Chapter 185: Chapter 185: The Script Is Wrong!

"Sokovia was already doomed before you destroyed it," Zemo said, his voice cold and unwavering. "I lost everyone. And so will you."

He turned a monitor toward the trio, queuing up a video. The screen flickered to life, displaying black-and-white footage dated December 16, 1991—the eve of the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Zemo's lips curled into a bitter smile as he added, "An empire destroyed by an external enemy can rebuild itself. But one that crumbles from within? It is lost forever."

The ominous statement hung in the air as the trio's eyes fixed on the screen. Satisfied that he had their attention, Zemo slipped away, leaving them absorbed in the unfolding drama.

The grainy footage showed a car skidding off a snowy road and crashing into a tree. The camera zoomed in as an older man crawled out of the wreckage, clearly injured. Bucky recognized the scene immediately—this was his handiwork, his mission. He lowered his head, guilt written across his face.

In the video, Howard Stark, lying on the ground, turned his head and recognized Bucky. He called out weakly, his voice filled with disbelief. For a brief moment, recognition flickered in the Winter Soldier's eyes, a crack in the programming. But it didn't last. Seconds later, his metal arm shot forward, delivering a devastating punch.

The footage showed the Winter Soldier standing over Howard's lifeless body. He walked to the passenger seat, checked it, and found it empty. Without hesitation, he aimed his gun at the surveillance camera, shooting it out before disappearing into the night.

The screen went dark.

Steve turned to Tony, his expression filled with concern. He understood Zemo's goal now: to turn them against each other, to exploit their vulnerabilities and destroy the Avengers from within.

Tony's eyes were closed, his face unreadable. The silence stretched uncomfortably until he opened his eyes, his expression surprisingly calm. "Steve," he began, his voice even, "I have to say, your partner isn't very professional. Assassinating a man in his fifties and missing? Really?"

Steve blinked, caught off guard. "Wait… what?"

Tony's lips curled into a faint, ironic smile. "Howard's not dead."

Bucky, who had been bracing himself for Tony's wrath, looked up in shock. "What?"

Steve, still uncertain, stepped closer. "You're serious? Howard survived?"

Tony nodded. "Barely. He had multiple doctors declare him dead that night. But—plot twist—he wasn't. Turns out, he discovered something about himself: no matter how severe the injury, he could recover. Slowly, but surely."

Bucky's shoulders sagged with relief. The weight of decades of guilt eased, replaced by disbelief. "So… I didn't kill him?"

Tony gave him a small nod. "No. He was pretty banged up, though. After that night, Howard decided to retire for real. Handed Stark Industries over to me and disappeared from the public eye. Most people assumed he'd died or become a recluse, but really, he spent his last years doing everything he'd ever wanted—skydiving, racing, even mountain climbing. You name it."

Steve's jaw dropped. "Are you serious? That sounds… impossible."

"Doesn't it?" Tony smirked. "But it's true. Before he passed, he even drew a tube of his own blood and asked me to study it. Turns out, he had a unique genetic anomaly. Something in him was… different."

"Super soldier serum?" Steve asked, his pulse quickening.

Tony shook his head. "I thought the same thing at first, but no. The real answer came years later. I traced the anomaly back to Maya Hansen's research on Extremis."

Bucky frowned, confused. "Extremis? What's that?"

"It's a regenerative formula," Tony explained. "Hansen developed it to heal injuries, even fatal ones. My guess? Thor brought it to my dad decades ago. Knowing him, he probably foresaw all of this and set up contingencies."

Steve raised an eyebrow. "Thor? You're saying he planned this?"

Tony sighed. "The guy's been meddling in my life for years. Heck, the only reason my dad was driving alone that night was because he'd just had an argument with my mom—an argument about something Thor said decades earlier."

Bucky finally spoke, his voice low but steady. "I still owe you an apology, Tony. Even if I didn't kill your father, I remember that night. I came close, and that's on me."

Tony regarded him for a moment before nodding. "Apology accepted. Look, my dad never held it against you. He knew it wasn't your fault—you were just a weapon Hydra aimed at him. If he could let it go, so can I."

Steve exhaled, tension leaving his body. "Thank you, Tony. That means a lot."

Outside the base, Zemo leaned against a tree, headphones in place as he listened to the conversation. He waited, expecting to hear the sounds of a heated argument or even a fight. Instead, all he heard was polite conversation and reconciliation.

His face twisted in disbelief. "What the hell?" he muttered, yanking the headphones out. "That's it? That's all it takes to forgive patricide? Tony Stark, are you this generous? Or just insane?"

He slumped against the tree, muttering curses under his breath. The script he'd written in his mind was unraveling before his eyes.
