Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Entering the Forest
The morning sun peeked through the orphanage windows as Zen opened his eyes.
Today is the day.
Today, he turned eight years old.
It had been two years since he first found and befriended Weedle, who had since evolved into Kakuna. Time had flown by, and in those years, Zen had learned a lot about Pokémon battles.
And now, he had made up his mind.
He was leaving.
Rising from his bed, Zen quickly prepared his things.
His belongings:
10,000 Pokédollars that he got from pokemon battle, mostly he got from Tron. 10 Poké Balls that he bought from the Poké Mart. A few snacks for himself and Kakuna and few sets of clothes. Zen also dont forgot about recommendation letter for Ranger Apprentice spot.
Once everything was packed, he took one last look around his small room before stepping out.
Downstairs, Miss Clara was waiting for him at the front door.
She smiled warmly. "All set?"
Zen nodded. "Yeah. I've already decided—I'll become a Pokémon Ranger."
Miss Clara let out a small sigh, placing a gentle hand on his head. "I figured as much. You've always been stubborn… but that's also what makes you."
Zen smirked. "You make it sound like I'm a troublemaker."
Miss Clara chuckled. "You are a troublemaker."
Zen laughed, but his expression softened. "Thank you, Miss Clara. For everything."
She gave him a firm nod. "Take care of yourself out there. And don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it."
"I won't."
With that, Zen turned and walked away, heading toward Viridian Forest.
The entrance to Viridian Forest was marked by a Ranger Checkpoint, a small wooden outpost where Pokémon Rangers managed the safety of travelers and monitored wild Pokémon activity.
As Zen approached, a middle-aged man in a worn-out Ranger uniform stood near the gate, arms crossed. His short black hair was graying at the edges, and his sharp brown eyes studied Zen curiously.
"You're a bit young to be traveling alone, kid," the man said.
Zen stopped in front of him and held up the recommendation letter. "I'm here to be Ranger Apprentice."
The man raised an eyebrow before taking the letter. He unfolded it and read it carefully.
After a moment, he let out a small chuckle. "So you're the kid Miss Clara mentioned."
Zen tilted his head. "You know Miss Clara?"
The man nodded. "Of course. I've been working as a Ranger for over twenty years, I know everyone here. Name's Ray."
Zen's eyes widened slightly. Twenty years? That meant this guy was a veteran.
Ray handed the letter back to Zen and pulled a contract from his bag. "Alright, here's the deal."
Contract:
• Three-month internship
• Pass the test = Become a Ranger Apprentice
• Fail the test = No job
• Intern salary: 1,000 Pokédollars per month
• Ranger Apprentice salary: 3,000 Pokédollars per month
Zen took a moment to read it over. It was straightforward, survive for three months in Viridian Forest without outside help. If he could do that, he'd be officially recognized as a Ranger Apprentice.
Zen didn't hesitate. He grabbed a pen and signed the contract.
Ray smirked. "Good. Now, let's get going."
Ray led Zen into the dense and lush Viridian Forest. Towering trees stretched high into the sky, their thick canopies blocking out most of the sunlight. The air was damp, filled with the scent of moss and fresh leaves. The distant cries of wild Pokémon echoed through the trees.
After a short walk, they arrived at a small clearing.
"This is where I'll leave you," Ray said, tossing a flare to Zen.
Zen caught it. "What's this for?"
Ray crossed his arms. "If you ever feel like you can't handle it, light that flare. A Ranger will come to get you. But if you do that, you fail the test immediately."
Zen rolled the flare in his palm before shoving it into his bag. "I won't need to use it."
Ray chuckled. "We'll see."
Then, without another word, he turned and walked back toward the checkpoint, leaving Zen alone in the heart of Viridian Forest.
The test had begun.
