Pokemon Adventure: New Adventure

Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Test Begins

Deep inside Viridian Forest, Zen quickly realized one thing, most of the supplies he had brought were useless.

The Poké Balls, a few snacks, and his clothes were the only things of real value. Everything else? Dead weight.

The forest was dense, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and leaves. The towering trees blocked out most of the sunlight, casting eerie shadows across the undergrowth. Every rustling leaf, every distant chirp or growl, reminded him that he was not alone.

Zen let out a quiet sigh and reached for his Poké Ball.

"Come out, Kakuna."

With a bright flash of red light, Kakuna materialized on the ground.

Kakuna's red eyes glowed faintly, its expression as funny as ever. But Zen knew it was aware, alert.

He gave Kakuna a reassuring nod. "It's just us now. We'll have to be careful, Got it?"

Kakuna blinked once, its way of agreeing.

Zen let out a small smirk. "Good."

Just then, a rustling sound came from the bushes ahead.

Something was there.

Zen's muscles tensed as he slowly turned his gaze toward the movement.

A Rattata emerged from the bush, its twitching nose sniffing the air. Its beady eyes locked onto Zen, watching him cautiously.

Zen instinctively tightened his grip on Kakuna. He knew he could take the Rattata down, but what next?, they could have attract other wild pokemon here.

Slowly, Zen backed away, keeping Kakuna close to his chest.

Thankfully, the Rattata lost interest and scurried off into the bushes.

Zen let out a quiet breath of relief. Thank Arceus Kakuna eats leaves... If I had to hunt for food for it, this would be a nightmare.

With that close call over, Zen continued his search for shelter. He needed somewhere safe, maybe high up in a tree, away from ground-dwelling predators.

But then—

Something moved.

A long, slender body slithered through the tall grass, its deep purple scales blending seamlessly with the shadows.

Zen froze.

His heartbeat quickened as he recognized the shape—

Ekans.

The serpent Pokémon slowly slithered across the forest floor, its tongue flicking in and out, tasting the air.

Zen held his breath, keeping completely still. If he didn't move, maybe—

After a tense few seconds, the Ekans slid past him, seemingly unaware of his presence.

Zen let out a quiet sigh of relief.

That was too close...

But just as he relaxed—

Pain shot through his leg.

"Shit!" Zen yelped in pain, nearly stumbling.

He looked down—Ekans' tail had struck him!

"Kakuna, Harden!" Zen commanded instinctively.

In an instant, Kakuna's shell hardened, just as the Ekans lunged—its fangs aimed straight at them.

The snake Pokémon's attack slammed into Kakuna's reinforced body. Instead of piercing through, its fangs barely scraped the surface, causing Ekans to back away in surprise.

Zen gritted his teeth. "Cunning bastard... It noticed us but waited until we dropped our guard."

Ekans hissed, its golden eyes narrowing. It was not going to let them leave without a fight.

The snake coiled, preparing to strike again.

I can't let that happen.

Zen's mind raced. He couldn't afford a prolonged battle, not against a predator like Ekans.

"Kakuna, String Shot!"

Kakuna reacted instantly, firing a web of sticky silk toward the Ekans.

The purple snake jerked in surprise as the webbing wrapped tightly around its body, binding its movements.

Ekans struggled, hissing angrily as it tried to break free, but the more it thrashed, the more entangled it became.

Zen watched as it writhed, trying to snap the webbing with its fangs.

For a brief moment, he considered catching it.

Ekans was strong, fast, and dangerous. A great Pokémon to have.

Zen shook his head. I can't afford to raise a another Pokémon right now.

It would require meat, berries, and constant hunting. Right now, he was barely keeping himself together. Having another mouth to feed, especially one that relied on a predator's diet, was too risky.

Zen sighed. "Sorry, Ekans. Not today."

He grabbed Kakuna and ran, leaving the struggling Ekans behind.

After several minutes of running, Zen finally slowed down. He panted heavily, his heart still racing.

"That was... too close," he muttered.

He glanced down at Kakuna. "You good?"

Kakuna gave a small nod.

Zen smirked. "Of course you are."

He wiped the sweat off his forehead and looked around.

So this is the Vidirian forest...

A chill ran down his spine. This was nothing like battling kids in Viridian Park. This was real.

He thought back to last year when he had almost snuck into the forest to find Beedrill honey.

Back then, he had thought it was a good idea. But now?

If I had actually gone through with that plan... I probably wouldn't be here anymore.

The realization sent a shiver down his spine.

He shook his head, clearing the thoughts.

Right now, he had more important things to do, like finding shelter before nightfall.

Zen tightened his grip on Kakuna and continued moving, searching for a safe place to rest.

As day faded into night, the Viridian Forest transformed into a completely different world.

The rustling of leaves, the distant howls of unseen Pokémon, and the occasional cry of pokemon echoed through the dense canopy. The air grew colder, and an eerie silence settled in between each sound, making the shadows feel alive.

Zen climbed up a sturdy tree, carefully maneuvering between the thick branches.

The tree was massive, its trunk wide enough that he could comfortably sit against it.

Or maybe… I'm just small, Zen thought. At only eight years old, everything around him seemed much larger.

He finally settled into a comfortable position, pressing his back against the rough bark. From up here, he had a decent view of the darkening sky through the gaps in the leaves.

He let out a tired breath and glanced at his silent companion.

"Crazy first day, right, Kakuna?" Zen muttered.

Kakuna blinked once before giving a slow, deliberate nod.

Zen chuckled. "Yeah, thought so."

Reaching into his bag, he pulled out a small snack for himself, a simple protein bar. Then, with his other hand, he plucked a few fresh leaves from the tree, handing them to Kakuna.

The two ate in silence, chewing slowly, listening to the distant calls of the forest.

Zen wasn't just physically tired, his mind was exhausted too.

Three months of this… Zen thought, staring at the darkened horizon. Can I really do it?

Before he could dwell on it further—

Rustle.

A sound from below.

Zen froze, his heart pounding.

It wasn't just a normal rustle of leaves in the wind, something was moving.

Zen glanced at Kakuna. "Did you hear that?" he whispered.

Kakuna didn't blink, only giving another slow, silent nod.

Zen's grip tightened on his bag. He held his breath, listening carefully.

Then—

Silence.

The sound was gone.

The forest became unnaturally quiet.

Zen's instincts screamed at him, not to trust this silence.

He thought back to Ekans, how it had waited for him to drop his guard before striking.

Not this time.

Minutes passed. Five… ten…

Zen didn't move.

Neither did Kakuna.

Nothing came.

Finally, Zen exhaled, his muscles relaxing just a little.

"False alarm?" he muttered under his breath.

Still, he didn't let his guard down completely. Not until another five minutes passed with nothing happening.

Only then did Zen let himself breathe properly.

He pulled his bag closer, resting his head against the tree trunk.

"Alright…" he whispered. "Let's get some sleep."

Kakuna gave a final nod before settling against Zen's side.

Despite the lingering unease, exhaustion quickly took over.

Zen closed his eyes.
