Chapter 44: The Board’s Ultimatum
The next morning, Julian sat at the head of the sleek, glass conference table in Blackwood Enterprises' boardroom. The tension was thick as the board members whispered among themselves. At the far end of the table sat Marcus, wearing a smug expression that made Julian's blood boil.
The chairman, Mr. Lancaster, cleared his throat. "Mr. Blackwood, the recent media scandal has damaged our reputation. Shareholders are worried. We need answers."
Julian's jaw tightened. "The accusations are baseless. Marcus is behind the leaks he's manipulating you to force me out."
Marcus leaned forward, feigning innocence. "I only want what's best for the company. Can you say the same, Julian?"
The room fell silent. Then Lancaster spoke again, his tone cold. "You have one week to restore public trust or the board will vote to remove you as CEO."
Julian's fingers curled into fists beneath the table. Marcus was winning but not for long.
Emily's Dangerous Pursuit
Across town, Emily met with a former Blackwood Enterprises insider a man named David Wu. He slid a USB drive across the café table.
"This has everything you need on Marcus's illegal dealings," he said, glancing around nervously. "But be careful he doesn't leave loose ends."
Emily's pulse quickened as she pocketed the drive. "Thank you, David. This could change everything."
But as she left the café, a black SUV idled across the street. Marcus's people watching her every move.
A Private Confession
That evening, Julian arrived at Emily's apartment, tension etched into his features. "The board's giving me a week," he said. "If we don't stop Marcus, I lose everything."
Emily hesitated, then pulled the USB drive from her pocket. "I may have found a way to expose him but it's risky."
His eyes softened as he took the drive from her hand. "You didn't have to do this."
"I did," she said quietly. "Because I believe in you."
For a moment, the weight of their struggles fell away as Julian leaned down, brushing his lips against hers. It wasn't just passion it was a promise.
"We'll take him down together," he vowed.
But neither of them realized how far Marcus was willing to go and what it would cost them both.
