Chapter 84: Magic Meets Military Strategy
The Commander, General, Prime Minister and Madam Bones looked at Hermione. Then they looked at her parents. Then they looked at Midshipman Fenix. "Hermione. You are the smartest person I know. How would you like to help?" Evan asked. "I can…..I can…Humph! I am not allowed to defend myself with magic outside of school. I can't defend myself the non-magical way….." Hermione began looking distressed. "How about….you and your parents research and devise snake traps. There are bound to be things that snakes are most attracted to – we will need the snake to swallow some explosive charges. If you can think how we can make that happen, that would be great!" Evan suggested.
"You want to blow up Buckingham Palace? Whatever for?" asked the Prime Minister. "It's not Buckingham Palace that we want to blow up, Prime Minister. Just the snake" responded the Commander. "And are you sure it's Buckingham Palace that Volde…mort wants to infiltrate? The Queen is known to be in Sandringham for Christmas and New Years." The Prime Minister continued. That caused everybody to pause. "True – the real question is, does Voldemort know? We would have to split up to check both locations. Each of these locations is immense – finding one person, let alone a snake is going to be one hell of a job." Said the Commander.
"What if, instead of searching for the snake, we have the snake search for you?" began Hermione. "Go on" prompted the Commander. "The Basilisk is an apex predator. It searches for its prey. Why not give it a target? If we can lure the snake where we want it, we don't have to search for it. Once it comes to where we want it, we can portkey it someplace else to destroy it. No searching, no explosions in castles or palaces." She continued.
Madam Bones scoffed. "The skin of a Basilisk is resistant to magical spells. The sight of its eyes kills instantly. How are you going to restrain it or put a portkey on it? How are you going to prevent the Basilisk from killing everybody wherever you send it, if you do get a portkey on it? And without magic? Are you daft, girl?" Madam Bones asked incredulously.
"After being petrified by the Basilisk in 2nd year, my friend Harry Potter and I did some research about snakes. Not so much in the magical world, but in the non-magical world. You would not believe some of the ingenious but simple and non-magical ways people catch snakes in places like the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam or even India. Some pipe, rope, a strong spring, and some triggers are all they used. Why can't we do the same? Turn the tube into a portkey. The portkey can activate once the triggers on the spring are activated. The snake is restrained in the trap and the whole thing is transported." Responded Hermione.
"What is to prevent it from going around or over your trap? And what do you mean 'being petrified by a Basilisk in 2nd year'? I was never told anything about that?!" Madam Bones exclaimed. "That surprises me, Madam Bones. Your niece, Susan was one of the several students petrified." Replied Hermione. "As to getting the snake into the trap, I remember Harry saying the Basilisk in the castle said that it smelt blood. Why don't we lay a trail the snake can't resist?" she continued.
"Where should we portkey the beast?" Madam Bones asked. "That means teleport, doesn't it?" asked the Sensei. "Something like that." Responded Hermione. "I would suggest someplace that limits its movement – perhaps someplace bound on two sides by high concrete walls. That would limit its range of motion, and allow us to focus our efforts." The Sensei suggested.
"What about one of the subway tunnels?" asked Dr. (Peter) Granger. "I am sure there are some unused portions of the subway. Or what about those old WW2 bomb shelters, if we are worried about it escaping?" he continued. "That is not a bad idea." Said the Commander. "Although I have a better one – we have a concrete room we use to train the troops in the proper use of gas masks. We could erect some extra walls inside, further limiting their movement and pump gas into the room to kill it. We can have some troops outside with weapons equipped with armor-piercing bullets and a few other presents in case it does get out." He said. "It looks like we have an outline of a plan. Let's iron out the details." Said the Commander.
Later that afternoon Evan felt a tug on his pants. He excused himself and went to the restrooms. He came back with an elongated duffle bag. Opening it on the table he pulled out a set of Ninjato swords, two dragon-hide gauntlets (wrist-bracers) with several throwing knives tucked into individual pockets, two pouches of metallic balls filled with magnesium, potassium perchlorate and aluminum powder (small flash bang explosives); and two pouches filled with metallic cones fitted on one side with a female-threaded socket and the other side with a cylindrical pocket (shape-charge explosive tips for arrows). In addition, there was a box filled with 500 bullets. Everybody with the exception of Sensei looked from the bags contents to Evan. "What? I went to a special armorer Sensei recommended early this morning, to order these in anticipation of what we are likely to encounter. I was inspired by Rambo!" he said.
