Chapter 17: 017: Herding The Cattles
Although it was a tad heavy with Shanguang riding on his back, Ash thought it would be beneficial for her to actually understand how it felt like to hunt from the sky. Ash had a strong premonition that the young Ligress could fly someday when she evolved to the next rank.
Shanguang couldn't stop looking in every direction on top of Ash's back, amazed by the boundless mountain range before her.
"Master, is this what you see everyday?"
"More or less, yes. Though it could be boring sometimes."
"I would never be bored if I was able to see this view every day!"
"You will be able to fly someday, too. If only you will train diligently, of course."
"But, I have no wings. How could I fly without them?"
"Then, why don't you make them with your Qi Energy instead?"
She understood what he tried to teach her after a quick observation at how the Qi Energy flows around Ash's body. In order to generate lift upon his body, Ash forced the Qi Energy through under his wings, combined with his comprehension of aerodynamics, Ash could fly for days without needing any rest while carrying her on the back.
"Ohhhh! I can see it, Master! The way you used Qi Energy to your advantage."
"Excellent!"
"When will I be able to use Qi Energy as you do? What rank should I reach to be able to govern Qi Energy as I see fit!"
"Calm down. Don't be hasty. Focus on your foundation first. You are not even an Earth Rank just yet."
Shanguang sulked, burying her face into his feather. "I see."
According to the Vixen Goddess, Huxian, a land type Immortal Beast could defy natural laws and be able to fly without needing any wing when they reached Sky Rank Immortal Beast. As for the aerial type Immortal Beast, when they reached Sky Rank, they could soar even higher and reach the seventh layer of the sky.
Naturally, it would take at least a hundred years for a land type Immortal Beast to reach Sky Rank. However, with the Heavenly Beast Taming System, one could evolve into Sky Rank in less than a decade!
But of course, such cheating methods also come with huge risks. If the Tamed Beast's mentality and spirituality couldn't keep up with the radical change of their body, their Beast Core would crumble and turn into Demonic Beast instead.
That's why, Ash was determined to give Shanguang as much experience as he could provide and grew stronger alongside her.
After flying for two days, Ash and Shanguang could finally see the vast green meadows where all kinds of herbivores grazed on every square kilometer of the landmasses.
"Master, look there. It's the herd!" Shanguang pointed downward.
"Good observation, Xiao Shan. I'd give you an A for that."
Upon spotting hundreds if not thousands of Three Horned Bulls from above, Ash opted to descend at the forest's outskirts before he spooked the herd.
"Master, why would we stop here? Wouldn't it be better if we ambush them right away?" Shanguang asked.
"Why would you scare your food when you can herd them to be your livestocks for years to come? Those cattles might be inferior before us in the cognitive department, but they are not completely dumb animals."
Shanguang was even more awed by his wisdom. "Master, are you actually a sage in disguise?"
"Nope. Not even in one bit." Ash scanned his Storage Ring, searching for a herb that he can use to lure the herd. A moment later, he pulled out a blade of grass.
"Ahhh, this would do!"
When he had the blade of grass between his beaks, the System displayed the grass' detailed information.
[Legendary Rank Consumable Item]
[Heaven's Courtyard Green Weed]
[Planted by the Goddess of Harvest herself, Sheji, this grass is highly sought by cultivators for its healing ability. It is sweet, and a tad bitter when chewed.]
[Effect: Gain +100 Health Points upon consumption per each blade]
[Side Effects: This grass is highly addictive upon prolonged consumption. Very invasive species, one blade of this grass is enough to overtake an entire meadow in a single night and sucked up all the nutrients from the soil if planted on a world of mortals.]
"Another miraculous item!" Shanguang was astonished after reading the details. "Are we going to use it to herd the cattles?"
"Exactly." Ash nodded. But then, he was concerned about the side-effects. He was afraid that it would also lure unwanted guests upon this meadow. "Welp, no risk, no gain."
The always curious young Ligress sniffed the herb, she was attracted by its sweet smell.
"Mmh, it smells so good!. May I try it?!"
Ash replied almost immediately with glaring eyes. "Obviously, NO! As tempting as it gets, this grass is highly addictive. I would not even eat this thing unless it's absolutely necessary! Got it?"
"Y-yes, Master!" Shanguang was quivering
"Good. Now, let's find a suitable area to build our food farm."
"I will do it, Master! My body is small enough to hide among the grass."
"Do you know the criteria to establish our farm?"
"Of course, Master! Leave it to me!"
"Fine. Do it cautiously, I will supervise you from the tree line."
"En!"
At nightfall, Shanguang gave the signal that she found the most suitable soil for the Heaven's Courtyard Green Weed to grow. Not only that, she also understood the nature of the grass that would replace the native grass species overnight. Therefore, she dug a trench to encircle the designated area.
Although it was purely from her instinct and couldn't be proven as the right method to contain the invasiveness of the grass, Ash was amazed by how far she could learn from just a little information.
Afterward, Ash planted the weed and left the area with Shanguang on his back. In the next morning, the green and lustrous weed grew abundantly in the encirclement. Before long, the herd of Three Horned Cattles gradually came to check the fresh pastures.
Ash made a friendly gesture, picking up a blade of the grass and offered it toward the biggest and meanest looking bull amongst the herd.
"Come, come! This grass is delicious and crunchy. The best you'll ever taste in your life!"
The Alpha Bull couldn't fight the temptation and took a bite. And thus, the rest of the herd followed him, grazing without worry like there's no tomorrow.
On the other hand, Ash couldn't stop smiling. "Domestication, complete!"
"Next up, build an actual fence to deter any predators from poaching my livestocks!"
