since Escanor's ascension to the Ten Wizard Saints, job requests flowed in like water. Erza resumed her intense work schedule, while Mira was fully occupied handling guild affairs.
Escanor? Well, the man had little need to lift a finger. With an enormous daily allowance from the Council and bountiful savings, he spent his days leisurely—half drinking, half daydreaming in the guild, soaking up the sunshine like a retired war god.
Meanwhile, Natsu Dragneel received a hot tip from fellow member Leo: rumors of a "Fire Dragon" performing magic tricks in Hargeon Port. Natsu, who had spent his whole life searching for Igneel, the dragon who raised him, dashed off with Happy, convinced this was finally a lead.
Hargeon Port—Midday
Crowds gathered in the square, mesmerized by a middle-aged man dressed like nobility, spewing flashy fire magic for cheers and coins.
"Lord Fire Dragon, you're amazing!" young girls shouted.
Nearby, a blonde girl in stylish clothes was haggling in a magic shop.
"Only 1,000J for this Celestial Spirit Key!? That's robbery!" she protested before reluctantly purchasing it.
This was Lucy Heartfilia, a Celestial Spirit Magus. Keys of all sizes and colors jingled at her waist as she walked—clearly still annoyed with the price.
As fate would have it, Natsu came barreling down the street and collided with her.
"Hey! You didn't even help me up!" Lucy called after him—but Natsu was long gone, sprinting toward the square in pursuit of the Fire Dragon faker.
Natsu reached the square, only to realize the "Fire Dragon" was no dragon at all.
"You're not Igneel! You're just a fraud!" he yelled.
The man, startled, tried to keep up the act but quickly realized his scam was about to be exposed. Disappearing into the crowd, he vanished—right as Lucy, hot on Natsu's heels, also arrived.
Hearing "Fairy Tail" mentioned in the crowd, Lucy's heart skipped a beat. She approached the man who had just fled and asked excitedly, "Excuse me! Are you with Fairy Tail? I want to join!"
The man grinned evilly.
"Oh, how lucky. I am the Fire Dragon of Fairy Tail."
Lucy's eyes sparkled. "No way! Really?"
He nodded and extended a gloved hand. A charm spell hidden in his ring flashed—and Lucy's eyes glazed over slightly. Hypnotized, she followed him toward the docks.
Above the harbor, Escanor hovered silently.
"Something feels off," he muttered, having flown to Hargeon out of curiosity about the Fire Dragon rumors. "That guy's no dragon."
He spotted the man leading Lucy toward a ship—and the subtle magic pulsing from his ring.
Escanor's eyes narrowed.
Below deck on the ship, several girls around Lucy's age sat, clearly charmed or unconscious.
"Ohh, boss, this one's got curves and attitude! Good find!"
"Don't touch her yet! She's worth more intact!" the boss barked.
But the charm was fading fast—Lucy's own magic resisting the hypnosis.
"You tricked me! You're not with Fairy Tail at all!" she shouted.
The boss sneered and raised his ring again. "Foolish girl."
Just then—BOOM!
The cabin door exploded inward, and Escanor stepped through, golden light casting a long shadow behind him.
"You scum are beyond forgiveness," he said coldly.
The traffickers trembled as intense pressure filled the room."I-I- It's Escanor! Th-the Saint Ten—""Remember the name of the one sending you to hell."
Snap.
The traffickers combusted where they stood. Their screams were brief, their end inevitable.
The spell broke. Lucy and the other girls slowly came to.
"W-Where am I?""Was I kidnapped!?"
Escanor spoke calmly, telling them they were now safe. He left out the part about incinerating the traffickers—it would do no good to traumatize the girls further.
"Th-thank you… Wait… YOU'RE ESCANOR?!"
Squeals echoed as the rescued girls realized who stood before them.
Just then—
CRASH!Natsu came flying in, fists blazing. "FAKE FIRE DRAGON! I GOT YOU NOW!"
Escanor turned just in time. "Natsu, wait—"
BAM!Natsu face-planted into the deck.
"Ugh… Escanor?!""Seriously, you're as reckless as ever."
Happy peeked out from behind a barrel. "Aye, Natsu's down again~"
Lucy blinked. "Wait. That's Natsu? From Fairy Tail?"
Escanor chuckled. "The one and only."
Soon after, the town guards arrived. Escanor calmly handed over the ship and explained the trafficking operation. The girls were escorted home, and peace returned to Hargeon.
Lucy stood before Escanor, fists clenched.
"Please! Let me join Fairy Tail! I beg you!"
Natsu, dazed and still holding his head, gave her a thumbs-up. Happy was asleep in the corner.
Escanor looked at the determined girl.
"You're Lucy...?"
"Yes!" she nodded, eyes shining.
"…Then—welcome to Fairy Tail." He smiled.
"YAYYYYYY!!!"
And so… Fairy Tail's gates opened once more.Three people and one cat returned home—A new journey is beginning.
