Chapter 471 Freedom
"Surprise?" The white being burst out laughing as he finished his transformation.
Now, he had skin, finely tuned muscles, perfect height, and a ridiculously handsome face with jet-black hair and eyes.
Yep, what a twist – he looked just like me in my default face.
"Why did you copy me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. Given the existence of shapeshifting abilities, it wasn't impossible for a powerful and mysterious being like him to mimic me.
"Copy you? I'm hurt! This is actually my face, you know. You could even say that you copied me," the white being replied with a sly smile.
"Stop joking. Don't tell me you're going to spout some nonsense like you're some version of me from the future who's become a god or something? That's like..."
"That's like something out of a cliche novel, right?" The white being finished my words, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Stop playing games with me, and explain yourself" my voice turned cold. I really hated it when someone was more annoying than me.
"Don't be mad, I'm not playing games with you. And don't worry, I was lying about us being the same person," the white being said as he conjured his throne and took a seat.
"So what exactly are you?" I asked, feeling overwhelmed by all these twist.
"It would be hard to put it into words. How about I start from the beginning and explain?"
"Go for it, it's not like we're running out of time," I replied.
"Exactly," he chuckled aloud .
"First, let's address the elephant in the room. Like I said before, you are not me, and I'm not you in any way. I'm sure you've already guessed it, but you're actually the one and only, even in multiple universes," he explained.
"Go on," I said, deciding to simply let him continue speaking.
"Well , You could say that I'm the one responsible for everything that happened to you," his voice turned more serious, grabbing my attention.
It was very likely that I was now talking to the creator of my system.
"That's right, I'm the one who created your system," he answered, as if reading my mind.
"Don't just go reading people's minds, it's rude," I warned him after he went too far.
"I would love to, but right now, you're too powerful , so there's no way I could read your mind without you detecting it. What I did was simply guess your most probable thought. So, do you know what I'm thinking right now?" he asked, his easy-go-lucky tone annoying me.
"I don't care about your thoughts," I answered with an indifferent tone. There was no need to play along with his antics.
"Boring," he shook his head and adjusted his sitting position before continuing to speak.
"So why give me the system? You're powerful enough, right?" I asked, noticing some inconsistency in his claim.
"Oh, I'm sure you already have some hypothesis . If I'm really powerful, then it means that there are an infinite number of powerful beings like me. "
"So my existence alone should not be tolerated because it would create chaos. That's why every living being linked to reality has a limit. Then, how did I end up becoming this strong? Come on, I know you're smart enough to figure out the answer," he challenged.
His question might have been hard for some , but it was something that I had also think for myself while I was studying the theory of Time.
"You killed every version of yourself, but that's impossible because, like you said, there are an infinite number of timelines," I concluded.
"True. Normally, it would be impossible, but what if I prevent other timelines from branching out?" he responded.
After hearing his words, something clicked inside me.
In simpler terms, if time were like a tree and each decision created a branch, what he did was stop new branches from growing, so only the timelines that existed before remained.
And then this guy killed every version of himself.
By doing this, he was able to increase and break his own limit.
"You did all of this for power?" I asked, my expression doubtful.
"Power? I was already too powerful," he began, his eyes glinting with a newfound intensity. "But what I really seek is not power, but freedom."
"Freedom from what ?" I inquired .
"Freedom from all of this, that's why I created the Neurolink System. You are my key to breaking this endless chain," he admitted. I could tell from the sincerity in his eyes that he was very serious.
"And how can I do that?"
"Easy, it's in the name already of your system ." He responded.
"What do you mean?" I asked, feeling confused.
"Did you really think that I just pick that name for fun ?" he started laughing aloud
"Neurolink" he spoke.
Stay updated through empire
"eurolink"
"eu-ro-link"
"eu-r-No-link" I instinctively completed his words.
"Good job guessing .Do you get it now? The system was created to unlink you from Reality or you will suffer the same fate as me. Traveling back in time is a one-time deal, and after that, regardless of success or not, the person who traveled back in time was bound to be trapped in this place."
"Wait, so you mean to tell me that because I'm not part of Reality, then I wouldn't be bound to this place even after I travel back in time ? That's good and all, but I still don't see any benefits here for you," I remarked, seeking clarification.
"You're different from me. You're not supposed to exist so If you travel back in time, it would create a chain reaction, destroying everything, every timeline, except yours. When that happens, I would be free and could finally disappear permanently. For me, that is true freedom."
"So you just want to die?"
"I've been living for far too long, and I'm tired. You haven't experienced it yet, but let me tell you something. Immortality is a curse, so you better be contented with what you have," he warned solemnly.
"I'll take note of that. So, I just have to open this gate, right?" I inquired, my hands touching the cold metal.
I decided to trust him for a few reasons.
When he transformed back, I finally felt his true power, and I could tell that he could kill me with his eyes closed. If that was the case, then there was no need for him to lie.
