Chapter 75: Chapter 77: Tsunade: The Fist of Love
Haneul opened Mei Terumi's wallet. The first thing he saw was a stack of cash. He counted it: 2,700 ryo. Besides the money, there were two hot spring discount coupons and a bottle of blue nail polish. Haneul pouted. The future Mizukage was a bit poor.
"Lady Tsunade," the young operative said, handing over the intelligence he had stolen from the Hidden Mist.
"Good work," Tsunade nodded slightly. She took it and sat down opposite Haneul. "A newly graduated ninja's first encounter with an enemy is usually awkward. You, on the other hand, were busy flirting with the little girl," she said, glancing at Mei's wallet.
"What flirting? Don't make things up," Haneul said with a straight face. "I was merely educating a defeated female ninja."
"That little girl is probably a genius from the Hidden Mist," Tsunade said with a light laugh. "The next time you meet, you might be the one getting educated."
"Definitely not," Haneul said, putting the wallet away.
"Oh?" Tsunade was surprised. "You're that confident?"
"Because I have a good teacher," Haneul said with a serious expression.
Tsunade was taken aback for a moment, then laughed. She reached out and flicked his forehead hard.
"Did I say something wrong?" Haneul felt wronged.
"No, you didn't," Tsunade said, her arms crossed. "But... don't get arrogant."
"Yes, Master," Haneul's eyelid twitched. For Tsunade, crossing her arms only increased the strain on her clothes. He was almost tempted to lend a hand.
"You handled that battle well," Tsunade said, her lips curling into a smile at his obedient demeanor.
"Is there a reward, then?" Haneul immediately pushed his luck.
"Your reward is treating me to barbecue," Tsunade rolled her eyes. This kid was getting bolder by the day.
"How is that a reward?" Haneul couldn't help but complain.
"What? You're not willing?" Tsunade asked, cracking her knuckles.
"I'm willing," Haneul said, immediately complying.
"Don't move," Tsunade said, suddenly remembering something. She placed her hand on his forehead. Haneul blinked, unsure of what she was doing. A stream of chakra flowed from her soft palm. "Looks like you're not injured," she said, retracting her hand.
"Thank you, Master," Haneul was taken aback for a moment.
"It's easy to sustain hidden injuries in battle. If not treated in time, it can affect your development," Tsunade said threateningly. "You might not grow any taller."
Not growing taller is one thing, not growing bigger is another. A smile appeared on Haneul's face. "With you here, Master, that definitely won't happen."
Tsunade looked at him, her heart skipping a beat. His handsome face, combined with that smile, was indeed hard to resist. "Smooth-talker," she huffed. "I wonder how many little girls you'll lead astray."
"What do you mean, lead astray?" Haneul said emphatically. "Master, that's slander."
Time passed as the two chatted. The ignored operative finally understood why Tsunade was the one to retrieve him. It was a training exercise for her student; he was just an afterthought. Realizing the truth, tears welled up in his eyes. That night, he was even more shocked by what he saw. He got a tent all to himself, then watched as Haneul and Tsunade went into another tent together.
The next afternoon.
The sun shone down on the gates of the Hidden Leaf Village. "Finally back!" the operative shouted excitedly upon arriving. He had been a spy in the Hidden Mist for six years. He thought he would have to wait another three years before he could come home.
"Let's go. We need to report the mission," Tsunade said without much emotion. She was already thinking about hitting the casino. After registering at the gate, the three of them entered the village. Haneul wondered how Kurenai and the others had been these past few days.
Hokage's Office.
Tsunade kicked the door open without ceremony. The operative's jaw dropped. Haneul, however, was used to it and remained unfazed. A thought crossed his mind: when Tsunade became Hokage, could he also kick the door in? But on second thought, he'd probably be beaten to death.
"Tsunade!" Hiruzen was startled and quickly took a puff from his pipe to calm his nerves.
"Mission's done. Give me the reward," Tsunade said, walking up to him. "And while you're at it, look up any recent geniuses from the Hidden Mist for me."
"Why are you looking into that?" Hiruzen asked, tossing her a bank book. A B-Rank mission totaled 160,000 ryo.
"Not enough. You need to add more," Tsunade said, shaking her head after a glance. "We ran into Juuzou Biwa."
"Juuzou Biwa? What happened?" Hiruzen's expression became grave. The Seven Ninja Swordsmen were the pride of the Hidden Mist, high in both status and skill. Tsunade briefly explained what had happened.
