Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Ramen
Chapter 89: Ramen
Though nominally an S-rank rogue ninja of Konoha, Kakashi Hatake's wanted poster had not actually been widely distributed. Due to Minato's covert investigation, only the high command of the Land of Water and Konoha knew that he was still alive.
Moreover, the Fourth Hokage had personally promised to help Kakashi clear his name and establish a new identity, though he was unaware that the latter had no intention of returning to Konoha.
As Kakashi left the Uchiha clan's compound, people were trickling back home from the direction of the Hokage's building. The streets here were not crowded; many of Konoha's top shinobi had been dispatched to missions or to command on the battlefields. Those who remained in the village were mostly civilians, academy children, and the necessary guards.
The Third Hokage and the two elders, who held down the fort, rarely made public appearances, so Kakashi wasn't worried about bumping into them on the street.
First, I'll fill my stomach, then find a quiet place to exchange for the Disguise Mask.
When it came to filling his stomach here, the first place that came to the silver-haired boy's mind was the famous Ichiraku Ramen, followed by the Yakiniku restaurant. Barbecue felt a bit too heavy right now, and it had been a while since he'd had noodles, so Ichiraku Ramen it was.
He used a transformation to hide his hair color but left his face unchanged. Just like that, Kakashi brazenly walked into Ichiraku Ramen. Teuchi was a stubborn and dedicated man who had devoted himself to ramen for 24 years. The First, Second, Third, and Fourth Hokage had all eaten the ramen he personally prepared.
Beside him, a little girl of about four or five was diligently watching her father's ramen-making technique. Teuchi had his daughter, Ayame, in middle age and doted on her, but he hadn't spoiled the little girl into a lawless young lady. Instead, she had developed a keen interest in ramen herself. Given some time, she would surely inherit his legacy and become the next ramen sovereign of Konoha.
"One bowl of Miso Chashu Ramen."
"Coming right up!"
Teuchi found the customer very familiar but just couldn't recall when he had seen him. Admitting to himself that his memory was average, he quickly put it out of his mind and focused on making the ramen.
The aroma of the broth was fragrant and appetizing. Kakashi picked up his chopsticks and quickly took a bite.
"Careful, it's hot."
Despite the warning, the young man in front of him seemed not to have heard, continuing to devour his food rapidly. His voracious eating brought a smile to Teuchi's face.
As a ramen chef, nothing brought him more joy than a customer enjoying his food.
"Chashu ramen."
A pleasant female voice made Teuchi pause his moment of pride.
"Coming right up, future Hokage's wife!"
A faint blush appeared on Kushina's face, but she didn't deny it. Today was Minato's first day in office, and he was busy with work, so she couldn't be by his side. It wouldn't be right for her to disturb him; this was a test of being an understanding future wife.
Cooking and eating alone wasn't very enjoyable, so Kushina had come to her favorite ramen shop.
Ichiraku Ramen was small; it could only seat four or five people at most. The Hokage's girlfriend, who exuded the aura of a married woman, noticed a young man already eating ramen to her left and paid him some attention.
Kakashi also noticed someone sitting to his right. He looked up, choked abruptly, and quickly turned away to cough, wiping his mouth with a napkin.
To think this woman got so close to me and I only just sensed her now. Damn it, have I become that dull? Or was I just distracted?
Thankfully, his hair was disguised. Otherwise, she would have recognized him at a glance and dragged him by the neck to the Hokage's office.
Little did he know, those few coughs had already betrayed him.
Kushina found him more and more familiar, but Kakashi had silver hair, not black. Just as she thought she was mistaken, the person looked at her and was so startled he started coughing. That made things suspicious.
"Do you need a tissue?"
Pressing his throat to alter his voice, the boy spoke with a weary tone unfitting for his age.
"No, I have one. Thank you."
That was even more suspicious.
After waiting for thirty seconds, Kushina saw that he was still turned away. Her own ramen was ready, so she pretended to eat, making slurping sounds while observing the boy's reaction out of the corner of her eye.
Slowly turning his head, Kakashi held his chopsticks tightly in his right hand, poised in mid-air. Then, in one swift motion, he grabbed all the remaining noodles, turned his head, and finished them in a flash.
"Thank you for the meal."
"Please come again."
This was said in Ayame's sweet, childish voice. She couldn't help much at this stage, so this was her way of bringing back repeat customers for her father.
Leaving money on the table, the boy stood up, turned his back to Kushina, lifted the curtain, and walked away from the shop.
"Wait."
Halted by the person behind him, Kakashi actually stopped. Continuing to leave at this point would only increase her suspicion.
"I'm in a hurry."
"Please pack this ramen to go, thank you."
Quickly handing the bowl to Teuchi, Kushina stopped the boy and then approached him with the packed ramen.
"I feel like I've met you before."
"No. Or maybe. Konoha is pretty small, so it's normal that you might have seen me."
"But this level of familiarity isn't normal. You look like a teenager, yet you speak with such a mature voice. What are you hiding?"
"I'm not hiding anything. My voice is just naturally like this."
"Then, can you let me see your face?"
Without giving the boy time to react, Kushina leaped in front of him. But the face she saw made her wonder if she had been mistaken after all.
She had definitely never seen this face before.
Considering the possibility of a transformation jutsu, Kushina gathered her chakra, preparing to use the malicious intent and chakra sensory abilities granted by the Nine-Tails to determine if this guy was using one.
"Ma'am, I'm really busy. Lord Hokage took office today, and I have to get back to work. If I'm late, my boss will fire me."
"Then you can go."
"Farewell."
With that, Kakashi started jogging towards the intersection. As soon as the wall blocked the woman's line of sight, he could leave at top speed.
"Kakashi Hatake?"
Hearing his name, the boy's pace neither quickened nor slowed; he continued forward at a steady speed.
The Nine-Tails' chakra didn't sense any malice, but it did sense that this guy was indeed using a transformation jutsu. The probability that it was Kakashi had just jumped to ninety percent.
It was time to make him show his true colors.
"Sealing Jutsu: Adamantine Sealing Chains!"
Using the unique ability of the Uzumaki clan, she unleashed multiple chakra chains from her back. Their power was enough to suppress the Nine-Tails; what effect would binding a person with them have?
In truth, it wasn't as advantageous as it was against a Tailed Beast, but it was enough to expose the boy's true abilities.
Just as she expected, before the chains could wrap around him, the boy severed them with a purple lightning jutsu. His hair turned back to silver, and his face transformed into the one Kushina knew so well.
"..."
How could Sensei have fallen for such a violent woman?
His identity revealed, Kakashi no longer bothered to run or hide. He showed his true face, hoping to appease his master's wife's anger a little.
In terms of combat matchups, the silver-haired boy's most difficult opponent wasn't his master, but his master's wife.
