Chapter 165: Chapter 165: The White Snake Sage
"So, this is the White Snake Sage? Such vast chakra…" Nagato muttered, beads of cold sweat forming on his forehead as he gazed up at the massive white serpent seated on a throne above them.
Despite having already prepared himself mentally for the encounter, standing before the Sage now made him feel as if he was staring up at an insurmountable mountain.
The White Snake Sage was an enormous serpent with shimmering white scales, orange hair, and a green orb radiating dense natural energy hanging from its chest. A pipe dangled from its mouth. Though its body wasn't extraordinarily large, its presence carried an indescribable weight.
Its yellow eyes locked onto Nagato, and it spoke with a hint of nostalgia, "The Rinnegan... After so many years, I finally see the Rinnegan again…"
Nagato couldn't help but ask, "Sage, have you encountered another Rinnegan wielder before?"
"Of course," the Sage replied with a faint smile. "You know him as well. He was called the Sage of Six Paths by the world and was a friend of that old toad in Mount Myōboku."
Hearing this, Nagato was filled with awe. The entity before him was a true immortal who had lived for thousands of years, and its immense power was only fitting.
The White Snake Sage glanced casually at Uchiha Hikaru and remarked, "This Uchiha girl isn't bad—she carries a trace of Indra's spirit."
Hikaru met the Sage's gaze fearlessly and asked curiously, "Indra? Who's that?"
The Sage, unbothered by her attitude, explained kindly, "Indra was the eldest son of the Sage of Six Paths and your Uchiha clan's ancestor—a god of battle who never ceased fighting."
"Was he powerful?" Hikaru asked eagerly, her interest clearly piqued.
"Of course. He inherited the Sage of Six Paths' ocular powers and was incredibly strong. Little girl, you're still far from his level," the Sage said.
"What if I awaken the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and master senjutsu?" Hikaru countered, her tone unwavering.
Even if Indra was her ancestor, she wasn't one to back down.
"Perhaps then, you might rival his strength," the Sage replied with a chuckle.
"Good. I can't wait to see what this so-called senjutsu power feels like!" Hikaru exclaimed, her excitement barely contained.
"So eager for power, are you? As expected of Indra's descendant." The Sage seemed somewhat exasperated. Glancing at the two of them, it continued, "Orochimaru, must have explained the training methods of Ryūchi Cave to you, hasn't he?"
"Yes, Sage. We're aware," Nagato and Hikaru replied in unison.
"Good. Since you're both so impatient, I'll grant you the opportunity to learn Ryūchi Cave's senjutsu!"
As the Sage spoke, an overwhelming surge of natural energy erupted from its body.
In an instant, both Nagato and Hikaru felt an immense weight press down on their chests, as though a boulder were crushing them.
The next moment, the Sage vanished from the throne, reappearing behind them. They each felt a sharp pain in their necks, as if pierced by something fine and sharp.
Suddenly, an immensely powerful chakra surged into their bodies. Though its quantity wasn't vast, its quality was far beyond anything they had refined before.
Feeling the foreign senjutsu chakra within him, Nagato remarked, "So this is senjutsu chakra… It's far superior to ordinary chakra!"
The White Snake Sage watched with interest as the two struggled to adapt to the energy now coursing through them.
As a being that had lived for millennia, the Sage quickly discerned that Nagato's Rinnegan didn't belong to him. If it were truly his, his strength would be far beyond its current level.
The Sage knew full well that anyone who awakened the Rinnegan was destined for greatness—Nagato, however, was merely a vessel nurturing those eyes.
Still, it had no intention of revealing this. As an immortal, it occasionally needed some amusement to break the monotony of endless existence.
To the White Snake Sage, Nagato and Hikaru were nothing more than brief entertainment in its long life. It was curious to see how far Nagato, the vessel, could go and whether he might one day turn against the true owner of the Rinnegan.
It also knew that in this world, death wasn't always final. Techniques to bring the dead back to life weren't unheard of.
About ten minutes later, Nagato opened his tightly shut eyes. His appearance had changed—horns had sprouted from his head, his eyes were rimmed with markings, and his skin was adorned with fine scales, making him resemble a partially transformed serpent.
Feeling the surging power within him, Nagato clenched his fists and smiled faintly.
"So this is senjutsu chakra… Its quality is several times greater than ordinary chakra. Even the same jutsu gains tenfold power in Sage Mode!" he thought excitedly.
Orochimaru, watching from the sidelines, couldn't hide the envy in his eyes. He had once attempted to learn Ryūchi Cave's senjutsu himself but had ultimately failed due to his lack of talent.
Two minutes later, Hikaru also opened her eyes, revealing crimson Sharingan. Like Nagato, horns adorned her head, and white scales covered her skin.
Hikaru frowned slightly, dissatisfied with her altered appearance.
The White Snake Sage observed the pair and nodded in approval.
"Not bad. You both show excellent aptitude for senjutsu."
"Thank you for your guidance, Sage," Nagato said respectfully.
"No need for gratitude," the Sage replied nonchalantly. "You've only just begun. To use senjutsu effectively in battle, you'll need to continue honing your skills. The less visible your serpent traits, the more proficient your Sage Mode will be."
"We understand," Nagato said solemnly.
"Good," the Sage said with a nod. A scroll floated out of the shadows, landing before them.
"This is Ryūchi Cave's senjutsu manual. Train diligently, and as Ryūchi Cave's contract holders, do not disgrace its name!" the Sage commanded.
"Yes, Sage," Nagato and Hikaru replied in unison.
"If there's nothing else, you may leave now." With that, the Sage issued a clear dismissal.
For the Sage, observing the pair occasionally would suffice. Most matters in the shinobi world no longer interested it. Only events involving the Rinnegan or individuals of Indra's caliber could spark its curiosity.
As it watched the trio depart, the Sage narrowed its eyes and mused, "According to Orochimaru, this Nagato boy is collecting the Tailed Beasts. Is he planning to revive the Ten-Tails and become its Jinchūriki?"
"This world is about to become much livelier…" the Sage thought, closing its eyes slowly.
