Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Kaido Wants to Recruit Whitebeard Jr.?
News travels fast across the sea.
Kaido had also seen the headline almost immediately.
Back in the day, he had his eyes on Weevil's strength too, even tried to recruit him once.
But the moment he saw Bakkin at Weevil's side, Kaido knew it wasn't going to work.
That woman, she used to be a member of the Rocks Pirates.
Greedy to the core.
Even with Kaido's status, there was no way he could've made use of Weevil under her influence.
"Let's go check it out," Kaido muttered as his eyes glinted sharply, "I heard that woman Bakkin is dead."
Back when she was alive, Kaido didn't dare consider stealing Weevil away, but now that Bakkin had been killed by White Night, things were different.
If his ship could house a younger version of Whitebeard, Kaido thought, then that strength could definitely serve him well in the future.
"Yes, sir," Quinn replied, startled as he looked at Kaido.
He hadn't expected the man to change his mind.
Still, it didn't really matter to him—he had no intention of going.
Kaido didn't need a ship to sail the seas.
With his Devil Fruit, he could soar through the skies unaided.
Even among countless Devil Fruit users, Kaido stood at the very top.
…
Meanwhile, two figures lay lazily on the deck.
Still those same two Marines.
But Kizaru was wide awake, casually flipping through a newspaper, his eyes scanning the headlines.
"How terrifying, Brother White Night(Noah)," he said with that strange tone of his, "Seems your reputation has already surpassed mine."
There was a hint of sourness in his voice.
Back when he made Vice Admiral, no one celebrated him this loudly.
And now, White Night had only been in the Marines for a few years, yet there were already calls for him to become an Admiral.
Not just a few whispers either, people were serious.
"The people's judgment is sharp," Noah chuckled softly, though in truth, he had no idea what was going on.
Still, if he had to act the part, he'd act it well.
"Oh, really? I heard at least twenty or thirty Vice Admirals already petitioned for you to be promoted to Admiral," Kizaru said as he stroked his chin, his tone shadowy.
"Seems like the people's eyes really are sharp, huh? I also think you'd make a fine Admiral."
If White Night really did get promoted, then Kizaru's life would finally get easier.
Sengoku's attention would shift away from him.
To Sengoku, Kizaru was already a lost cause.
But White Night was still a new generation worth salvaging.
"…Huh?"
"…???"
Noah pushed up his sleep mask and gave Kizaru a confused look.
What the hell was happening here?
He was out on a mission, how was he getting stabbed in the back out of nowhere?
Something felt seriously off with this game.
"Once we're back, your promotion to Admiral is guaranteed," Kizaru said casually, handing the newspaper over.
Let the kid figure it out himself.
He hadn't expected the Marines to collectively back Noah so fast.
Just a day ago, they'd still been discussing whether to delay the promotion with Sengoku.
But now?
The Marine's idea of 'waiting' was lightning fast.
"This Sengoku's doing?" Noah asked as his mouth twitched while staring at the front page.
It really felt like Sengoku loved making decisions on his own.
"I doubt the Fleet Admiral intended to force it," Kizaru muttered while rubbing his chin.
He probably knew Sengoku better than anyone else in the Marines.
There was a time he'd even studied Sengoku's mindset just to figure out how to slack off without getting caught.
Over time, he'd gotten a pretty good grasp of the old man's temperament and tactics.
"So it's not Sengoku?" Noah narrowed his eyes.
Because in the current Navy, there weren't many people with enough clout to pull this off.
Even Garp didn't match Sengoku's authority.
"Who knows? Oh, right, Zephyr is almost here," Kizaru added, changing the topic.
In just one day, Zephyr had already caught up.
The prison ship carrying him was about to rendezvous with them soon.
"Weevil's a real pain," Noah sighed.
If he'd known it would drag out this long, he would've just killed the guy back then.
Originally, they should've arrived at the Maya Kingdom by now.
But thanks to Weevil, their ship had to slow down.
They'd probably have to wait until tomorrow to reach the destination.
Good thing the Beasts Pirates hadn't attacked yet.
If they had, it really would've been a disaster.
"Back then, that guy caused us real pain," Kizaru said with a helpless expression.
If not for Weevil, they wouldn't have been forced into Admiral positions so early.
It was because of that crisis that the Marines had scrambled to stir up morale with bold promotions.
"If you wanted to make up for it, you should've captured him back then," Noah grumbled, rolling his eyes.
This whole group just didn't want to work.
"Now that's unfair," Kizaru retorted. "At that time, Weevil's strength was already close to young Whitebeard's. And we were still fresh back then. What if something went wrong?"
It felt like Noah didn't value his life at all.
"Yes, yes. You're all golden treasures," Noah replied, not even bothering to argue anymore.
The Marines had too many schemes and played too safe.
What's the point of being the number one organization on the sea if you're always scared?
"Vice Admiral Noah! The prison ship has arrived!" Hina reported as she walked over, sweat still clinging to her brow.
"Hina, don't be so tense," a familiar voice said as Zephyr emerged from behind her, smiling warmly. "I'm not some kind of villain."
"You weren't using standard Marine drills just now, were you?"
Zephyr had been watching Hina's training earlier.
Her movements were clean and precise.
Each strike felt like it crackled with thunder.
And more than that, her technique included a corresponding breathing method.
Such a style was rare across the sea.
If they could truly spread it throughout the Marines, it would be a serious buff.
"This was something Vice Admiral Noah taught me," Hina said as she glanced at Noah.
He didn't say anything, which she took as silent permission to answer.
To be honest, she'd felt a dramatic improvement recently.
At the very least, she felt she was twenty percent stronger than before.
