Chapter 19: secret
Mark arrived early at school today. After parking his car in an open spot, he got out and waited silently.
Since it was so early, only a few students were around—most hadn't arrived yet.
When Mark called Edythe the night before, she had asked him to come early today because she had something important to tell him.
Mark tried to persuade her to say it over the phone, but Edythe insisted—it could only be shared in person.
Mark had a few guesses—was Edythe finally ready to reveal she was a vampire?
On the first day of school, Mark had hinted that he already knew her true identity, but since Edythe played dumb, he never brought it up again and continued treating her like he didn't know anything.
While he waited, a red Ferrari pulled into the school parking lot and stopped next to Mark's car.
He didn't even need to look—he already knew it was Su Chen. Mark glanced briefly, then looked away.
Su Chen, having just arrived in his multimillion-dollar car, noticed Mark standing by his vehicle.
He drove into the spot beside him and focused on Mark's face. Deep down, he just wanted to show off.
But when he realized Mark barely spared him a glance, Su Chen felt frustrated.
After parking, Su Chen took a deep breath to hide his emotions and stepped out.
"Mark, you got here early," Su Chen said with a smile.
Mark looked at him and sensed the underlying hostility, but still replied politely:
"I woke up early and was bored at home, so I figured I'd come here first."
Noticing that Mark didn't seem interested in talking, Su Chen grew irritated but hid it well and pretended not to notice.
"Yesterday, I saw you and Edythe in the movie theater. Are you two dating?" Su Chen asked.
"Yesterday was our first date. We haven't made it official yet," Mark replied, glancing at him.
For some reason, Su Chen felt like he'd stepped on a landmine—his blood ran cold.
Looking into Mark's eyes, he found nothing unusual. Mark appeared to be looking at him normally.
So why did it feel like he might lose his life in the next moment?
"Well, I hope things work out between you two. You make a great couple. I need to go talk to my girlfriend," Su Chen said, rushing off.
Mark watched him leave, remaining silent. He didn't understand what Su Chen was playing at.
Always hostile, yet pretending to be friendly. Just now, when he mentioned Edythe, Mark had sensed something off in his tone.
Better not cross the line… or else, Mark muttered.
...
Some time later, the Cullens arrived—Bella came at the same time.
Edward and Edythe were whispering something to each other, their eyes shifting toward their respective partners.
No way—Edward's planning to reveal his secret to Bella today too? Mark wondered.
Bella headed off in one direction, glancing at Edward, who followed behind.
Edythe walked in another direction, glancing at Mark—who understood and followed her.
Both siblings plan to reveal their secrets the same way? They really are siblings, Mark thought.
Edythe led the way toward the forest, and Mark followed silently.
No one knew how long they walked into the woods, but when Edythe felt they'd gone far enough, she stopped.
Mark, watching closely, stopped as well. Though he'd anticipated this, the atmosphere made his heart race with excitement.
Edythe turned and looked at Mark from a short distance. They stared into each other's eyes without saying a word.
Just as Mark was about to take the first step, Edythe spoke:
"What I'm about to tell you is a very important secret. I wonder… are you brave enough to hear it?" Her smile carried a hint of playfulness.
Mark raised his eyebrows and joked: "As long as you're the one telling it, I'll listen. There's nothing in this world I'm afraid of."
"Really? Even if this secret could take your life at any moment?" she said—and vanished.
In less than a second, Edythe disappeared from sight, leaving only her voice behind.
Anyone else might have been terrified—but to Mark, it was amusing.
For some reason, he felt like teasing her. He put on a surprised expression and looked around, pretending to search for the source of her voice.
