Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Future Path
Morning sunlight poured through the windows of the orphanage, casting a warm glow over the dining hall. The air buzzed with chatter as children ate their breakfast, their laughter filling the space.
Zen sat at his usual spot, quietly eating his food. Across from him, Kakuna nibbled on a few leaves, its red eyes gleaming as it focused on its meal.
As Zen finished the last bite, he stretched, letting out a small sigh. "Alright, Kakuna. Let's head to the park."
Just as he stood up, a familiar voice called out.
"Zen, can we talk for a moment?"
Zen turned to see Miss Clara, the orphanage caretaker, standing nearby with a kind yet serious expression.
He quickly nodding. "Sure."
He followed her to a quieter corner of the room, Kakuna hopping along beside him with soft taps against the wooden floor.
Miss Clara studied him for a moment before speaking. "Zen… have you thought about your future?"
Zen blinked. "My future?"
She nodded. "You're seven now. In three years, you'll have to leave the orphanage."
Zen stiffened but said nothing. He already knew this—every orphan did.
Miss Clara's voice softened. "You know how things work. Kids with families get their starter Pokémon from the Pokémon Alliance at ten, and they can start their journey without worrying about money or shelter. But you or other orphans… you don't have those advantages. When you turn ten, you'll need to find a way to support yourself."
Zen remained silent, staring at the floor.
Miss Clara gave him a small smile. "I've been hearing stories from the other kids. They say you're strong—beating other Trainers with just a Kakuna."
Zen scratched his cheek. "I just got lucky."
Miss Clara chuckled. "From what I've heard, it's more than luck."
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a neatly folded letter, offering it to him.
Zen took it, confused. "What's this?"
"A recommendation letter for a Ranger Apprentice position."
Zen's brows furrowed. "A Ranger…?"
Miss Clara nodded. "It's a stable job where you'd train Pokémon and work with experienced Rangers. It's not just battling, you will learn survival skills, helping people, and protecting Pokémon. You'd earn money while learning valuable skills."
Zen stared at the letter.
Miss Clara continued, her tone gentle but firm. "I know you love Pokémon battles. But battling alone won't guarantee a future. I don't want you to struggle when you leave here, Zen. You have talent. You should start preparing early."
Zen exhaled slowly. He could feel the sincerity in her words.
"…I'll think about it," he finally said.
Miss Clara smiled, reaching out to pat his shoulder. "That's all I ask."
Zen nodded, then turned toward the door. "I'll be going now."
"Take care, Zen."
With Kakuna hopping beside him, Zen stepped out into the morning light, heading toward Viridian Park.
He had a lot to think about.
The morning air was crisp as Zen walked toward Viridian Park, the recommendation letter from Miss Clara held loosely in his hand. His mind was a whirlwind of thoughts.
What am I going to do in the future?
He had never given it much thought before. All he knew was that he loved Pokémon battles. But could he really make a living from that?
Maybe, if he fight with Tron everyday but its not like he can meet rich trainer everyday.
As he strolled down the familiar path, a familiar old man came into view. The same one he had met months ago, the one who had given him the strange book.
A small smile formed on Zen's lips. "Hey, old man! Long time no see, you went missing over few month."
The old man, dressed in his usual worn-out coat and carrying a wooden cane, chuckled. "Hah! Unlike you kids, I've got plenty of work to do."
Zen tilted his head. "Work?"
That single word sent his thoughts back to Miss Clara's conversation. What kind of work will I have?
The old man noticed Zen's distracted expression. He narrowed his eyes slightly before speaking. "What's wrong, kid? You're thinking too much for someone your age."
Zen sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "It's… something that happened this morning."
The old man hummed. "Go on."
Zen hesitated for a second, then told him about Miss Clara's offer, about the Ranger Apprentice job,
The old man listened silently, nodding now and then. When Zen finished, he stroked his chin thoughtfully.
"Hmm… how about this?" The old man's eyes gleamed. "I'll sponsor you."
Zen froze.
"What?" He blinked at the old man in shock. "You're joking, right?"
The old man smirked. "Do I look like I'm joking?"
Zen's heart pounded. "You're serious? But why?"
The old man didn't answer immediately. Instead, he lifted his cane and pointed at Kakuna.
Zen followed the gesture, looking down at his mutated Kakuna, its purple shell, its red eyes.
And then, he understood.
"…Because of Kakuna?"
The old man gave a slow nod. "There's something special about you and that Pokémon of yours. I don't know what yet, but you two have potential and I can tell it's worth investing in."
Zen swallowed hard. This was huge.Someone was offering to sponsor him? That good new.
The old man chuckled at Zen's stunned face. "Take your time to think about it, kid. My offer stands until you're ready."
With that, he turned and began to walk away.
Zen, still recovering from the shock, suddenly shouted, "Wait! At least tell me your name!"
The old man paused, then glanced over his shoulder with a smirk.
"Next time, kid. Next time."
And just like that, he disappeared down the street, leaving Zen standing there, letter in one hand, a world of possibilities in the other.
