Chapter 12: Intruder
"What do you mean?" Edythe was unsure.
She didn't think Mark knew her true identity, and she also believed it was still too early to reveal everything.
She was afraid Mark might fear her. Now that she knew he was her bond, she planned to wait until he trusted her more before sharing the truth.
"I know what you are. I saw you that night—your eyes," Mark said, stepping closer.
Edythe was caught off guard by those words.
She wondered if their eyes meeting that night hadn't been just a coincidence. She hadn't even realized Mark had approached.
Mark raised his hand and gently placed it on Edythe's soft, cold cheeks—only then did she look at him, startled, and pull away.
Realizing this, she felt Mark might have misunderstood and now disliked her.
"I'm sorry… You caught me off guard. It scared me," Edythe tried to explain.
"It's fine, I was too abrupt… Your skin's very cold. Does it sparkle in sunlight too?" Mark asked.
"What are you talking about? Why would I sparkle? No normal human glows in the sun," Edythe said.
Mark simply laughed—it seemed she wasn't yet ready to confess, so he shifted the topic.
"Let's go, or we'll be late."
After saying that, Mark took Edythe's hand and pulled gently.
This time, Edythe didn't protest and let him take her hand. So warm and big, she thought.
...
It was the end of the school day and students were heading out. Mark, who had parted ways with Edythe in the afternoon classes, was walking toward his car when someone stopped him.
"Bella, how can I help you?" Mark asked.
Bella was alone. Looks like Edward ran off again, Mark thought.
"No, it's nothing. It's just… Edward—his eyes changed color," Bella said, watching Mark's reaction.
Mark didn't react. He looked at Bella for a moment, unsure how to respond.
To him, this was meddling in other people's affairs—and if something went wrong between them because of his interference, he'd regret it.
After thinking for a moment, he played dumb: "I've never noticed. What were they like?"
Bella looked disappointed. It seemed she wouldn't get the answers she was looking for and left after saying:
"Forget it. Maybe I'm just seeing things."
Mark just watched silently as Bella walked away, then headed toward his car.
Looking at his old rust bucket, Mark thought it was time to upgrade his baby.
He got in and headed home, not even noticing that the Cullens were watching him.
"Are you sure, Edythe?" Alice asked.
"Yes. He seems to know what we are," Edythe confirmed.
"Maybe he's encountered vampires before?" Emmett wondered.
"We don't know. For now, let's keep an eye on him. After all, he's Edythe's partner, so soon he'll be one of us," Rosalie said.
Edward remained silent. While the others talked, he kept watching Bella from a distance.
That's when everything changed—a van lost control and sped toward Bella, who stood frozen in place.
Without thinking, Edward dashed forward to save her. A loud crash followed.
All the students froze. After a moment, everyone ran to see what had happened.
When they arrived, they found Bella sitting on the ground, dazed, with part of the van crumpled.
Medical personnel were called, and those involved were taken to the hospital.
Mark, who was on his way home, changed course and went to his dad's workplace. He thought it'd be nice to invite his old man out for dinner.
While waiting at the hospital, he noticed Bella and others arrive. He learned there had been a car accident involving Bella.
Mark was surprised—he hadn't expected that event to happen today. He sighed with relief, glad that his arrival hadn't disrupted key future events.
While waiting for his father, Mark spotted Edward and Edythe and decided to approach them to chat.
But something happened—looking in a certain direction, Mark sensed someone had appeared out of nowhere.
It was as if they had teleported. Mark hadn't expected anyone in this world to possess that kind of ability.
He kept the newcomer under his perception, just in case they were a hostile vampire targeting humans.
But what Mark hadn't expected was that the visitor was an intruder from another world.
He chose to ignore the figure for now and continued toward Edward and Edythe.
