Chapter 22: Chapter 22 : The Fourth Phase of the Hunter Exam l
After 3 Days, Zevil Island.
"Now, please, the person who completed the Third Phase first, step forward," said a woman who was working with the Hunter Association to oversee the Fourth Phase.
28 applicants had passed the Third Phase and were transported to Zevil Island for the Fourth Phase, which was an elimination battle among the applicants.
The rules of this phase were simple: each person held a card worth 3 points. Everyone had received cards through a lottery, which contained the numbers of other applicants, also worth 3 points.
To succeed, an applicant needed to collect 6 points, meaning they had to protect their own card and obtain their target's card to pass.
However, even if an applicant lost their card and couldn't obtain their target's card, they could still pass by collecting 6 other cards, as each additional card was worth 1 point.
"I'll go first," said Touta, stepping off the boat and staring at the card with his target's number.
301.
This was Touta's target, and he recognized him as the man with many needles in his face. The other party hadn't even bothered to remove the card from his chest.
Of course, it wasn't just number 301 who hadn't removed his card. Touta, Kuroumaru, Mechi, Hisoka, Killua, and finally Gon had also kept their cards visible. The others, however, had hidden their cards as soon as the lottery ended.
After stepping off the boat, Touta didn't go far. He sat casually on a tree, waiting for Kuroumaru, who was likely to be next.
The tree allowed him to keep an eye on the boat, watching for applicant number 301 to emerge. Touta intended to go after his target's card rather than chasing weaker applicants for their cards. However, he wouldn't hesitate to take others' cards if they crossed his path, as their cards might be needed by Gon and the others. Doing so would also reduce the number of competitors in the Final Phase, which would follow this one.
Touta didn't have to wait long before he saw Kuroumaru step off the boat, using Shundo to quickly appear beside him.
"Sorry for making you wait, Touta-kun," said Kuroumaru, jumping onto the tree next to Touta to watch the boat.
"It's fine. I didn't wait long," Touta shook his head lightly, noting Kuroumaru's politeness. "By the way, who's your target?"
"53, the guy with the bow," Kuroumaru said, staring at the boat as Machi stepped off. She was the third person to complete the Third Phase.
"That guy..." Touta muttered, recalling the person in question. Despite being weak and short, he remembered him because of his extremely loud voice. "If I recall, his name was Pokkle."
"That's right, it's him," Kuroumaru nodded, remembering Pokkle's name when Touta mentioned it. "By the way, Touta-kun, do you want to split up so you can chase number 301 while I go after number 53?"
"Of course. We won't have any issues since we can communicate using Telepathy," Touta nodded at Kuroumaru's suggestion. After finishing their game of Babanuki, Kuroumaru had taught him how to use Telepathy.
By the way, the losers in the Babanuki game were Touta and Machi, while Kuroumaru had won with a fiery fighting spirit.
"Then I'll go first," said Touta, seeing number 301 step off the boat. He concealed his presence by absorbing every particle of Nen into himself, allowing him to hide even from the sharpest senses and powers.
"Take care of yourself, and be careful. That guy, number 301, is extremely strong," Kuroumaru said, staring at Touta, who had completely disappeared from his senses. If he hadn't been right in front of him, Kuroumaru wouldn't have known he was there.
"Alright," said Touta, jumping from the tree to another as number 301 took a different path from the one they were on.
Two minutes after number 301, number 294 stepped off the boat—a bald ninja—followed by number 384, a man wearing a hat and carrying a meter-long blowgun.
After the man with the blowgun, Kuroumaru's target, number 53, Pokkle, stepped off.
Seeing Pokkle heading his way, Kuroumaru didn't hesitate to summon his sword and wait for Pokkle to approach.
Pokkle walked cautiously, holding a knife at his thigh. Although his primary weapon was the bow on his back, it would be useless if someone ambushed him. They'd be on him before he could even draw an arrow to shoot.
Because of this, Pokkle was prepared for close combat, even though he wasn't the best at it. He wouldn't go down without a fight.
But unfortunately for Pokkle, Kuroumaru was targeting him, and Kuroumaru was extremely skilled in close combat, having trained in Shinmei-ryū since childhood.
The moment Pokkle got close enough, Kuroumaru didn't hesitate to use Shundo, disappearing and reappearing behind Pokkle with his blade already at his neck.
"Hand over your number card, and I won't harm you," Kuroumaru said seriously, grabbing Pokkle's hand, which was on the knife at his thigh, and twisting it. "And be sure I won't show mercy if you try to trick me."
"O-okay, I won't do anything, so please don't kill me," Pokkle said in a trembling voice, terrified, especially feeling the cold blade on his neck. He didn't hesitate to pull out his number card with his free hand.
"..." Kuroumaru didn't say anything. He released Pokkle's hand, which he had twisted behind his back, took the number card, and verified it was real before disappearing, leaving Pokkle alone.
"Damn, the Hunter Exam is full of monsters," Pokkle muttered in fear, collapsing to the ground as his strength gave out. He couldn't stand, still feeling the cold blade on his neck.
