Reborn in Type-Moon, My Sister is Aoko Aozaki

Chapter 27: Volume 1: Chapter 027 - The Three-Eyed Cat Demon

[You hear the commotion from outside the tent. Filled with worry, you, your sister Artoria, and Merlin immediately rush out to check on the situation.]

[Fortunately, you learn from the people around you that although your brother Kay is injured, the wounds are all superficial, and his life is not in danger.]

[The only slight inconvenience is that when your brother Kay speaks to you, his voice is somewhat muffled, as if his cheeks are swollen. You also learn from him what the "cat demon" mentioned by the messenger was all about.]

[According to your brother Kay, he was initially following Artoria's orders and leading a small team of soldiers to scout the route ahead. Unexpectedly, on their planned route, there was a monster's lair.]

[To prevent the monster in this lair from slowing down the main army's advance or even forcing them to change their route, your brother Kay decided to clear out the lair himself first.]

[What he didn't expect, however, was that the creature occupying the lair was not some massive, hideous demonic beast, but a three-eyed cat demon with pure white fur that seemed to be able to change its form at will.]

[Your brother Kay did not underestimate the enemy, but he never anticipated that the cat demon would defeat him with a single blow. Even more so, after that, it seemed to become curious about him and began to play with him like a ball of yarn, rolling him back and forth on the ground. This is what caused your brother Kay to be covered in superficial wounds upon his return.]

[After hearing your brother Kay's explanation, although it was a serious matter, Merlin couldn't help but laugh out loud, which earned him a kick from your brother. After hearing that your brother still had so much energy, you also breathe a small sigh of relief.]

[From his description, you understand that the strange three-eyed cat demon likely had the ability to finish your brother off, but for some reason, it still let him return, leaving you both grateful and confused.]

[However, Kay's luck is one thing, and reality is another.]

[If you are to follow the original plan and achieve a swift and decisive victory, your army must advance along the planned route.]

[To not delay the army's advance, and also considering that leaving the "three-eyed cat demon" alone might cause problems, after a brief discussion, you decide to go with Merlin to check out the monster lair your brother Kay spoke of.]

[Your sister Artoria initially intended to go herself, but after Merlin persuaded her that her duties "in the rear were more important," she finally agreed to your request.]

[And so, you and Merlin leave the military camp and head toward the so-called monster lair.]

"Merlin, do you know what this 'cat demon' Kay was talking about really is?"

Walking through the dimly lit forest, Aozaki Rin asked while vigilantly listening to his surroundings.

"Mhm... I have a rough idea, but logically speaking, that thing shouldn't be here. However, if it's still in its 'juvenile' state, then it's somewhat understandable."

Merlin stroked his chin thoughtfully, answering as if talking to himself.

Although with his eyes, he could peer into the situation at the monster's lair from here, if the truth was as he suspected, he would probably be discovered the moment he tried, which would then lead to certain misunderstandings.

"What do you mean?"

Unable to understand the meaning behind Merlin's words, Aozaki Rin blinked in confusion.

But the white-haired magus did not explain, merely smiling.

"We'll have to see the specifics before we know for sure. However, if my guess is correct, then Kay's defeat at the hands of that 'cat demon' was an inevitability. Because that thing cannot be defeated by conventional means."

"Then what should we do?"

"Er, let's just let nature take its course."

Merlin said vaguely. As they spoke, they had already arrived at their destination, because Aozaki Rin could now feel a strange aura coming from ahead.

It was sometimes strong, sometimes weak, sometimes there, sometimes not, as if it were constantly changing in response to the environment, or perhaps in reference to something else.

Sure enough, the moment their voices stopped, from the lair ahead, which was formed by naturally woven tree branches, a cat demon that was not particularly large, with ears like a rabbit, a fluffy, upturned tail, pure white fur, and a third eye in the center of its forehead, slowly padded out from the darkness.

But the cat demon did not attack. It just stood at a distance outside its lair, watching Aozaki Rin and Merlin, as if observing them.

"Merlin, is the cat demon right in front of us now? What does it look like?"

Although he sensed its presence, he did not feel any hostility. Aozaki Rin didn't draw Durandal from his waist and asked with some curiosity.

"Mhm, it's about 20 meters away from us. But it looks more like a dog than a cat. And it's only about three or four meters in size... As I thought, it's still in its 'juvenile' state... Hm? En?"

Merlin confirmed his thoughts as he looked at the three-eyed cat demon in the distance. Just as he was pondering what method to use to either drive it away or tame it, the boy who had been standing beside him began to walk forward on his own.

"Don't worry, it's not hostile towards us. It just seems a little curious. I'll see if I can persuade it not to bother the army that will be passing through here."

Aozaki Rin replied, turning his head to signal for Merlin not to worry, which caused Merlin's brow to twitch wildly.

Even though the true form of this "cat demon" was still in its "juvenile stage," it was the first time he had ever seen someone attempt to reach a consensus with this type of being through dialogue.

Is this really going to be okay...?

Slightly worried, Merlin sighed helplessly and silently prepared to cast a spell.

Unable to sense Merlin's anxiety, although Aozaki Rin knew from Merlin's description that the "cat demon" ahead was larger than him, in his own senses, he could only feel what seemed to be a much smaller existence standing before him.

What's more, he didn't feel any killing intent or hostility. The "cat demon" hadn't even issued a warning when he entered its territory, merely watching him. This made Aozaki Rin think that the creature must possess reason.

And so, he stepped forward, came before the three-eyed cat demon, and reached out his hand.

Relying on his senses, he placed his palm just below its forehead.

The soft, smooth touch of fur immediately registered in his palm.

The three-eyed cat demon seemed to be stunned by the boy's sudden action. After a long moment, its fur bristled slightly, and a low growl rumbled in its throat, as if in warning.

But the boy did not retreat. He just smiled and said softly.

"It's okay, we won't hurt you. Can we talk for a bit?"

The three-eyed cat demon stopped its low growl and stared at the boy for a while.

A moment later, it slowly opened its massive mouth, and then...

—it bit down on the boy's arm!
