Keeping the Promise After Rebirth

Chapter 8: Chapter 8: My Wife Comes First

"My wife got sick last night, she had a high fever and was unconscious, I couldn't leave her alone." Came Mo Shian's unprecedented reply.

Even his personal assistant, who was used to his bluntness, was shocked. He knew the reason his boss was late was because of his wife, but he didn't expect Mo Shian to actually tell the truth to Clinton. Telling such a big and respected billionaire that you postponed an important meeting because of your sick wife is not what many people would choose to do. But then again, Mo Shian was not a normal person. He was a special case. He was a genius who thought that everything else came second to his wife.

"Women are always troublesome. You should know to prioritize business if you want to succeed and stand at the top because you can't change your business as easily as you can change your women." Advised Mr. Clinton with a disapproving look as he shot his secretary a look.

"Sorry Mr. Clinton, but my wife comes first." Replied Mo Shian with a serious expression as he looked Mr. Clinton directly in the eyes. It showed how much that statement meant. Then he opened the folder in front of him.

"Let's get down to business." For the next two hours, both parties negotiated a partnership and, in the end, signed a contract that would enable Mo Corporation's entry into the European market and open the channels to becoming a global leader in various industries.

"Thank you Mr. Clinton for your trust, we will work hard to make the project a success." Said Mo Shian as he stood up to shake Mr. Clinton's hand.

"It's a pleasure working with you, Mr. Mo, the future belongs to the young people and I believe your ideas will bring global change, and I want to be a part of that change." Praised Mr. Clinton as both of them headed to the door.

"I won't be in City Y for long, I will be flying back to London tomorrow morning. Do you have time for a celebratory dinner tonight?" suggested Mr. Clinton.

"Tonight won't be possible. I need to be home early to check on my wife, but I will see you off at the airport tomorrow. We can have dinner next time you come around. It will be on me." Mo Shian declined the offer.

"Okay then, give my regards to your wife. She is a lucky woman to have a man like you so devoted to her." Said Mr. Clinton.

He was a smart businessman, he could tell that Mo Shian meant what he said. For him, his wife came first. So, if he wanted them to have a smooth business partnership, he had to show acceptance and respect to Mrs. Mo.

"Not at all. I am the lucky one for having her. I will say hi on your behalf." Said Mo Shian as he walked Mr. Clinton to the elevator and then headed to his office.

Mo Shian walked into his office and headed straight for his chair. It was a large office at the top floor of Mo Corporation with a minimalistic design. There was a large mahogany desk near the floor-to-ceiling French window that overlooked the entire City Y. Looking at the city through that window made one feel like a king watching over his subjects. Because of the rapid expansion of Mo Corporation since he took over as the CEO, they had to build a new office building and moved their headquarters a year ago. It was at the center of the city and was the tallest building in City Y with sixty-six floors. Mo Corporation is now known as a landmark.

Behind the desk was an office leather chair that Mo Shian used and in front of the desk were two chairs facing him for guests. On the left side, there was a large leather sofa and a coffee table in front of it. On the right side, there was a big bookshelf filled with books in various languages talking about business management and military strategies. One of his childhood friends, Li Pei, had once asked why he had books about the military when he had already left the army and was clearly heading a business empire. Mo Shian had replied that military tactics and strategies were very useful in business and could turn defeat into victory. Beside the bookshelf was a closed-door that led to a resting lounge that had served as a bedroom on many occasions before Mo Shian got married. It had a bedroom, a closet, a bathroom, and a small living room. Finally, at the corner of the wall beside the door leading out of the office was a large flat-screen TV mounted to the wall. It was sometimes used for presentations when department managers came to report their progress in his office.

Mo Shian got up from his chair and walked to stand before the French window. He started watching everything happening around the city but was soon lost in thought. He remembered the first time he had seen Weiwei. His grandpa had taken him along to visit his comrade, Xia Chen, Weiwei's grandpa. It was summer and he felt a little hot inside the mansion, so he had gone to the backyard to get some air. There he had seen a real angel. She was wearing a white dress and stood under a cherry blossom tree looking so beautiful. She had only been thirteen years old, but he could tell she would be a beauty once she was mature. And he had fallen in love with her and vowed in that backyard that he would marry her.

He had been eighteen years old and almost graduating from university, but he knew what he wanted and he definitely wanted the little angel for his wife. He had not gone to talk to her, instead, he went back inside the mansion and asked who she was. Grandpa Chen had said,

"That's my granddaughter, Xia Weiwei. She is my only blood-related descendant and the rightful heir to Xia Corporation." There was some sadness and pity in his tone, as if he felt sorry for her.

Mo Shian had later found out that Weiwei's mother had died in a car accident when she was eleven and her father had remarried a year later. His new wife had a daughter who was six months older than Weiwei. That explained Grandpa Chen's emphasis on the fact that Weiwei was his only blood-related granddaughter and the sole heir to the Xia Corporation.
