Chapter 45: Marcus Strikes First
The next day, Julian arrived at Blackwood Enterprises only to find the lobby buzzing with tension. Employees whispered in hushed voices, stealing glances at him as he stepped into the elevator. Something was wrong he could feel it.
When he reached the executive floor, Claire was already waiting for him, her face pale.
"You need to see this," she said, handing him a tablet.
Julian's jaw clenched as he read the headline:
"Insider Whistleblower Reveals Fraud at Blackwood Enterprises"
Attached to the article were leaked financial documents carefully edited to make it appear as though Julian had been covering up fraudulent deals.
"This is Marcus," Julian growled. "He's making his move."
Claire nodded. "The board is calling for an emergency meeting. If we don't get ahead of this, they'll have all the excuse they need to force you out."
Julian's grip on the tablet tightened. He wasn't going down without a fight.
Emily's Race Against Time
Across town, Emily worked feverishly at her desk, analyzing the contents of the USB drive David Wu had given her. It was a maze of encrypted files and hidden transactions but one document stood out.
A shell company tied directly to Marcus used to funnel millions in illegal kickbacks.
"This is it," she whispered to herself. If she could verify it, it would be enough to expose Marcus and clear Julian's name.
But as she reached for her phone to call Julian, her editor, Diane, stormed into her office.
"You're off the Blackwood investigation," Diane snapped.
"What? Why?" Emily demanded.
"Marcus's legal team is threatening to sue us for defamation," Diane said. "If you keep digging, you'll lose your job and so will I."
Emily's stomach twisted. Marcus was tightening his grip and she was running out of time.
A Desperate Plan
That night, Julian and Emily met in his penthouse. The city lights glittered outside, but tension hung heavy between them.
"He's attacking us from every angle," Julian said, pacing the living room. "If we don't act now, I'll lose the company."
"I found a connection to a shell company," Emily said, handing him the printed documents. "If we can trace the money, we can prove he's the one behind the fraud."
Julian met her gaze, a flicker of hope rising. "You're risking everything for me."
Emily's voice softened. "I'm not letting Marcus destroy you or us."
In the quiet moment that followed, Julian closed the space between them, cupping her face gently. "We'll bring him down," he promised. "Together."
But Marcus wasn't finished yet and his next move would strike where they least expected.
