My Real Job is Spying on Konoha, but I'm Also its Hokage

Chapter 72: Chapter 74: The Future Mizukage, Mei Terumi

In the darkness of the night, a small figure suddenly appeared. She wore a standard gray flak jacket and a cat-faced mask that only revealed a pair of emerald-green eyes. Her reddish-brown hair floated in the wind. She was short, about 1.2 or 1.3 meters tall—a young girl.

"It's human blood. Looks like I'm going in the right direction," she said, looking around. She quickly found blood on a leaf and pinched it between her fingers.

"Mei, what's the situation?" Two figures landed behind her. They wore the same uniform and mask, but they were adults.

"Cod-senpai, please use my codename during the mission," Mei Terumi said in a serious tone. "My, my, what an un-cute junior," the man called Cod said, shaking his head with a smile. "Let's go," Mei said, glancing at him. "Let's capture him and get back quickly." "Don't worry, he won't get away," the other man, Scallop, said. "That's right, he's just a Chunin," Cod agreed, then suggested, "We've been chasing him for a day. Let's rest for the night and continue tomorrow." "This is the first mission Lord Genshi gave me. I absolutely cannot fail," Mei said, leaping into the night. "Let's go," Cod sighed, following her. Scallop followed close behind.

Haneul lay down beside Tsunade. In the darkness, he could hear the chirping of insects outside the tent and the sound of her breathing.

"First time out in the field. How does it feel?" Tsunade asked, turning her head to look at him. "It's pretty good," Haneul paused. "Especially you, Master. It's the first time I've seen you so serious." "What's that supposed to mean? Was I not serious before?" Tsunade couldn't help but rap him on the head. "You tell me," Haneul countered. "I was serious then, too," Tsunade said, her voice betraying a hint of guilt, though it was impossible to see in the darkness. "..." Haneul was speechless. He had thought his own skin was thick enough, but he had met his match.

"Tomorrow, we'll enter the Land of Water. You need to be extra careful," Tsunade changed the subject. "Do you know what the Hidden Mist Village is also called?" "What?" Haneul asked, playing along. "The Village of the Bloody Mist," Tsunade said grimly. "The Hidden Mist has always enforced a cruel and oppressive policy, especially when it comes to eradicating ninja with kekkei genkai."

In his past life, Haneul had thought the "Bloody Mist" era was a result of the Fourth Mizukage, Yagura Karatachi, being controlled by Obito, but that wasn't the case. The policy was already in place during the Third Mizukage's time. Obito had simply let it run rampant.

"Not long ago, a major incident occurred in the Hidden Mist," Tsunade continued. "A student named Zabuza Momochi, during his graduation, killed all his classmates."

Haneul's interest was piqued. Zabuza Momochi, in the original story, was one of the second generation of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. He became a rogue ninja after a failed assassination attempt on Yagura. While working for a wealthy merchant named Gato, he encountered Kakashi's Team 7 and died at their hands. He also had a young follower named Haku, who liked to dress as a girl and was skilled in Ice Release.

"In the Hidden Mist, this kind of slaughter happens often," Tsunade said, reaching out to pat his head. "You must be extremely cautious." "Yes, Master," Haneul nodded. "Let's get some sleep. We have to get up early tomorrow," Tsunade said, retracting her hand and closing her eyes. Soon, the sound of her steady breathing filled the tent.

The next day.

Warm sunlight filtered through the leaves, falling on the tent. Haneul opened his eyes. The first thing he saw was the silhouette that rose and fell with each breath. He realized that at some point in the night, he had snuggled up close to Tsunade.

"Master." Haneul unzipped his sleeping bag and sat up. "Was there any trouble last night?" Tsunade woke up quickly. Although she usually loved to sleep in, she was a competent ninja during missions. "The traps I set weren't triggered," Haneul said after checking outside the tent. "That's good," Tsunade yawned. She packed up her sleeping bag, stepped out of the tent, and stretched.

"Get out the map," Tsunade said casually while eating a rice ball. Haneul opened the map and held it in front of her.

"This is our rendezvous point," Tsunade said, pointing to a spot on the map. "Memorize the route. You will be the one to meet him." "What about you?" Haneul asked, taken aback. "I will be watching from behind," Tsunade said calmly. "I will only intervene if you encounter an enemy you cannot defeat." "I understand!" Haneul felt a surge of pressure. Although he had his cheat system and was strong, this would be his first time fighting a real enemy. "Here," Tsunade took out a Konoha forehead protector. "Wear this. It's how he'll know to trust you." "Mhm." Just as Haneul was about to take it, Tsunade moved behind him. "Be careful," she said, her expression complex as she tied the protector around his forehead. The last ninja she had done this for was Nawaki. "I will," Haneul nodded slightly.

After breakfast, they dismantled the tent and took a boat to the Land of Water. Once they disembarked, Tsunade said a quick word and vanished. Haneul took a deep breath and activated his 8x scope. He hadn't learned any sensory ninjutsu, so the scope's vision was invaluable now.

He got his bearings and headed toward the rendezvous point. Soon, he arrived at his destination: a small grove. The meeting point was the northernmost tree. The Konoha operative who had escaped from the Hidden Mist was supposed to be hiding in that tree.

Haneul didn't reveal himself immediately, instead observing from a distance with his scope. After a while, he frowned slightly. There was no one in the tree. Did something go wrong?

He decided not to move and continued to wait. After an unknown amount of time, he suddenly turned his head. He heard heavy footsteps. Through his scope, a young man came into view. He was covered in injuries and looked extremely haggard. Behind him followed a small figure.

"Anbu from the Hidden Mist?" Haneul subconsciously gripped the hilt of his samurai sword. The young man was the Konoha operative. If he died, the mission would be a failure. He had to save him.

But this Mist Anbu was a bit strange. So young to be in the Anbu? Undoubtedly a genius. So... who's protecting her?

Haneul released his sword and formed hand seals. Clone Technique! Another Haneul appeared beside him. He stared at the Anbu, and just as she was about to close in on the young man, he threw out four kunai. Without waiting to see the result, he immediately fled.

"Who's there?" Mei heard the whistling sound of the kunai. She quickly retreated, and the four kunai landed on the ground. "Watch out!" Cod's voice rang out. Mei composed herself and saw that one of the four kunai had an exploding tag attached to it.

BOOM! The tag exploded.

"Did it work?" Haneul glanced back with his scope, then shook his head. A wall of water had risen in front of Mei, blocking the explosion. But it wasn't completely ineffective. Cod had saved Mei. Scallop, following the trajectory of the kunai, found the clone Haneul had left behind. The clone had no combat ability, but now Haneul knew their numbers.
