Chapter 803: Consolation
After Damien teleported back to Earth, Lilith was also about to teleport back to her mansion. But she couldn't bring herself to leave Lucifer alone, especially after seeing him so angry and in so much pain.
"I hate to admit it but lately, he has been by my side every time I was in distress. It wouldn't hurt to check on him before returning home," Lilith thought to herself and then walked towards the door of the hall again. Find more chapters on My Virtual Library Empire
However, her feet wavered when she was about to step in. "What the hell am I going to say to him? Reminisce about the past that turned both of us into the cruelest versions of ourselves?"
Lilith was dragged out of her thoughts when she heard Lucifer's voice from inside the hall.
"Lilith, you can come in if you want to."
Now that Lucifer said so, Lilith took a deep breath in and then decided to talk to him even if it was for a short while.
When she went inside, she saw Lucifer sitting down on the steps of the platform where his throne was mounted on. He was sitting there unmoving, without even blinking his eyes. He looked so dejected that he looked like he had just lost his soul.
Lilith awkwardly held her arm and looked away from Lucifer. She didn't know what to say to him. She didn't know how to console him when she herself was haunted by the time that they had spent with their daughter.
When Lucifer didn't initiate the talk like usual even after a minute or so, Lilith slowly dragged herself towards him and then sat down by his side.
"Thinking about our daughter?" she asked him.
Lucifer heaved a deep breath as though he had been holding his breath all this while. And he gently nodded his head. He glared at the ceiling and asked Lilith, "Damien told you about Joyce?"
Lilith cleared her throat to soothe her nerves and replied, "Yes. He explained to me how they got to know that Joyce was our daughter's reincarnation."
A deafening silence fell in the room for a while.
After calming himself further, Lucifer glanced at Lilith and asked her, "What else did Damien tell you?"
"What else?" Lilith wasn't sure what Lucifer wanted to know. So, she said a random fact that Damien had said to her, "He gave me a message from Joyce. She said that she was sorry for leaving too early."
Lucifer narrowed his eyes and thought to himself, "I thought so. He didn't give full information to her, did he? He didn't say what Michael did to the children." The more he thought about that snake of a brother of his, he was getting angrier and angrier by the second.
Lilith also noticed his anger. So, she asked him, "Are you… probably angry at yourself for not being able to save our daughter?"
Lucifer sighed and turned his head to look at Lilith. He gave a nod and replied, "Of course, I am angry! I don't think I can ever forgive myself until the day I perish. I should have strictly forbidden Mackenzie from participating in the war… No, I should have locked her in the mansion because I knew that she would sneak to the fight."
Lilith's heart ached upon hearing that confession from him. Yes, she had also been enraged at Lucifer for not protecting their daughter. After the death of their daughter, the little interaction that they used to have with each other also became non-existent. She despised him from her core.
"Maybe I shouldn't have been so hard on him," she thought to herself. But there was no point in thinking about the past and regretting the decision that she made back then. "I guess… the least I can do is comfort him now."
With that thought in mind, Lilith politely said to Lucifer, "It's all in the past now, Lucifer. You should forgive yourself for what happened that day."
Lucifer immediately shook his head and said, "No, how can I forgive myself? I lost my daughter because I couldn't defeat Michael in time; I couldn't protect her even when I was right there."
"Yes, we both lost our child that day, Lucifer." Lilith took a shaky breath and then subtly smiled. And she said, "But look on the bright side. At least, she took birth again, and she is living a good life. We should be content with that now."
Lucifer closed his eyes and covered his face with his palms. He sighed deeply and said in a muffled tone, "I think you are right. Maybe we should be happy that her soul was allowed to go through the reincarnation cycle."
"Yes. He was kind enough to let Mackenzie's soul get reborn even when he hates us both from his core," Lilith said while indicating at God. "His kindness is very rare. So, yeah, let's be happy knowing that she is alive and well, even if that's not with us."
Lucifer's eyes twitched a little when Lilith said that their daughter was alive and well. He recalled what Damien had said to him and thought, "Yes, at least for now. Thanks to Damien who happened to teleport in between them just in time. If he hadn't accidentally come in between the attack, her second life would have ended as well… by the hands of the same murderer."
He then thought of raising this issue with Theodore and asking him to take care of Joyce's safety. He and Azriel were the only ones who could freely roam Earth, so, he wanted to ask for their help.
"What are you thinking?" Lilith asked again out of habit.
Lucifer looked at her and shook his head. "Nothing much. Just thinking about how our lives took a drastic turn after her death. I wonder what the future would have looked like if Mackenzie was still alive."
"Maybe we wouldn't have turned back to being the archenemies again. After all, she was the one who kept us from being bitter to each other," Lilith gave a subtle smile to Lucifer and then looked away.
Lucifer furrowed his brows and kept on looking at Lilith's face for a while. His heart ached and he felt disgusted at himself when he suddenly recalled the things he had done to her.
He looked away in shame and then apologized, "I know I have said this countless times, but it never seems to be enough. So, here it goes again. I'm really sorry for making you fall, Lilith. I should never have laid a finger on you."
Lilith sighed and clasped her hands together. She looked down at the floor. Her pupils dilated when she also recalled the past. And she mumbled without showing any signs of contempt, "You're still paying the price of your action, aren't you? At this point, I am the one who feels sorry for you."
"I know I am paying the price. But can you ever forgive me?" Lucifer looked into her eyes and asked.
Lilith gently shrugged her shoulders and replied in a really pain-laced voice, "I don't know Lucifer. I just don't know… But I forgive you for not coming back with our daughter that day. You were a good father to her."
