Chapter 120: Chapter 120: Gojo Satoru’s Request
Under the blue sky stretched a vast, endless ocean. The sunlight warmed the platinum-colored sandy beach, and behind the beach stood a lush grove of coconut trees.
Floating on the calm sea was a cute, red octopus head.
A few beach chairs were arranged in a row on the soft sand. On one of them lay a black-haired man, relaxing leisurely.
Beside him stood two bizarre-looking creatures.
"You're saying Mahito is dead...?"
A curse spirit with a head shaped like Mount Fuji and a single large eye taking up most of its face spoke in disbelief.
"Yeah, I didn't expect it either."
Lying on the beach chair, Geto Suguru spread his hands helplessly.
"Despite having such an annoying technique, he still ended up getting killed."
"Who did this!?"
The volcano-headed curse spirit, Jogo, was practically fuming. His head resembled a high-pressure furnace, spewing three streams of scorching steam from the vents on top and at the sides. His anger was plain and direct.
"Not sure. Probably someone from Jujutsu High? Seems like they brought in someone skilled with barrier techniques. No idea if that person had a way to counter Mahito."
Geto Suguru had a faint, intrigued smile on his face. He seemed deeply interested in this unknown figure from Jujutsu High.
"If they can't attack the soul directly, they can't kill Mahito," said Hanami, a special-grade curse spirit with a pale white body, black markings, and two curved branches growing from the eye sockets.
"Still, it might not have been the one who set up the barrier that killed Mahito,"
Geto Suguru suddenly added, propping his chin on one hand.
"What do you mean by that?"
Jogo narrowed his eyes as he asked.
"I saw remnants of Ryoumen Sukuna's cursed energy at the scene. There's a chance Mahito might have accidentally triggered Sukuna's wrath and been killed by him instead."
"What!? Did the vessel release Sukuna?"
"Don't know. There's too little information. Besides, I can't reveal myself to the people at Jujutsu High just yet, so I didn't investigate in person."
Geto Suguru sighed heavily. The disruption to his plans clearly frustrated him.
"With Mahito dead, my plans have been derailed. Sneaking into Jujutsu High to steal the six fingers and the nine curses is no longer feasible as originally intended."
"And now, even Ryoumen Sukuna's stance has become more uncertain…"
After a brief pause, he turned to Jogo.
"What about you? Do we stick to the plan of offering all the fingers to Sukuna, or do you have other ideas?"
Jogo sat down on another beach chair, his head slightly lowered. After a moment, he slapped his thighs with both hands and declared:
"Stick to the plan! No matter what, Sukuna, as a curse, could never side with humans."
"Whether or not I'm the one standing on the wasteland laughing in the next century doesn't matter. As long as curses replace humans, I'll be satisfied."
"Fine then."
Geto Suguru stood up from his beach chair.
"It seems the plan needs some adjustments. Without a lead, finding where Jujutsu High keeps their cursed objects inside Tengen's barrier will be tricky."
"We'll need more time…"
And if they could figure out the identity of this expert in barrier techniques, all the better.
A sharp glint flashed in his eyes.
Geto Suguru, what you started, let me finish it.
...
.....
As the last final exam ended, Sobu High entered its long-awaited summer vacation.
Vacation, shopping, the ocean, and the beach—summer had officially begun for the students.
A week after the exams, the results for the entire school were finally released.
Although Yukinoshita Yukino's overall scores had dropped slightly, she still held the top spot in her year.
Each exam's difficulty varied, so slight fluctuations in scores were normal. This, however, dashed the hopes of a certain overly passionate teacher who had been planning to use her grades as an excuse to check on the girl's recent condition.
If she asked directly, she'd probably just get brushed off with vague responses, much like before. It wouldn't lead to anything meaningful.
Hiratsuka Shizuka could only continue to worry in silence.
Even during vacation, Yukinoshita Yukino maintained her healthy routine. Early in the morning, she naturally woke up in bed.
Sitting up, she adjusted the loose, thin, white sleepwear she was wearing. The wide neckline on one side had slipped slightly, revealing her smooth, rosy shoulder. Her silky black hair spread out on the bed, with a few strands sticking up messily, adding a hint of cuteness to her groggy appearance.
