The Billionaire's Dilemma

Chapter 17: Beneath the Surface

Emily stepped into the sleek, marble-lined lobby of Blackwood Tower, her heels clicking softly against the polished floor. The receptionist recognized her immediately and, without a word, gestured toward the private elevator. It seemed Julian Blackwood was expecting her.

As the elevator ascended, she tried to steady the nervous energy humming beneath her skin. Julian's message had been cryptic, and after her encounter with Marcus, she wasn't sure what to expect.

When the doors slid open, Julian was already waiting. He leaned against his desk, his tailored navy suit fitting him perfectly, but there was something different an edge to his usually composed demeanor.

"You're punctual," he said, his voice smooth but tense.

"I'm a journalist," she replied, stepping inside. "It comes with the job."

Julian's lips curved faintly, but the warmth didn't reach his eyes. "Sit down, Emily."

She did, folding her hands neatly in her lap. "What's this about, Julian? Or did you just miss my company?"

A flicker of amusement crossed his face, but it faded quickly. He reached into a drawer and pulled out a thick envelope, sliding it across the desk toward her.

"Open it," he instructed.

Emily hesitated before lifting the flap. Inside were copies of financial records offshore accounts, shell corporations. Her heart thudded. These were the same documents she and Daniel had been chasing but far more detailed.

"Why are you showing me this?" she asked carefully.

"Because I know you won't stop digging until you find it," Julian said, his tone low. "I'd rather you hear the truth from me than from someone else especially Marcus."

Emily's pulse quickened. "So, you know he contacted me."

Julian's jaw tightened. "Of course, I know. Marcus has his own agenda, and if you trust him, you'll end up as nothing more than a pawn in his game."

Her fingers curled around the edge of the envelope. "And what's your agenda, Julian? Why would you give me evidence that could destroy you?"

For a moment, silence stretched between them. Then he leaned forward, his gaze locking with hers.

"Because I'm not the villain you think I am," he said quietly. "There are things about Blackwood Enterprises you don't understand yet. I'm willing to give you the truth, but it comes with a price."

Emily raised an eyebrow. "And what price is that?"

"Trust," he said simply. "If you're going to keep coming into my world, Emily, you need to decide whether you believe I'm the monster everyone says I am or if there's more beneath the surface."

His words hung heavy in the air. For the first time since she began this investigation, Emily felt something shift an invitation to see the man behind the empire.

But trusting Julian Blackwood might be the most dangerous move of all.
