Chapter 52: Alliance.
Seeing the situation, Izuna had no choice.
Izuna Uchiha finally offered up his scroll. If one of his teammates lost their life, their entire team would be disqualified. So, reluctantly, he gave it up.
Ensui Nara kept his Shadow Possession Jutsu active as one of his teammates took the scroll and frowned.
It was a Heaven Scroll.
Instead of returning it, the genin destroyed it right there in front of everyone.
Watching all this, I understood immediately—this team also had a Heaven Scroll. I gave a signal to Kakashi, and we both moved in a blur, flickering behind the two team leaders. Kunai pointed at their necks—Kakashi behind Nara, me behind Uchiha.
I spoke calmly, "Which gate are you guys from?"
The Nara answered quickly, "Gate number three."
The Uchiha, trying to turn around to see my face, hesitated. I pressed the kunai closer, letting a drop of blood fall.
He flinched, then said, "Gate number one."
I nodded to Kakashi, and we disappeared instantly.
Both the Uchiha and Nara team leaders looked at each other, shaken.
"Who was behind me?" the Uchiha asked.
The Nara replied, "Ren Senju."
Hearing my name, Izuna Uchiha gritted his teeth. He clearly hoped to defeat me in the final round.
Then, Izuna turned and said, "It was Kakashi Hatake behind you."
Suddenly, he remembered—they had destroyed his scroll. With his teammate now freed from the Shadow Possession Jutsu—thanks to Kakashi's threat distracting Ensui—Izuna turned his rage toward them. And the battle between the two teams erupted once again.
While the Ensui and Izuna teams clashed, my team had already vanished into the trees, heading toward the center tower.
I had a better idea of the setup now. The gates near us had mostly Heaven Scrolls. We were all positioned to clash—and maybe even form alliances. But the teams with Earth Scrolls must've been placed at the opposite side.
That meant we needed to find teams from Gate 21 and beyond.
But traveling all the way to the other end would waste too much time. I decided it was best to reach the tower first.
On the way, we encountered many animals and strange plants, but I restrained them using summoned roots. I didn't kill them—just held them back long enough for us to pass.
We also passed a team led by Ibiki Morino, two years older than us. Among his teammates, I recognized Aoba Yamashiro and Genma Shiranui.
I remembered they would all play important roles in Konoha's future.
Aoba would join the Twenty Platoons Intelligence Division. Ibiki would go on to lead the Torture and Interrogation Force. And Genma… Genma would serve in the Hokage Guard Platoon—a sign of his high-level skills and trust.
Genma had even been taught a basic version of the Flying Thunder God Technique by Minato, allowing him to teleport instantly to the Hokage's side.
Still, I didn't want any distractions. I summoned my roots again, binding them temporarily while we passed through.
Ibiki's team assumed it was a plant monster and did their best to escape. Eventually, they were freed when the roots receded on their own. They likely thought the monster had found new prey and moved on.
We reached the tower within thirty minutes—without even going full speed.
But we didn't enter.
Instead, we circled around, searching for other teams. Not long after, we spotted two squads traveling separately, but not too far apart.
I stopped and told Kakashi and Guy to stay alert while I sat down to focus.
I could feel something unusual—some kind of link between the two teams.
Kakashi and Guy asked what I sensed. I kept it vague.
"I sense a team nearby. Let's move."
I had my suspicions. We moved toward the right, where the connection originated.
Five hundred meters away, Kakashi sensed them too. But the enemy couldn't sense us yet. From here, I could clearly make out one of the leaders—Sanata Yamanaka.
A known sensor.
I guessed his range was about three hundred meters. Impressive, but not enough.
Seeing him confirmed my theory. Sanata was likely telepathically communicating with the other team, pretending they were separate groups to trap unsuspecting prey in a pincer attack.
Thanks to my sensitivity to natural energy, I could sense the faint chakra flow of his technique. I couldn't hear their telepathy, but I knew it was there.
I didn't mention the second team to Kakashi or Guy. Instead, I told them to approach Sanata's group.
Guy insisted on going too, so I let them both head out while I stayed behind, waiting for the second team. They were only about seven hundred meters away and closing in.
When Kakashi and Guy arrived, Sanata had already sensed them and prepared his team.
I spotted the second squad clearly now—led by Tsume Inuzuka. She was known for her enhanced senses, particularly her nose. She could amplify it with chakra, and her ninken and teammates followed behind her, closing in fast.
Back near Sanata's group, Kakashi immediately felt something was off. His own sensing ability caught the second group's movement at about four hundred meters.
Without hesitation, he told Guy to attack quickly. If they didn't finish this team now, the second one would catch them in the middle.
Kakashi dashed forward, appearing right beside Sanata.
The Yamanaka retreated immediately and ordered his team to cover for him while he began preparing his Mind Body Switch Jutsu.
But Guy was already moving.
He'd sensed the urgency in Kakashi's voice. Activating the Second Gate, he charged in, far too fast for genin to react.
He kicked one opponent straight out of formation, breaking two or three ribs with a single hit.
The remaining genin tried to run, panic setting in—but Guy was faster.
He caught up in an instant, driving a punch toward the fleeing enemy.
The boy tried to defend with both arms, unable to channel chakra in time to use ninjutsu.
But...