She sat there with half-closed eyes, dazed for a few minutes before her mind cleared. Finally, Yukinoshita Yukino got out of bed, changed into comfortable loungewear, and left her room to freshen up.
"Huh?"
After washing up, she instinctively glanced toward the balcony. Today, however, the familiar figure on the rattan chair was nowhere to be seen.
Hayashizaki wasn't at his usual spot today. Was he sleeping in?
Driven by curiosity, Yukinoshita Yukino walked to the room that had originally been a guest room but now belonged to Hayashizaki.
Standing in front of the closed door, she hesitated for a moment before knocking softly.
Knock, knock.
"Hayashizaki? Are you still asleep?"
No response. The black-haired girl blinked and said quietly,
"I'm coming in, okay?"
Surprisingly, the door wasn't locked. She turned the doorknob gently and opened it.
As the apartment's owner, Yukino knew the layout of the room like the back of her hand. Everything was still in its original position. Hayashizaki hadn't rearranged the furniture after moving in, only adding a computer desk for his new setup.
When she pushed the door open, she immediately saw the black-haired young man sitting in an office chair, his eyes fixed on the computer screen. His hands moved rapidly over the keyboard, so fast they seemed to blur.
Curious, she glanced at the screen. It appeared to be some kind of game, and Hayashizaki was chatting with another player in the game's chat.
As for the content of the chat...
Yukinoshita quickly looked away. She felt like her eyes had been mildly polluted.
Who knew insults could be this creative...
No, the real takeaway was that Hayashizaki had such a fiery side. It must be the safety of being behind a screen that let him act so unrestrained.
"Good morning, Hayashizaki."
Yukino greeted him softly. Although he was wearing headphones, she knew his sharp senses would have picked up on her presence long ago.
"Did you stay up all night playing games?"
"Yeah, pretty much. There wasn't much else to do."
Hayashizaki seemed to have finished whatever battle he was engaged in. He took his hands off the keyboard.
Glancing at the time, he raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, it's that late already. Are you here to call me for breakfast?"
"No, breakfast isn't ready yet. I didn't see you at your usual spot, so I got curious and came to check."
Yukino brushed a strand of hair behind her ear and gave him a meaningful look.
"I thought you might've been sleeping in, but it turns out you were either up late drinking or pulling an all-nighter playing games. Could your lifestyle be any more 'healthy'?"
"What's the big deal? It's not like I can get sick or anything," Hayashizaki replied casually, leaning back in his chair without a care in the world.
"Hmph, suit yourself. You're just a temporary guest here, so your private life isn't my concern."
With a soft snort, Yukino turned to leave.
"But if you're planning to freeload meals, at least stick to regular mealtimes. If the schedule gets too chaotic, it'll be a hassle for me too!"
"Got it, got it, Chef Yukinoshita," Hayashizaki said dismissively as he followed her out of the room.
"By the way, about the task Gojo asked you to investigate—do you have any thoughts on it?" Yukino asked.
"Oh, that? I haven't even agreed to it yet."
Hayashizaki slumped into a chair at the dining table like a lazy freeloader, waiting for breakfast.
"Doing work for that guy just doesn't sit well with me."
He scratched his nose, recalling the scene from that time.
---
"Hey, Hayashizaki."
Outside Saito's restaurant, after everyone had eaten their fill and was about to part ways, Gojo Satoru suddenly called out to him as he was preparing to leave with Yukino and the Hikigaya siblings.
"Huh? You wanna die or something?"
When Gojo Satoru gave him a nickname, Hayashizaki immediately turned around with a fierce look on his face.
Ignoring the hidden threat in his calm gaze, Gojo Satoru smiled and said:
"I'd like to ask you to investigate something."
"Because of various reasons, I'm too busy to handle this myself. So I'd like you to look into information about a group formed by special-grade curses."
"Within Jujutsu High, unless I'm mistaken, there's likely a mole working with the cursed users. I'll handle the investigation on our side, but for the cursed users, I hope you can help."
"A mole..."
Yukinoshita Yukino, standing next to Hayashizaki, was taken aback.
"A jujutsu sorcerer collaborating with curses?"
