The Billionaire's Dilemma

Chapter 16: Unfinished Business

The next morning, Emily sat at her desk in the New York Sentinel office, Marcus Hale's business card resting beside her keyboard. The sleek black lettering seemed to taunt her. He had dangled the answers she wanted but trusting him felt like stepping into a trap.

She pulled up the notes from her investigation, cross-referencing the subsidiaries linked to Solstice Holdings. The deeper she dug, the murkier the trail became. Someone had gone to great lengths to cover their tracks.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice. "You look like you're planning world domination."

Emily glanced up to find Daniel hovering with two cups of coffee. She accepted one with a grateful smile. "If by 'world domination,' you mean unraveling a corporate conspiracy, then yeah pretty much."

Daniel leaned on the edge of her desk. "And? Any luck?"

"Sort of," she admitted. "Julian's business partner, Marcus Hale, reached out to me last night."

His expression darkened. "Hale? Emily, that guy is bad news."

"I know," she said, tapping her pen against her notebook. "But he's offering information. And if he's willing to turn on Julian, there's got to be something worth hiding."

Daniel sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Just be careful. People like Marcus don't help without an angle and you're already too close to Blackwood."

Before she could respond, her phone buzzed with a new message.

Julian Blackwood: My office. Noon. We need to talk.

Her breath caught. After their dinner, she hadn't expected to hear from him so soon. What did he want now?

"Let me guess," Daniel said dryly, catching her expression. "Mr. Billionaire?"

Emily gave a slight nod. "Looks like I'm paying him another visit."

Daniel shook his head. "Just… keep your guard up. Something tells me Julian Blackwood isn't the type to let people dig into his past without a fight."

Emily grabbed her notebook and rose to her feet, her resolve tightening. "Good thing I'm not afraid of a fight."

But as she made her way toward Blackwood Tower, one question lingered in her mind what did Julian know that was urgent enough to call her back?

And more importantly, was she ready to hear it?
