Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Temporal Paradox
Marcus remained unaware of what was happening outside. His focus was entirely on shaping Excalibur.
As the final piece of the armor formed, Marcus broke through the energy cocoon and emerged.
"This sharp sword intent truly befits Excalibur."
He felt a powerful aura surrounding his body, as if he could slice through anything around him at will.
Looking up, Marcus noticed everything around him had become phantasmal, flickering in and out of reality.
The people, the scattered Sentinel wreckage, and the various items piled near the temple had vanished. It was as if he'd experienced a dream.
No longer surrounded by energy, Marcus set aside his desire to test the new armor. He needed to understand what was happening.
Observing the changes, his mind worked at incredible speed.
"It seems Charles and his team have succeeded with their plan, but why am I unaffected?"
According to Charles's plan to change the future, once Logan completed his mission, all history from 1973 to the present would be rewritten.
Yet here he stood, still beside the temple. Why?
As he pondered this question, Marcus noticed everything around him stretching outward, surrounding him like a kaleidoscope of reality.
"Kill! Tear them down!!!"
"Ha, Bobby, you can stand on your own now..."
"..."
Various voices echoed in his ears as time and space flowed backward, compressing toward him from all directions.
Marcus himself began to change. His body shook involuntarily, and soon a phantom separated from him.
Shortly after separating, the phantom solidified into an exact duplicate of Marcus.
They stared at each other, raising their hands in perfect synchronization, as if watching a mirror image.
Suddenly, their bodies shook again, and each split into another identical phantom.
The closer the reversed time-space pressed toward Marcus, the faster the splitting occurred. Soon, countless versions of Marcus filled this pocket of reality, each moving in perfect unison, like copied images.
"What's happening to me? Or what's happening to this space-time?"
Marcus understood his condition was related to the distorted space-time, but couldn't comprehend why he was multiplying this way.
With so many duplicates surrounding him, what did it mean?
Soon, Marcus noticed something strange. The continuously compressed space-time halted, and the surroundings began filling with void energy.
This energy emanated from the countless duplicates, saturating the reversed space-time and transforming it into void. The previously flowing continuum became stagnant.
Within this void, Marcus realized all his duplicates had changed. They no longer mirrored his movements but acted independently.
As Marcus tried to understand, the void began collapsing. One by one, the duplicates fell to the ground, transforming into void energy that converged toward him.
"Aaahhh!!!!"
Marcus's eyes widened, releasing intense light as void energy streamed from them.
Countless waves of void energy poured into his body, wrenching screams from his throat. The energy felt substantial, almost solid, and inexplicable memories flooded his mind.
These memories were unfamiliar—events he had never experienced, yet they seemed like things he had lived through in other realities.
Marcus couldn't process it all. More and more duplicates transformed into void energy and merged with him. Physical and mental agony compounded exponentially, his screams echoing throughout the distorted space-time.
After countless versions merged, Marcus finally lost consciousness, his body suspended in the air, surrounded by void energy.
"OULL!"
Countless voices spoke simultaneously from Marcus's mouth.
This unified voice resonated through the imprisoned space-time, causing the void energy surrounding his body to gradually dissipate.
Eventually, Marcus regained consciousness. Though initially disoriented, he quickly understood what had happened.
Those phantoms that split from his body were all himself—versions from different timelines, created after he took different actions throughout reality.
They appeared because of this reversing pocket of space-time.
He had been away from this world for sixty years. Normally, his return wouldn't cause problems, but the sudden timeline alteration couldn't rewrite Marcus's existence.
This space-time had tried to reject him, to eliminate his influence—but the strong fluctuations created countless versions of Marcus, manifesting infinite possibilities.
Under the pull of void energy, all possibilities merged, making Marcus a singular existence across reality.
"Heh, eternalism?"
Marcus smiled, shaking his head. He never expected space-time would make the theory of eternalism manifest in reality. His raw power hadn't increased significantly, but he had become a unique existence in eternity.
According to eternalism, Marcus was like Schrödinger's cat—simultaneously dead and alive.
Unlike the unfortunate cat, however, he wouldn't resolve to one state when observed. No matter when he was observed, he would always be alive.
Marcus had obtained a unique form of immortality—the ability to be reborn at the moment of death.
"What an unexpected but pleasant surprise."
Though immortality was an unexpected gift, he still needed to determine how to escape this reversed space-time.
Gently touching the space-time turbulence, the distorted flow presented an image: a little girl about to be struck by an arrow.
"This child fears death..."
As he spoke, the space-time turbulence suddenly snapped back to normal, and Marcus stumbled, falling into its flow.
...
In a forest, a little girl nestled in her mother's arms, crying out to Erik who was being arrested by police.
"Don't leave me... I won't let them take you away..."
Birds gathered from all directions, swarming toward the police.
"Nina, stop! Nina!"
The mother hugged Nina tightly, trying to calm her daughter and disperse the attacking birds.
A policeman, under assault from the birds, drew his bow defensively and loosed an arrow by accident.
Just as the arrow was about to strike Nina and her mother, a massive figure flashed between them. The mother and daughter vanished instantly, leaving only the arrow embedded in the soil.
"Nina! Magda!"
Erik shouted desperately, needing to know if his wife and daughter were safe. To his horror, there was no answer—they had been taken by the mysterious figure.