"Not necessarily curses. That person might think they're only working with cursed users," Gojo Satoru explained.
"I don't think even they would be dumb enough to work directly with curses."
"I'll offer compensation, of course. As the head of the Gojo family, I can provide a very generous reward~"
"How about it? Interested?"
The white-haired man with the black blindfold smiled as he looked at Hayashizaki.
"You think I'll agree?"
Hayashizaki raised an eyebrow.
"No idea. That's why I'm asking you now," Gojo Satoru said with a shrug.
"What are those special-grade curses planning to do?" Yukinoshita Yukino asked from the side.
"No clue, but it's definitely nothing good," Gojo replied casually.
Hayashizaki glanced briefly at the black-haired girl, who looked worried, then gave his answer:
"I'll think about it. But don't get your hopes up. I'm not sure I'll agree."
With that, he turned and walked away with Yukinoshita Yukino.
"Tsundere?"
Gojo Satoru's teasing voice came from behind. This time, Hayashizaki didn't bother turning around and simply raised a middle finger at him.
"By the way, I'm curious about something," Gojo Satoru said, pretending not to notice the gesture as he called out to Hayashizaki's retreating back.
"Which side are you on?"
"Which side?" Hayashizaki chuckled.
"Neither. I'm only on my own side."
With that, the four of them turned a corner and disappeared from Gojo Satoru's sight.
"Sigh, if only he'd be more honest with himself," Gojo Satoru muttered, exasperated.
"He's not cute at all."
"Gojo-sensei! Hurry up! We're leaving!"
Ahead of him, the students had already walked some distance. Itadori Yuji was waving for him to catch up.
"Coming, coming!"
Gojo Satoru waved back and jogged over, throwing an arm around Itadori Yuji's shoulder.
"Sensei, we're planning to go hang out in Ginza. Want to come with us?"
"Not a bad idea. I'll grab some snacks too."
"Alright!"
##
Pushing Gojo Satoru's annoying grin out of his mind, Hayashizaki leaned on the table and turned to look at the black-haired girl in the kitchen, already wearing an apron.
"What's up? Are you worried about this?" he asked curiously.
"Special-grade curses with human intelligence gathering together, plus cursed users working with them, and a mole inside Jujutsu High... It all sounds like they're plotting something evil," Yukinoshita Yukino said, her voice as calm as ever, though there was a hint of concern in it.
"If they succeed, a lot of people might die, right?"
"You want to investigate this with me?" Hayashizaki asked, seeing through her intentions.
"We might run into multiple special-grade curses, you know."
"Mm…"
The black-haired girl nodded gently. She clearly understood the hidden meaning in Hayashizaki's words. A slight pang flickered through her soft heart, but she still spoke up.
"Even if I'm not strong enough, I want to do what I can."
"Is that… not okay?"
Yukinoshita Yukino stopped what she was doing and carefully looked up at Hayashizaki.
"There's nothing wrong with it. You won't get hurt as long as you stay by my side,"
Hayashizaki said with a shrug.
"I just think we won't find much, which is why I didn't rush to accept that white-haired guy's request. Investigating stuff isn't really my thing. I'm a sorcerer, not Sherlock Holmes. If we end up finding nothing, it'll just be awkward, won't it?"
"I absolutely refuse to do anything that might embarrass me in front of Gojo."
"Huh?"
Yukinoshita Yukino blinked in surprise.
"How can you know the result if you haven't even started yet?"
"Idiot. Our target is clearly a group made up of special-grade curses and curse users. Do you think enemies like that would be dumb enough to leave clues for us?"
"That idiot Mahito last time probably didn't even know someone like me existed. He got caught off guard and foolishly jumped out to expose himself."
"After that fight, the enemy already knows about me. There's no way they'd make the same mistake again."
Hearing Hayashizaki's explanation, the black-haired girl let out a soft "oh." She realized she hadn't thought it through as much as he had.
Or maybe she had taken things for granted. Not everything was as easy for Hayashizaki as she had assumed.
"But we can't just do nothing, right?"
Yukinoshita Yukino asked.
"Well, we can just wander around and see how it goes. Maybe we'll get lucky."
