My Real Job is Spying on Konoha, but I'm Also its Hokage

Chapter 57: Chapter 58: Please, You're So Weak

Dusk fell. Haneul stopped his training, wiping the sweat from his forehead. After having lunch at Kushina's, he and Tsunade had returned home, and he'd spent the entire afternoon training. Haneul took a deep breath, went inside, and collapsed onto the sofa, exhausted.

Tsunade hadn't been there to supervise his training; she had gone to the casino instead. He was used to it by now, so he didn't mind.

Haneul closed his eyes and opened his Trait System.

[C-Rank Ninjutsu Trait: Lightning Release Chakra Activation]

Activation Condition: Achieve beginner level in Lightning Release Chakra Activation.

Current Progress: 20%.

Haneul noticed that the progress bar seemed to have hit a limit; it hadn't changed in a long time. While physical progress was indeed slow, for it to be completely static was clearly not normal.

Have I met the requirements? Haneul wondered. He decided he would try stimulating his body with Lightning Release chakra tomorrow. No, wait, the day after tomorrow. Tomorrow was Tsunade's birthday, August 2nd. This would be the first birthday he celebrated with her, so he couldn't be careless.

What should I get her? Haneul closed the Trait System, resting as he pondered the question.

Soon, he heard footsteps. Just as Haneul was about to speak, a hand landed on his head, stroking it gently.

"Have you been training all afternoon again?" Tsunade's voice was much softer than usual.

"Mhm," Haneul opened his eyes. "Did you win today, Master?"

"Why do you ask?" Tsunade retracted her hand and sat down beside him.

"If you had lost, you wouldn't be in such a good mood," Haneul said with a slight cough.

"You little brat!" Tsunade's anger flared. She pulled him into her embrace and her left fist slammed down on his head.

Thump.

The solid thud was proof of a good, solid head. The rich fragrance and the soft, heavy burden nearly knocked the wind out of him.

"Mas... Master, I... I was wrong!" Haneul struggled instinctively.

Tsunade's body trembled slightly as she let him go. She crossed her arms and asked with a cold smile, "You think a simple apology is enough?"

"We can go to the casino tomorrow," Haneul said after a pause. "You can play for as long as you want."

"Hmm?" A suspicious look crossed Tsunade's face. "What's gotten into you? Are you trying to slack off?"

"Skipping one day of training is no big deal," Haneul said with a grin. "As long as you're happy, Master."

Tsunade was taken aback, studying him, unsure if he was being sincere. Her eyes darted around. "I want to drink tomorrow, too."

"No problem," Haneul agreed without hesitation. "Drink as much as you want."

"Did something happen to you?" Tsunade reached out and pinched his cheek. They had been living together for several months now. Normally, Haneul was always nagging her about gambling and drinking, acting more like her mother than her student. And he was bold enough not to be afraid of her anger, which left her with few options.

"No," Haneul said. He found it strange. He was being so obvious, yet Tsunade hadn't guessed it was because of her birthday tomorrow? Thinking about it, it was actually possible. There weren't many people in Konoha who would celebrate her birthday.

"You little brat," Tsunade said, a small smile playing on her lips. "Since you're being so filial, I won't hold back. Come find me at eight tomorrow morning."

"Master, will you even be awake by then?" Haneul asked doubtfully.

"What did you say?" Tsunade raised her hand and rapped him on the head.

"Don't hit my head, it'll make me stupid," Haneul couldn't help but complain.

"Go make dinner!" Tsunade glared at him. She always seemed to lose their verbal spars.

"Yes, ma'am." Haneul got up and went to the kitchen.

After dinner, he didn't stay to train further, using the excuse that he was too tired from the afternoon's training and had no stamina left. Tsunade laughed so hard she almost fell over, all but saying, "Please, you're so weak."

Haneul left with a dark expression on his face.

He stopped at a commercial street on his way home. He still had no idea what to buy for Tsunade. Her only interests were gambling and drinking, but you couldn't give those as a birthday gift.

"Haneul!" A voice called out from a short distance away.

Haneul turned and saw Rin Nohara. She ran up to him, her face flushed like an apple.

"Our teacher said you took two days off," Rin said, taking a deep breath. "Is something wrong?"

"You're just in time," an idea struck Haneul. "I have something I need your help with."

"Eh?" Rin was slightly taken aback, a surprised look on her face. "Is there actually something you don't know?"

"There are many things I don't know," Haneul said with a smile. "Rin, do you have a moment?"

"Yes!" Rin's voice rose slightly in excitement. This is great! I can finally help Haneul-kun! Rin had bothered him many times about medical ninjutsu and had been looking for a chance to repay him.

"Tomorrow is my master's birthday," Haneul said, walking towards a gift shop. "Help me pick out a gift."

Oh, so that's what it is. For some reason, Rin felt a tinge of disappointment.

"Any suggestions?" Haneul asked, looking at the dazzling array of gifts.

"Is there anything Lady Tsunade is lacking?" Rin asked after a moment of thought.

"She's lacking money," Haneul answered instinctively.

Rin froze. Such a powerful medical ninja was short on money?

Haneul suddenly laughed. Come to think of it, giving her money directly might actually make Tsunade very happy.

"Just kidding," Haneul shook his head. "She doesn't really lack anything, which is why I don't know what to buy."

"How about that? Tea sets are very popular among adults," Rin said, looking around and pointing to an elegant, classic-looking tea set nearby.

"A tea set won't do, but a sake set might," Haneul's eyes lit up. "She likes to drink, not drink tea."

"Huh?" Rin asked hesitantly. "Aren't ninja forbidden from drinking?" In her mind, Tsunade was the perfect ninja, her idol. Haneul's words were threatening to crack that image.

"It's fine to drink after a mission is over," Haneul said, walking over and picking up a sake set next to the tea set. "I'm going to pay."

On his way, he spotted a beautiful bracelet and picked it up as well. He now had two gift boxes, one large and one small. Just as he was about to pay, he remembered something. He turned to look at Rin. She was standing there waiting, and when she noticed his gaze, she gave him a gentle smile.

Haneul went back and picked up another bracelet. He remembered that in the original story, Rin wore a red bracelet, but she didn't have one now.

"A thank-you gift for you," Haneul said, casually handing the gift box to Rin.

If Tsunade was only lacking money, he was lacking everything but money. The books he wrote, Anti-Demon Ninja and A Guide to Reviewing Interspecies Ninja Girls, were making him a fortune. He had no interest in money anymore.

"I can't accept this!" Rin quickly shook her head.

"Just take it," Haneul said, sidestepping her. "See you the day after tomorrow."

"Hane..." Rin opened her mouth but didn't know what to say. She looked down at the gift box in her hands, and after a few seconds of hesitation, she opened it. Looking at the exquisite red bracelet inside, her face flushed slightly.
