This Danzo Is Weird!

Chapter 54: 54. Danzo – "If They Refuse, Kill the Hostages"

"We… won?"

Sitting in his office, Hiruzen Sarutobi stared at the battle report from the southern front, his face filled with disbelief.

Although it was expected that Konoha would achieve victory once Mitokado Homura was no longer dragging them down, the speed of this turnaround was simply too fast!

Sharing his astonishment were Konoha's two advisors, Koharu Utatane and Mitokado Homura.

Especially the latter.

After all, while he was in charge, Konoha's forces were repeatedly beaten back by Kirigakure.

Yet, the moment Danzo took over, it had taken only a few days for Mist Shinobi to suffer a crushing defeat, with over a thousand enemy soldiers captured.

This was nothing short of a direct slap to his face.

Mitokado Homura's face turned an ugly shade of blue as he gritted his teeth and said:

"Hiruzen, I'll admit I made some miscalculations in my command… but does that mean Danzo was completely in the right? He seized control of my forces without your approval as Hokage!"

"If you continue to let him act freely, what happens to Konoha's chain of command? Are we saying now that anyone can become a commander simply by being the strongest?"

At this point, Homura no longer cared about anything else.

To protect his own reputation, he had to do everything in his power to discredit Danzo.

And truthfully, his argument wasn't entirely baseless.

In fact, he had touched on an issue that had already been weighing on Hiruzen's mind.

Noticing Hiruzen's subtle change in expression, Koharu Utatane took the opportunity to add:

"Although Danzo's results were impressive, Homura has a point. It's time we put some restrictions on his actions."

"I understand."

Hiruzen set down his smoking pipe, his voice calm and indifferent.

His expression was so unreadable that neither advisor could tell what he was really thinking.

"Danzo has just secured a major victory, and with multiple battlefronts still requiring his presence, now is not the time to punish him—it would risk shaking our troops' morale. We'll deal with this once the situation stabilizes.

For now, the priority is deciding our next steps."

Hiruzen shifted the conversation, picking up a sealed document and placing it on the desk before them.

"This was delivered to me through the Daimyō's office—a formal request from the Daimyō of the Land of Water for peace negotiations.

What do you two think?"

At his words, both advisors' eyes lit up.

Koharu Utatane immediately spoke up:

"If the Land of Water is willing to negotiate, then this is a golden opportunity! Konoha is currently engaged on multiple fronts and under immense pressure. I strongly suggest we proceed with peace talks as soon as possible!"

Mitokado Homura quickly followed up:

"Hiruzen, I agree with Koharu.

Additionally, Sunagakure has been making suspicious movements along our western border. If that old hag Chiyo catches on to Tsunade's current condition, she might launch an all-out attack immediately!"

"Now that the battle against Kirigakure is as good as won, we should wrap up negotiations quickly and redeploy Danzo to the Sand front."

Hiruzen took a deep puff from his pipe, falling into silence for a few moments before asking:

"What terms do you think we should propose in these negotiations?"

Both advisors furrowed their brows at the question.

"Hiruzen, given Konoha's current precarious situation, I think we shouldn't be too greedy. We should avoid making excessive demands and only request symbolic reparations to conclude the conflict swiftly."

Mitokado Homura nodded in agreement.

"That's right, Hiruzen.

Also, knowing Danzo's personality, he's bound to demand outrageous concessions from Kirigakure. That's why we need to pull him out of this situation as soon as possible."

Seeing that Hiruzen Sarutobi was still hesitant, Mitokado Homura could only remind him:

"Hiruzen, because of these past few years of war, both the villagers and the major ninja clans have grown increasingly resentful.

If you continue allowing Danzo to stir up conflict, Konoha will face irreversible disaster!"

Hiruzen frowned deeply at these words.

Because Homura wasn't wrong.

As the war dragged on, anti-war sentiment was spreading throughout Konoha.

If Danzo were allowed to continue unchecked, it wouldn't just be a problem for the village—even his own position as Hokage might become unstable.

And then, there was Sunagakure to worry about.

If Chiyo really led an attack with the Sand forces, Tsunade, in her current condition, wouldn't be able to hold them off.

At that point, even he, the Hokage, might have to step onto the battlefield himself…

And that was the last thing he wanted.

As Hokage, he didn't want to leave Konoha lightly.

If he did, it might open an opportunity for enemies to attack while he was away.

Right now, the most logical move was to do as his two advisors suggested—reassign Danzo to the Sand front.

After all, anyone could handle the peace negotiations with Kirigakure, right?

Thus, under the advisors' persuasion, Hiruzen finally compromised.

He summoned an Anbu ninja and issued an official transfer order for Danzo.

---

Before Hiruzen's transfer order even reached Danzo, Danzo's own letter had already arrived at the desk of Yagura Karatachi, the Mizukage.

The baby-faced Mizukage read the letter, his eyes burning with fury.

"That old bastard Danzo says that if we want peace,

Kirigakure must publicly declare war on Sunagakure and coordinate with Konoha to attack them!"

"Furthermore, Konoha will return the Six Ninja Swords and all captured prisoners only in batches, and only based on our performance against Suna."

"And we have only one day to decide!"

"If we exceed this deadline, Danzo will execute every single prisoner and restart the war between Konoha and Kirigakure!"

"This is a threat! A blatant threat!"

The young Mizukage was seething with rage, itching to charge straight into the Land of Fire and kill Danzo himself.

Elder Genji, the old advisor sitting beside him, simply shook his head, his voice calm yet admiring:

"It seems that Danzo has completely seen through our plans.

Using the Daimyō of the Land of Fire to pressure Konoha is no longer an option."

Terumi Mei, who was present, bit her thumbnail, her expression frustrated.

"Damn it, Danzo really is a cunning old fox!"

Their original strategy had been to use the Fire Daimyō's influence to pressure the Hokage.

Then, by coordinating attacks from other villages, they had hoped to force Konoha into a weaker negotiating position, securing the return of their prisoners while minimizing their own losses.

But Danzo had completely cut through their plans.

Instead of waiting for orders from the Hokage, he had rushed ahead and forced an immediate decision.

A "take it or leave it" deal—exceed the deadline, and the hostages die.

And Kirigakure could not afford to lose those hostages.

Neither the Six Ninja Swords nor the 1,000+ captured shinobi were assets they could easily sacrifice.

If those six legendary swords were lost, it would leave a permanent stain on Yagura's career as Mizukage.

"Since that's the case… we have no choice but to negotiate."

In the end, it was Elder Genji who made the decision.

"Besides, considering how much we've lost in this war, declaring war on Sunagakure might not be such a bad option after all."