"I see," Hiruzen's tone relaxed. "The little girl you mentioned should be Mei Terumi." He opened a drawer and took out two files. Tsunade quickly scanned them—one was on Mei, the other on Zabuza. These two were the latest geniuses to emerge from the Hidden Mist, possessing considerable skill at a young age. Tsunade casually handed the files to Haneul.
"Alright, let's upgrade your mission to A-Rank," Hiruzen said after some thought. "I'll add another 300,000 ryo to your payment."
"Deal," Tsunade said, not pushing for more. Haneul returned the files to Hiruzen after reading them. He already knew most of the information, but this was more detailed than the original story.
"We'll be leaving you to your business," Tsunade said, taking the money and turning to leave. "Haneul, let's go."
Haneul, unlike her, said a proper goodbye to Hiruzen before hurrying after her.
"Thankfully, Haneul hasn't picked up his teacher's bad habits," Hiruzen said with relief. The operative stood by, pretending not to hear.
"Master!" Haneul stopped Tsunade and held out his hand. "Where's my share?"
"You're young. I'll keep it safe for you," Tsunade said with a sweet smile.
"No way," Haneul was unmoved. That's what my mom used to say. He wouldn't fall for it twice.
"Tsk, you little brat," Tsunade said, seeing that she couldn't trick him. She gave him 200,000 ryo. "Don't spend it recklessly."
"I should be the one saying that to you," Haneul said, putting the bank book away.
The next second, he shivered, feeling a murderous intent. He turned his head and saw Tsunade walking towards him with a dark expression, like the legendary giantess Hasshaku-sama, about to swallow him whole.
"Mas..." Haneul started to speak, but a large shadow enveloped him. Tsunade hugged him, then unleashed her "Fist of Love," playfully yet forcefully rubbing his head.
"Master," Haneul cried out, resigned to his fate. He couldn't escape; the snowy mountains were too heavy.
"Next time won't be so simple," Tsunade said, finally letting him go after she was satisfied.
"Yes, ma'am," Haneul said perfunctorily.
"You should go home and rest," Tsunade said after a moment's hesitation. She had wanted to take him to the casino, but considering he had been traveling for two days, she decided not to exploit him further.
"Goodbye, Master," Haneul waved at her.
The mission had taken almost a week. He actually missed Kurenai. He looked at the sky; it was about time for school to end. He thought for a moment and headed towards the Ninja Academy. The dismissal bell rang, and a flood of students poured out as if fleeing a disaster.
"Rin," Obito said with a smile. "Want to get some ramen?"
"I have to go home and read," Rin said, refusing after a moment's hesitation.
"Is that Haneul?" Kakashi's surprised voice came.
Rin instinctively looked up. In the distance, a familiar figure came into view. He's back? A happy smile appeared on her face. But someone beat her to it.
"Haneul!" Kurenai came flying out.
"Hmph!" Asuma Sarutobi pouted.
"I wonder what kind of mission Haneul went on," Kakashi said, a hint of envy in his eyes. He also wanted to go on missions, but Sakumo was too busy to take him. The only way was for him to graduate early. But because of his earlier declaration, he had to wait until Haneul graduated.
"It was probably just a simple D-Rank mission!" Obito said, annoyed.
"Haneul, when did you get back?" Kurenai asked, panting as she stopped in front of him.
"Just now," Haneul said, reaching out to pat her head and smooth down her wind-blown hair.
"Haneul," Rin and the others walked up. Kurenai realized what was happening and her face flushed.
"I heard from Kurenai that you went to the Land of Water for a mission," Kakashi said, looking him over. "Did you run into any Mist ninja?"
"I met a big shot," Haneul said with a smile. "One of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, Juuzou Biwa."
A collective gasp went through the group. The Seven Ninja Swordsmen were too famous; even they had heard of them.
"How is that possible?" Obito asked in disbelief. "You ran into him and came back alive?"
"Because my master is even stronger," Haneul said, spreading his hands. It wasn't a lie. With Tsunade's strength, dealing with Juuzou wouldn't have been too difficult. Even with a few more Mist Anbu, the result would have been the same. But he had been a liability, and for his safety, Tsunade hadn't taken the risk.
Obito's eyes welled up with envy. Damn it! So what if Tsunade is your teacher?! My future teacher will be a big shot too!
"As expected of Lady Tsunade," Rin said with a look of admiration.
"Come on, I'll treat you all to barbecue," Haneul said, taking out his bank book. "I made a lot of money on this trip."
"Then I'm definitely going to eat you into bankruptcy!" Asuma said without hesitation.
You'll meet a student named Choji Akimichi in the future, Haneul thought. Then you'll know what being eaten into bankruptcy really means.
Obito's face turned green. Rin, didn't you say you had to go home and read? Why are you going too?
