The following morning, Emily woke to the sound of her phone buzzing relentlessly. When she checked it, her heart stopped her name was trending online, and not in a good way.

"Journalist Emily Taylor: Is She Covering for Billionaire Julian Blackwood?"

Her inbox was flooded with messages some from curious colleagues, others filled with accusations. Marcus had leaked personal details about her relationship with Julian, painting her as a compromised journalist who had gotten too close to her subject.

A cold knot twisted in her stomach. Marcus wasn't just attacking Julian he was coming after her career.

Julian's Fury

At Blackwood Enterprises, Julian slammed his phone onto his desk. "He's gone too far," he growled.

Claire, standing across from him, frowned. "Marcus knows Emily is your weak spot. This is personal."

Julian's expression hardened. "If he thinks dragging her into this will make me back off, he's wrong."

His phone buzzed again Emily. Without hesitation, he answered.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice gentler.

"I can handle the headlines," she said, though the strain was clear. "But if I don't stop Marcus, everything I've worked for will be gone."

"You won't lose your career," Julian promised. "I won't let him destroy you."

But deep down, both knew Marcus wasn't finished yet.

A Dangerous Offer

Later that day, Emily was reviewing new leads when her phone rang from an unknown number. Against her better judgment, she answered.

"Miss Taylor," Marcus's smooth voice filled the line. "I assume you've seen the headlines."

Emily's grip on the phone tightened. "What do you want?"

"A deal," he said. "Back off the investigation, and I'll make the scandal disappear. You keep your career, and Julian keeps his company."

Her stomach churned at his audacity. "I'm not afraid of you, Marcus."

"You should be," he warned. "Cross me, and I'll bury you both."

The call ended, but the threat hung heavy. Marcus wasn't bluffing and if they didn't strike first, everything they loved would be lost.

Strength in Unity

That night, Julian showed up at Emily's apartment. Without a word, she let him in, feeling the exhaustion in every step.

"We need to be smarter," he said, pacing the living room. "He's playing dirty we need evidence that takes him down for good."

Emily nodded. "I might have a lead. One of his former associates is willing to talk but it's risky."

"I don't care about the risk," Julian said, his voice raw with emotion. "I'm not losing you."

Emily's heart softened. "And I'm not letting him destroy what you've built."

In the quiet that followed, Julian pulled her into his arms. "Whatever happens next," he murmured, "we face it together."
