Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Fierce Battle with Mr. Freeze

The drilling platform was located in the center of the open sea. The Batplane brought the three of them here—this was the only abandoned drilling platform near Gotham City.

Rust had spread all over, with multiple damages to its shell, and the bent supports made it look as though the platform could fall into the sea at any moment.

There was no place to land, but Batman's warplane had a hovering system. The jet's exhaust nozzles rotated, allowing the plane to stop in midair. The three of them then descended one by one using ropes.

The damp sea breeze, carrying a fishy smell, hit them as they stood at the edge of the platform, looking out into the distance. The bright blue sea stretched to the horizon where the rising sun was visible.

Batman pulled out a black life detector and began walking around the platform. "There are two of them, it should be Mr. Freeze and his wife. You were right about the intel."

Kaitou Kid replied, "That's good."

Having located them, Batman moved slowly, finally stopping at a specific spot where the life signals were directly beneath him.

Liu A'dou and Ada spread out to find the entrance, carefully walking across the dusty and rusty platform. This wasn't a place for humans to live, as a misstep could send them crashing through the decaying platform and into the depths below, potentially causing serious injury.

"I found the stairs," Liu A'dou called out.

The three of them formed a line, with Batman in front, Ada in the middle, and Kid bringing up the rear.

Upon entering the interior, they heard the hum of machinery—most likely a generator. It was the only machine that would need to be operating in such a place, and sure enough, the hallway lights were on. Though dim, they were enough to see.

The interior was in even worse shape than the outside. Many pipes were broken, and the walls, floors, and ceilings of the hallway were all in disrepair.

"Be careful, this platform is old and could collapse at any moment," Batman warned.

The others nodded, signaling they understood. This wasn't a place for recklessness; they had to be cautious.

Eventually, light began to shine through a door ahead. The door was slightly ajar, and faint music could be heard from inside.

"This is it," Batman said, pulling out the Ripple gun and pressing it against the door. Kid quietly moved to the other side of the door.

Batman gestured for them to count to three before charging in. Kid nodded.

Three!

Two!

Whoosh—

Before Batman's countdown finished, Mr. Freeze had already detected the intruders outside and launched an attack.

The wall quickly froze, and anyone who got too close would also be frozen. "Go!" Without hesitation, the two rushed through the door, and Batman charged toward Mr. Freeze.

Whoosh—

The Ripple gun released a golden energy beam that hit Mr. Freeze's chest, sending him flying.

It worked well. This energy wasn't exactly Ripple energy but a beam mimicking the Ripple's power, and it had an effect on the ice. Scanning the room quickly, Batman noticed a "glass coffin" in the center. It was most likely Dr. Victor Fries' wife.

"Dr. Victor Fries, we're here to help you," Batman said. Ever since he learned about Mr. Freeze's backstory, he had decided to use Wayne Enterprises' resources to help Victor.

But Mr. Freeze wasn't listening. After years of solitary life, he had only spoken to his wife's lifeless body. He didn't trust anyone, especially Gotham City's people.

Loneliness had turned the genius scientist into a "fool" who went down a misguided path.

Whoosh—

The freezing beam was Mr. Freeze's response to Batman.

Liu A'dou didn't idle either. He shot a card from his magic card gun to intercept the beam. "Batman, Mr. Freeze has lost his human feelings, except when it comes to his wife. Be careful. Let's subdue him first."

Batman nodded.

Whoosh—

Another freezing beam, forcing them to dodge.

Batman retaliated with his Ripple gun, but Mr. Freeze dodged. The blue and yellow beams shot through the small room, crossing paths. It was clear the ice had the upper hand. The wall behind Batman had already been completely frozen.

Meanwhile, the Ripple gun only hit the walls with dull thuds.

But both weapons' powers were accumulating—the ice added weight to the platform, and the Ripple's vibrations increased the platform's stress. Finally, Liu A'dou heard a shaking noise from the platform:

Creak, creak~~~

This wasn't good. "Batman, move quickly, the platform's going to collapse!" He called to Ada, "Mask, come help! Let's move this 'coffin' out!"

Ada nodded and stepped forward to help.

"Don't touch her!" Mr. Freeze shouted furiously. Seeing someone daring to touch his wife's cryogenic chamber, he disregarded Batman's attack and swept his freezing beam toward Liu A'dou and Ada.

"Watch out!" Liu A'dou saw the beam approaching Ada and quickly threw himself on top of her.

Whoosh—

The beam passed through the room, freezing not only the cryogenic chamber but also hitting Liu A'dou's right leg, freezing him and the chamber together. From his knee down, his body was completely encased in ice.

Liu A'dou didn't react, but before the second shot from Mr. Freeze could reach him, he had no time to dodge. He raised his right hand, ready to strike.

This wasn't reckless; it was decisive. Liu A'dou wore a Ripple amplifier ring made from synthetic diamond on his right hand's middle finger. A golden light burst from beneath his glove and met the blue beam, neutralizing the attack. But the synthetic diamond was tiny, and after just one amplification, it cracked, no longer usable. Fortunately, Batman had once again engaged Mr. Freeze, giving Liu A'dou a brief respite.

"Breathe!" Liu A'dou quickly adjusted his breathing. The cold from his right leg shot up to his heart. However, this cold was from the ice surrounding his skin, not the destructive kind from within. His blood was still flowing in his veins, and he could still use the Ripple.

Ada also began using Ripple from the outside of the ice block, performing the technique both inside and outside at the same time. The ice quickly started to thaw.

