Chapter 79: Chapter 79: The Admirals’ Ambush
Before the banquet, Doflamingo had approached Jack with a request. He wanted Master to treat a particularly gifted young member of the Donquixote Family. Jack, naturally, had no objections.
The Donquixote Family had been nurturing a few potential high-ranking officers, and according to Doflamingo, this boy named Law showed extraordinary promise, with the potential to become one of their top members. Hearing this, Jack couldn't help but draw parallels to himself—after all, Kaido had taken an interest in him from a young age.
Doflamingo's words were clear: Master was to do whatever it took to cure the boy. However, it seemed this illness wasn't ordinary. If even Master—who had cured Rim's condition completely—couldn't fully treat Law's Amber Lead Syndrome, it spoke volumes about the disease's severity. Still, Jack figured the problem wasn't insurmountable. Suppressing the symptoms should suffice for now.
And, who knows? Perhaps by the time Law needed treatment again, they'd all be one big family. With Kaido's charisma and Doflamingo's limited leverage, it seemed inevitable that the Donquixote Family would eventually be absorbed into the Beasts Pirates. Jack just hoped Doflamingo would approach that transition wisely and avoid any unnecessary conflict.
Rim, who had been ecstatic after finally avenging his long-standing grudge, was in unusually high spirits during the banquet. Even when Master took liberties with him, Rim didn't put up his usual resistance. Jack, watching the scene unfold, turned his head away in silent resignation. And when he saw some of the crew drooling over Master, Jack simply lowered his gaze further.
The party lasted late into the night. Even Jack, with his considerable alcohol tolerance, felt a little lightheaded by the end. Rim, on the other hand, was utterly out of commission. Due to his past health issues, he rarely drank, and now his three-drink limit had him passed out. Master had already slung him over his shoulder and carried him off.
Jack, not having intervened in time, could only say a silent prayer for Rim. He hoped Master also had expertise in... certain other medical fields.
The next morning, Jack was back to his busy routine. By the time Doflamingo and his members came to meet him, they found Jack's room filled to the brim with ivory. Doflamingo was momentarily speechless before turning to his men.
"Make sure there's plenty of milk prepared for breakfast," he ordered.
Doflamingo had already arranged for the necessary supplies to be loaded onto the Mammoth. In addition, he'd included a generous amount of fine liquor, which sent Jack's crew into a frenzy. Some were eager to start another party right away.
After some polite conversation, Jack boarded the Mammoth, and the ship began to leave port. Jack, feeling invigorated, couldn't wait to return to Wano.
But they hadn't been sailing long when the lookout shouted in alarm.
"Jack-sama! Trouble ahead!"
"At twelve o'clock! A Marine fleet!"
"What?!"
Jack grabbed a telescope and peered ahead. Five or six Marine ships loomed in the distance, blocking their path. The lead ship looked ordinary at first glance, but Jack noticed something unusual—the sail bore a large "Tsuru" character.
"Tsuru?"
Before he could dwell on it further, more ships appeared to their left. Jack lowered the telescope and barked out, "Turn around! Back to Island!"
If these were just standard Marine ships, Jack wouldn't have cared. The Mammoth's firepower was more than enough to take them down. But these weren't ordinary ships. The lack of a standard Marine logo marked them as something else entirely—likely top-tier warships carrying formidable officers.
Jack wasn't one to underestimate an opponent. With this many ships appearing on their route at this time, something was clearly amiss. He suspected a traitor—but it had to be within the Donquixote Family, not his own crew. If there had been an infiltrator among his fishmen or other subordinates, he'd have been captured long ago.
The Marines showed no urgency in pursuing the Mammoth, maintaining a steady pace. Jack observed their movements carefully through his telescope. It wasn't just their flank; even the waters near Swallow Island were crawling with Marine ships.
They'd been surrounded.
Back at the port, Doflamingo had returned, fury etched across his face as he spotted the encroaching fleet. A vein pulsed angrily on his forehead.
"Damn it! Who is it? Who the hell betrayed us?"
He clenched his fists, his voice dripping with venom.
"We've been lying low here for days, and nothing happened. I thought we'd shaken them off. But it looks like that rat is among us!"
"I'll find them, and when I do—"
Before he could finish, the Mammoth returned to port, and Jack stormed off the ship, his voice booming.
"JOKER! Care to explain?!"
Doflamingo winced at the name. Joker? Yesterday it was all smiles and pats on the back. Now this?
Despite his irritation, Doflamingo forced a calm tone. "Relax, Jack. I'll root out the mole. But first, we need to deal with the Marines."
"Vice Admiral Tsuru is an old rival of mine, and she's not easy to handle. If she's mobilized this many ships, she must be confident of victory. The question is, what other monsters did she bring to capture us?"
"For now, we'll pull the ships back to avoid getting caught in the crossfire."
Jack nodded, and Rim quickly led a few men back to the ship. However, before they could fully retreat, a thunderous shout echoed from the sky.
"Ice Age!"
"What the hell?!"
In the blink of an eye, the rolling waves froze solid, transforming into a thick sheet of ice. Even the Mammoth was trapped. The sudden cold snap reached the beach, freezing the sand into rock-hard ice. Jack's group stepped back, watching as a figure emerged from the approaching Marines.
A tall man with disheveled hair and a green sleep mask strode toward them casually.
Jack squinted. "No way… Aokiji?"
"Fuffuffuffu! It really is a monster," Doflamingo muttered, though his composed exterior belied his growing unease.
Tsuru had clearly planned this operation for a long time, and her forces wouldn't be easy to overcome. Doflamingo wasn't sure if he and Jack alone could hold their ground.
As he weighed their options, Jack suddenly walked right up to Aokiji.
"So, you're Aokiji, huh? Hold on a sec!"
Everyone stared, confused, as Jack leapt back onto the Mammoth. Moments later, his voice boomed across the frozen harbor.
"Move the ship closer!"