Batman covered them, using the Ripple gun to enhance its power, countering the freezing beam.

The blue and yellow beams collided, one absorbing heat, the other releasing it—just like the encounter of positive and negative electric charges, leading to unpredictable results.

This wasn't good. A very ominous feeling filled the air.

Liu A'dou was struggling, his right leg gradually regaining sensation. He suddenly released the Ripple, breaking free from the ice block. "Quick, thaw the cryogenic chamber!"

Ada, however, said, "There's no time. It's faster to break the surrounding ice."

Liu A'dou thought about it and agreed, "Golden Ripple, quick movement—"

Ada launched her attack: "Xian Dao Ripple, quick movement—"

The platform started to tilt.

"Dr. Victor, stop! I can help you and your wife!" Batman spoke again.

But Mr. Freeze didn't respond, continuing his attack.

The Ripple gun in Batman's hand was beginning to overheat, clearly on the verge of breaking down, while the freezing beam continued to grow stronger, proving that the freezing gun was superior.

There was no choice. Batman had to resort to using his explosive Batarang, throwing it toward Mr. Freeze.

An explosion went off in front of Mr. Freeze. Batman quickly rolled away, ending the exchange and tossing away his Ripple gun.

Boom—

The Ripple gun exploded violently, proving it was an emergency weapon with insufficient durability.

"Move fast, the platform's going to collapse!" Batman hurried to help, quickly placing explosives around the cryogenic chamber.

"You can't touch my wife!!" Mr. Freeze roared in fury, using his freezing gun to unleash a powerful attack.

Boom— The sound was deafening, shaking the ground. Everyone felt a sudden drop beneath their feet, as the platform finally couldn't handle the "abuse" and began to collapse.

Mr. Freeze missed his shot, and the freezing beam hit the ceiling, instantly destroying all the circuits, plunging the room into darkness.

"Follow me, I'll make a hole below, stay close!" Batman could still see, so he quickly detonated the explosives. The floor around the cryogenic chamber exploded, revealing a translucent hole, and below was the glistening surface of the sea.

The cryogenic chamber dropped directly into the water. "You go first to protect the cryogenic chamber!" Batman still had to go save Mr. Freeze.

Without hesitation, Kid and Ada jumped into the cool seawater, each pulling the other as they quickly moved towards the edge of the platform.

Thankfully, the cryogenic chamber was surrounded by ice, which kept it afloat on the water. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been able to handle it.

Debris fell, and the two of them dodged the falling pieces while anxiously wondering when Batman would reappear. But then they saw that the hole had been covered by ice—Batman had no chance of getting out.

Mr. Freeze, who deserved a beating, left Liu A'dou only praying that Batman was okay.

However, Liu A'dou forgot one thing: the two polar bears that Mr. Freeze had kept in the Arctic had not appeared yet. Now, they were here.

Without warning, both Liu A'dou and Ada were pulled deeper into the sea.

"I can't breathe!" The unexpected attack trapped both of them in danger. Without the ability to breathe in the water, they couldn't use the Ripple.

Liu A'dou tried to reach for his tools, but the polar bears were too strong. The bears, mad with rage, dragged both of them deeper into the water, farther from the surface, and it grew darker.

Liu A'dou attempted to use his tranquilizer darts, but he had no idea if they even hit their target. The polar bears were still pulling them deeper into the water.

Liu A'dou activated his strength-enhancing patch to compete with the polar bears' strength. On land, he could use leverage, but in the water, his feet couldn't find any footing. Relying solely on his hands, he could only match the bears' strength. He aimed for the polar bear's nose. Though the bear was hurt, it remained relentless, unwilling to let go.

They were running out of oxygen!

Liu A'dou's vision blurred, and he eventually fell unconscious, succumbing to the darkness.

On the platform, Batman finally went all out, throwing explosives without restraint, sending Mr. Freeze flying, disorienting him. Batman's attacks destroyed Mr. Freeze's helmet, knocking him unconscious. Batman quickly carried Mr. Freeze back to the platform.

Batman called for the Batplane and rushed to throw Mr. Freeze onto the plane—if he delayed even a moment, they would have fallen into the sea.

The platform collapsed with a loud crash, sending the water into a frenzy.

Batman looked anxiously at the churning sea, desperately searching for the locations of Kid and the Mask. However, the life detector only found the cryogenic chamber, and the figures of Kid and Mask were nowhere to be seen.

Perhaps the falling debris hit them, sending them to the depths of the endless sea. Maybe this was yet another disappearance trick from Kaitou Kid—his magic.

Batman contacted the Coast Guard, preparing to return. Mr. Freeze's broken armor meant he was dying. All Batman could do was hope that Kid had something planned. Batman lifted the cryogenic chamber and flew the plane back to Gotham City.

The two polar bears dragged their prey through the sea for what felt like an eternity. Even though Liu A'dou and Ada had lost consciousness, they kept swimming.

Instinct told them to swim north, and they swam for who knew how long before emerging above the surface, continuing their journey. They needed to ensure their prey couldn't harm their master anymore, so they swam far from him.

It wasn't until dark clouds covered the sky, the wind howled, and a heavy rainstorm hit that the polar bears finally released their hold, letting the enemy float away with the waves.

Liu A'dou, disoriented from the lack of oxygen, clung weakly to Ada's icy hand. Amid the storm's chaos, his only thought was that he couldn't let go. With all his remaining strength, he held on to her hand, knowing that if he let go, they both might truly perish in the sea.

Holding Ada's cold hand, Liu A'dou only had one thought—he absolutely couldn't let go.
